A direct attack on Sullust was out of the question. Even if the planet could be taken, it could not be held, as the logistics of setting up defenses would be impossible. The most direct approach was via Corulag, a planet that the Emperor had also place high on the list of target priorities. Before the Decimation the system had contained vast automated factories capable of churning out TIE Fighters; with the levels of attrition the Empire's fighter squadrons had been taking, fleet command was very keen to capture them.

With the new capital ships finally emerging from Strategic Space Command, the Empire began building up a strike fleet at ASVS. It was then that the cultists decided to engage in what appeared to be a random act of suicide.

Image

Perhaps they believed that the attack on Vortex by their brethern had drawn off the Empire's forces, although the pitiful attack group that arrived over ASVS would not have been much of a challenge even for the static defences. As it is they arrived in system to face a force identical in composition to that which had taken the Maw, in addition to the defence station, local garrison and planetary batteries.

Image

In the CIC of the Star Fist, Commodore Sheppard was laughing so hard he actually had trouble giving the attack order. He eventually managed it, The defending fleet unleashed a solid wall of turbolaser fire in the general direction of the intruders, and in less than a minute they had all been replaced by blossoming fireballs.

Image

Who can say what the rationale behind this attack was, if indeed there was one. Let this be a reminder that our enemies are the antithesis of reason itself.

On the opposite side of the Empire, Task Force Reprisal was considerably further along in its preparations for departure. Now that the local defences had been strengthened and fresh Acclamators had been produced for their garrisons, the components of Task Force Exterminator had could be reassembled. Captain Knight's Guardian-class gunboats were en-route to ASVS, to provide anti-starfighter escorts desperately needed by the SSC capital ships. In their place the Carrack-class gunships INS Kali and INS Durga joined the fleet, captained by Commander Beowulf and Commander Phantasee respectively. The task force had also been reinforced by the Victory-class INS Lord, fresh from the refit yards with Captain Relvenous commanding.

The northern campaign faced a similar problem to the push towards Sullust, although not as severely. The most likely staging areas for the cultist attack could be taken directly, but defence would be simplified if Mygeeto was taken first. Commodore Rath pushed hard for this course of action; he knew that there would be machine patrols in the area, and he was keen to kick some shiny metal ass.

Preparations were complete and the fleet jumped to Mygeeto and deployed fighters normally.

Image

“Admiral, inbound fighters, looks like two... make that three squadrons. They appear to be droids, sir.”

“I'm sure Commander Starkiller will have a field day. Continue a slow approach to the planet.”

“Yes sir... hmm... I'm reading energy signatures in the outer solar system. I think something is powering up out there. Something big.”

Image

The droid fighters launched a bizarre secondary weapon, pods that burst into clouds of tiny droids that tried to damage any nearby spacecraft. The device was wholly impractical as a weapon of war, but it came as a nasty surprise to the Imperial pilots.

“Stay out of those clouds!” Commander Starkiller ordered “they're barely mobile, but they're rip you apart if you let them latch on.”

The fleet continued to advance. Ahead, space twisted and distorted for a split second before an enormous shape appeared in a flash. Spindly escort destroyers micro-jumped in around it as the converted mega-freighter turned ponderously to face the intruders. A dull, grinding mechanical voice filled every subspace and EM band;

“That's one of the machine base ships.” Commodore Rath was staring at the bloated machine ship with flat hatred. “They're tough nuts to crack, we haven't been able to take one down since the first battle over Belkadan.”

“It's a bloody berserker! Darkevilme, have your group take out that command ship! If it gets to hot, break off, we will finish the job. Commander Beowulf, keep those escorts tied up.”

Commodore Darkevilme ordered her ships forward, splitting into two groups that moved to surround the enemy ship. Their fire had little effect though; the ex-freighter's shields had been massively and comprehensively reinforced. Only Lieutenant Commander Redleader's bomber wings seemed able to do any damage, and even they could do little more than whittle away at the vast array of weapons dotted across the hull. He could not fathom why any intelligence, machine or not, would spend so much time and resources trying to turn freighters into dreadnoughts. Though as he jinked desperately to avoid the hail of laser fire, he could not deny that the end result was effective.

Image

“Admiral, our shields are down to 50%, but we have softened up the enemy for you.” Darkevilme purred into the comm. “Falling back now, you may pounce for the kill.”

“Acknowledged Commodore, we are...”

The newcomer proved to be equipped with some kind of large-scale energy field weapon, which it promptly unleashed on the INS Thunder. The assault frigate instantly lost its shields and targeting arrays. The situation was compounded by the long-range turbolaser fire that buffeted the ship, a lucky hit blowing a gaping hole in the hull amidships.

“Full evasive!” Captain Ryan was struggling to save his command. “Damage control teams, focus on the primary heat exchangers. We must maintain speed.”

“Admiral, this is Beowulf, we can't hold those escorts. We've just lost...” A explosion drowned out his words for a few seconds “lost primary fire control. The Durga is in even worse shape. We have to withdraw.”

“Permission granted, Captain. Strike and Space Superiority groups are to fall back at flank speed, we will provide covering fire.”

“Admiral, those escorts are going after my ships! Permission to assist sir!” Darkevilme howled.

“Negative! You'll just lose your entire squadron. Full retreat, that's an order.”

Of the two Victory class destroyers, the INS Loyalist was closer to the Thunder. Captain Force brought her in close, firing continuously on a destroyer that the Thunder had already weakened. The target went down in flames under his guns, but the rest of the destroyers kept up their pursuit, and now the more distant AI dreadnought was targeting his ship. The Loyalist's shields soon began to fail under the withering turbolaser assault.

Image

Missiles streaked out of the first enemy dreadnought, detonating around the Lightning and releasing clouds of buzz droids. The tiny machines latched onto the hull and began attacking weapons and sensor blisters with their cutting torches. The spindly escorts continued to concentrate fire on the Lightning, destroying her engines and breaching the reactor shielding. The ship and her crew died in a ball of plasma, and the enemy ships switched their fire to the INS Studibaker.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.

“No! Curse you!” Darkevilme howled at the sight of one of her prized assault frigates being casually blown away by the machines. This time, there would be no last minute rescue, and it looked like the Studibaker and the Loyalist would be sharing the Lightning's fate in short order.

Captain Vanas didn't like that script. “Take us in! Maintain speed and cut across the enemy's line of fire. We only need to buy them thirty seconds and they'll be out of range.” The INS 'Resistance Is Character Forming' roared forward.

Image

It was a good plan. The Venator had full shields and no damage, and under normal circumstances she could survive one pass through the broadsides from even two enemy dreadnoughts without taking serious damage. Unfortunately the second dreadnought had managed to recharge its superweapon. With her shields ripped away, the 'Resistance' had no chance. The burning hulk continued on a ballistic trajectory to crash directly into the enemy dreadnought, smashing through into its hangar spaces. Secondary explosions rippled along the port 'arm' of the ship.

“All ships, hyper out immediately!” Admiral Samuel was determined to salvage what he could. “This battle is lost.”

Captain Relvenous responded immediately “Sir, please, the Lightning and the Loyalist have lost FTL! We need time to pick up their crews!”

“Captain, we can't stand against two dreadnoughts, we'll lose the whole fleet. Withdraw, that's an order.”

“No.” Commodore Rath's tone was flat, final.

“I beg your pardon, Commodore?”

“They invade our space, and we fall back. They exterminate entire worlds, and we run away. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!

All movement had ceased in the CIC, though the klaxons kept ringing and the ship continued to termble under incoming fire. The crew were Rath's crew, they had spent years running from the machines, they would follow him to the end. Rath's eyes seemed to bore into Samuel, who could only stand in stunned silence.

It was perhaps three seconds, but it seemed like an hour. Finally Commodore Rath turned back to his crew. “Relvenous, Darkevilme, get the crews off. We will take that battleship. The Resistance wounded it badly. Their sacrifice must not be in vain.”

“Commodore, you are disobeying a direct order!”

“Captain Bluewolf, are you with me?”

“Sir... yes, sir! That thing has to die!”

The Necromancer and the Revisionist closed to point-blank range, unloading everything they had. Commander Redleader's battered bomber squadrons released the last of their torpedoes, aiming for the breaches in the dreadnought's hull.

“Now Commodore, if you have satisfied your vendetta, perhaps we could out of here before the second one finishes the job?”

The INS Necromancer's shields were gone and the enemy shots were blasting smoking craters in her outer armour belt. The Revisionist had already pulled away

“FTL status?”

“Marginal sir. We might make one jump, if we're lucky.”

“With all possible haste, Lieutenant Kuroneko.”

Image

There was a tense silence. The ship was bucking harder now, the incoming shots smashing her superstructure and slamming into the inner belt.

“Sir, the navicomp isn't working right, these co-ordinates can't be...”

“Go to manual. Best guess. You can do it.”

With a tortured groan, the INS Necromancer flung herself into hyperspace.

WAIT. STOP. DESIST. IF YOU LEAVE NOW, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE GREAT SPECIAL OFFERS, SUCH AS...

The remaining droid ships floated alone in the void, surrounded by empty wrecks and a slowly expanding debris cloud.

Image

Imperial losses : The INS Thunder and INS Resistance Is Character Forming were destroyed outright. The INS Loyalist and INS Lightning took heavy damage, lost FTL and had to be abandoned and scuttled. The INS Necromancer and the INS Studibaker took heavy damage and will be in drydock for weeks, if not months. The remaining ships took light damage.

Enemy losses : One dreadnought (a mega-freighter converted to second rate battleship standards), one destroyer, some attrition to their fighter squadrons.

The Emperor traveled to HPCA personally to investigate possible irregularities. He found nothing substantive that would implicate Moff Sea Skimmer, but he did find a web of corrupt administrators and black market trafficers, who have been diverting Imperial supplies to parties unknown. The Emperor personally executed the perpetrators on grounds of treason, but the network is believed to extend to several other Imperial worlds.

Corruption amongst our worlds? Clearly caused by the abuse of power by moderators who have no cause to fear the distant hand of the sysadmin. More administrators will be required. Perhaps even one that is wearing life-support armor due to his myriad health problems. I believe such a man exists, somewhere in our empire.

As for the Machines, left unchecked they could destroy us all, siphoning up all resources in the galaxy until there is nothing left. Clearly, we must deal quickly and harshly with them.

To-Do List
  • Check for balding
  • Look into hair regrowth/replacement methods if previous is less than promising
  • Send basket/offering of catnip to feline commodore for losses to her 'pride'
  • Make sure to lock doors and apply other security and defensive measures after said basket is sent
In my defense of disobeying and encouraging others to disobey direct orders, all ships lost were doomed before that point. History has shown that there can be a painful attrition rate for ship commanders in this Empire. Add in the kill on that core ship and it was most surely a valid course of action.

Re: Employees of Crossroads Inc.

Greetings Loyal Ployees, Much has transpired since I last have relayed information from the front of the Great War of Unifacation.

Every battle sees new victories but new losses. The Alien Felinoid "Darkevil" has as always preformed above and beyond any expectation. Though in our last battle I had feared even our luck had run... The Mighty Studibaker has taken a terrible beating and I am amazed the old Girl has held together so long.

We were able to escape with the Bucket intake but its been a horrible price, Some of my best friends are dead in battle and I wonder what will come in the future.

Conference from Captain Force to the surviving crew of the Loyalist:

Greetings to my old comrades. I understand we had a close shave at Mygeeto and lost good men, along with our ship the Loyalist. I must say that I am proud of your performance in the battles we have faced, the struggles we have endured. Your efforts have given meaning to the name of our old ship, and for that I applaud you. The Loyalist will be missed, but we must move on. The enemies of the Empire have us surrounded, determined to crush us. We must hunt them down like the vermin they are, chase them to the ends of the Galaxy. This is our great duty, the duty to preserve the last great hope for our Galaxy and to save the ideals of reason in an insane galaxy. Do not fail me or our Emperor, for our work has just begun.

Message to the Guardian Gunship Formation Under the Command of Captain Knight

Fellow member of the Empire's Armed Forces, today we have see the truest example of the fallibility of the Empire, our losses at Wayland, now Vortex after Victory, and at Mygeeto have shown us the true face of our enemy, that of the destructive logic of droids without the Emperor's guiding hand.

On thing you may notice is our Formation's lack of casualties, as we did not participate in those attacks. The conclusion that can be made is that our presence has been a boon to Admiral Samuel's actions here, which leads to the idea that the Strategic Space Command flotilla we are reinforcing shall begin a series of unmatched conquests in all of the Empire's History.

So, all of those who took this Formation's early losses as a sign of a curse, I encourage those that shrugged off those accusation and joined to laugh heartily, and know that we are not cursed, but the opposite, we are now the harbingers of luck to the Empire, we must use our newfound ability well.

Planetary Defense; A consideration
Submited: Captain Crossroads

With our main fources increasing engaged elswhere, we will eventually have to deploy better defense toward our planets. After extensive research into pirate attacks and normal raiding sizes for forces that attack planet, I have reached the conclusion that the following Force of:

1-Victory
2-Dreadnaughts
6-Carracks

Should be more then enough to repell any pirat or raid up to a true invfasion force from outside. At which point I am firmly conffident such a force can delay said attackers till help arrives.

I believe any defensive force also requires fighter support in addition to the capitol ship allotment you have spelled out. This could be in the form of carriers or space station hangers, or even in the placement of Gunboats into the formation. We've seen the dangers of underestimating the enemies fighters and bombers, and we need to plan against it. Any raiding force is likely to have high numbers of fighters, as that is the pattern we have seen in the past.

As for your plan for capital ship deployments, I agree. That force is sufficient for their role. High value worlds, such as SDN, would of course merit a larger defense force.

Although the considerations of Crossroads and Relvenous regarding space defense are valid, we must consider the possibility that we would suffer a defeat in face of a superior enemy fleet. Despite my grave ignorance regarding ground operations, I'm aware of a few key facts:

-The garrison must be at full capacity if possible, with the most variety of useful units and reinforcing structures.
-Defensive structures such as turbolaser towers, theatre shields and magnapulse cannons must be built if feasible.
-Reinforcement points must not fall in the hands of the enemy, or the garrison would be greatly endangered.
-Defensive turrets of all varieties are to be built immediately, as are also Bacta Stations and Repair Stations.

I believe Phongn, Gaius and other Army officers can explain this better than I do. After all, I'm just a Navy captain!

Re: Planetary Defence, a consideration

With regard to the request of my superior, Captain Relvenous. I would cauion against escort carriers. Escort carriers do offer a lot of advantages. However, the build time of carriers speaks against that. For the build time of carriers one can also build a Venator, which has also the bonus of being able to survive in a fight longer than the carrier can.

Carriers do carry four to five squadrons of the newest fighters though, therefore once the prototype TIE Defender has reached completion, carriers might be a good priority. Until then, however, Venators might be a better option. I would further suggest additional procurement of strike cruisers - they are relatively cheap and can handle punishment, plus they are fast to build.

My recommendation though is to split the production lines, if that has not been done already. HPAC should be only building capital ships, whereas the production of escort vessels and cruisers should be left to second-rate worlds.

Re: Planetary Defense, a consideration

I thank Staff Officer Thanas for bringing to my attention the nature of carrier construction. The issue he raises is quite a detractor from the attractiveness of that option. In that case, I would support his suggestion of strike cruisers, with a potential supplement of gunboats for anti-bomber duty. Carriers can be pursued at a later date, when the figthers we are capable of bringing to bear are much more deadly, thus increasing the effectiveness of the carrier.

Staff Officer Thanas also has an excellent suggestion in regards to production and its distribution. Once again, capital ships are a priority as we prepare to bring Sullust back into the Imperial fold. It is sure to have a ready supply of capital ships to throw into any defense, so we must be prepared to match their strength. As Thanas has said, focusing our production where it will be the most efficient is the practical decision at this point.

Due to his ourstanding performance as of recent memory, I recommend Thanas to promotion aboard a newly commisioned ship as Captain. He has the intelligence for the endeavor, and he is not afraid to present ideas contrary to the belief of his superiors. This shows mettle and courage, and strongly supports my recommendation. However, let the Emperor's will be done.

I second Captain Relvenous's motion to promote Staff Officer Thanas to the rank of Captain. He is greatly skilled and has quite the courage.

In regards to ship types, my belief is that Venators are to have initial priority, while we ramp up production of TIE Defenders to give the escort carriers a bigger punch and better use.

Of course, one should not forget land-based anti-ship weapons such as the Hypervelocity Cannon. They are vital for the defense of our systems, but I recommend that they should be built only on front line planets with a high risk of attack, as building slots are precious things we must conserve.

while I'm cheered by the news that new packs of my assault frigates will be created in defence of our precious empire i must be a realist about their capabilities. A full pack was unable to bring down one of those hulking mechanoid abominations and i want to know what our defence strategy is should a machine battleship appear on the offensive.

If no strategy presents itself I propose we knowingly deploy excessive force to prevent this becoming a problem and send the Star fist and its fleet to neutralize the machine empire immediately. We cannot afford to lose a world to the machines knowing their intentions.

There's a readme file at this link.
It goes over the ships in it.

I would also recommend we get a carrier unit that I think can only be made at Kuat. I played this mod the other night and came at a system with just 5 of the carriers and some support units. The carriers spit out a lot of Tie Defender squadrons, which ended up owning a lot of rebel scum. I'll see if I can put up a screen shot. As a side note, the Defenders shoot Ion cannons before proton torpedoes... which destroy shields before ignoring them. I'll also check at what tech level you can make them.

If you select the 'retreat' option, you lose any ships below a certain health threshold. I chose to interpret this as them losing FTL, so the crews were transferred off and the ships scuttled before the retreat (as long as they've managed to disengage from the main combat).

Yes but don't worry, at this rate you will have a new ship soon.

With regard to construction, there is sufficient income to do one of these things per week;
* Build 2/3 of a star dreadnought.
* Build two large cruisers.
* Build four destroyers or light carriers.
* Build full space or ground defences on one planet.
* Build a complete planetary garrison on three planets.
* Remove corruption across about 50% of Imperial space.

I would say remove corruption, as I think that boosts income also, I don't remember the game mechanics, but at least we won't have to deal with Space Dickbags blowing up my Formation. Edit: Just normal Space Morons.

So I was lucky ;-)

Regarding new constructions, I'd recommend splitting it to build one large cuiser, two destroyers and a planetary garrison.
I do support the creation of Guard Squadrons as proposed by Cpt Crossroads, whenever funding is available.
