I'm not sure if it's relevant, but here's a quote from Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader:
Dark Lord wrote:But the interceptor would do, at least until Sienar Fleet Systems completed the starfighter that was being built to his specifications.
"The interceptor" refers to the black Eta-2 Actis fighter that he was using in the meantime, until this unnamed starfighter was completed.

Could the as-yet-unfinished starfighter referred to in the book refer to the one he flies in Episode IV?

Simple resentment. Far too many people in this "community" represent the "too dorky to be a jock, too stupid to be a techie" demographic. The larger fanbase of millions of casual Star Wars fans laughs their asses off at them, but in the community, they think they're cool because they've essentially congregated.

You have people who call themselves "collectors" (essentially, adults who still play with toys and dolls), and you have costumers (people who think that every day is Halloween), and you have all sorts of other people who exist on the fringe of normal society and who get laughed at on TV shows like David Letterman, but who have convinced themselves that they're normal and healthy compared to people like me, who don't do any of that shit but who enjoy the exercise of applying our technical knowledge to the world of Star Wars.

That's the surrealism of the Star Wars official fan clubs, and it's probably best exemplified by this dork accusing me of being "nerdy" because I pointed out that the "3 million clonetrooper" figure didn't make any sense.

Image

When people like this think that they have the right to accuse techies of being too "nerdy", you've entered the Idiot Zone.

Far too slim and the body shape beneath the outfit suggests a hot-looking chick, not some middle aged harpy. If you assume both women in the picture are the same age, that also rules out Ms. Travesty.

Speaking of Traviss, I read her latest OS blog entry (dated June 16th) and I nearly choked on my sandwich:
It's lovely to know that so many of you care and want to support me when I'm targeted by trolls.
*Sigh*

I'm beginning to really dislike those rants of her. She exaggerates the situation and is extremely patronizing.

I would give Bullwinkle the same 'tip' i would give to Bryan Lambert: if you live in a glass house, dont own a trebuchet*.

*Trebuchet--that's French for "A big ass catapult"

Hmm, it appears Mandalorians are hotter than i first suspected. Though you cant tell what she really looks like wearing a freakin' helmet. She could take that thing off and be like a tragedy or something.

You know, it's all very surreal. Requesting that people back up their claims is forbidden, and people posting detailed wookie/human pairings aren't considered crazy while people that have actual knowledge are when they apply it to Star Wars. I don't understand why anyone smart enough to see the idiocity would want to be there.

There's just layers and layers to this. Why should they oppose those who disagree with the numbers? Like the guy in the picture who looks like Mork from Orc got bit by a radioactive Buckwheat, wouldn't it be far simpler to just nod and agree rather than fighting to defend in an area where one has no interest in the first place? I can see why someone who wrote it would be stubborn because they didn't want to be embarrassed, but if I'll you're doing is writing about Wookiee hairstyles on the message board, then what does it matter if it was three million or three hundred trillion? It has no affect on you, on what interests you about Star Wars.

Simple: it's not about the numbers themselves. It's about keeping people like us out of their little club. They oppose our arguments solely because they come from people like us, not because they can actually find real flaws in the logic.

It's that goddamned tribe mentality at work: they (see? I'm doing it, too) divide the world into "us vs them"; the dorks vs everyone else. A whole bunch of them congregate, and -- wonder of wonders! -- an author shows up. She's one of them! Of course, they trip over themselves to welcome her, make her stay nice, etc.; then, she publishes something atrociously wrong, and the techies go on the march. Now, they already know about the techies -- Saxtonites who want to crunch everything down to cold, heartless numbers and indulge in glorious fantasies over the strength of a turbolaser blast, or the energetic output of a lightsabre -- so they don't like the techies, but now, it's even worse: the techies are threatening a member of the tribe. So, even though they don't particularly care about the issue itself, they care that a member of their tribe feels threatened, and that's why people leap to defend them.

Reminds me of this old quote by an anonymous poster on RASSM years ago who argued with the EU-lovers of that era against the 8km Executor...

The funny thing about the word "troll" is that it originally had a definition, but that definition has been largely ignored. Someone who says something just to get a reaction is a troll, but people like Dork Moose use the word "troll" against people who are making earnest arguments, thus demonstrating that they either don't know or don't care what the word really means.

I wonder if there's not some equivocation on "troll" going on here: we tend to use it to mean "some jackass who wanders in and debates badly", whereas others tend to use it to mean "some jackass who wanders in and screws up the order of things". I'm fairly certain the real definition is, "some jackass who wanders in and stirs shit for giggles", but there you are. Perhaps in Dark Moose's little world, we are actually making all this fuss for fun just to see him and Traviss outraged.

The term "troll" is the internet equivalent of "terrorist." Both are so freely bandied about these days that they've lost their true meaning.

Well yeah he probably actually believes he's in the right. Firstly i doubt he actually knows or cares about what a military on the scale of a galaxy would look like; secondly, and most importantly, he most surely for whatever retarded reason (possibly some kind of attraction?) believes this Traviss chick's claims of 'abuse' since he seems almost obsessive about stamping out those who have 'harassed' her.

He probably thinks those who argue against Traviss are being 'antagonistic' by 'disrupting' the 'discussion' over there. In his point of view, that is. From where he stands, being a quiet, simplistic debater who doesnt question the status quo is a 'good' poster while someone who does question and does analyze the situation is a 'troll'.

Ironic we're talking about points of view, considering the subject is Star Wars ("From my point of view the Jedi are evil" and all that).

It wouldn't be the first time a female poster has been given powder-puff treatment on a message board. I seem to remember we had one a while back whose "crybaby" bullshit was tolerated for quite a while as well.

Compound her gender with the fact that she's a celebrity of sorts and it's not difficult to understand why certain people give her preferential treatment.

If Obi-Wan had posted here, this is what that exchange would have been like:

"I have failed you, Anakin; I have failed you."
"I should have known the Jedi were plotting to take over!"
"Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil!"
"From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!"
"Your point of view is goddamned stupid, you inbred retard; what else am I supposed to call a man who plots to take over the galaxy and kills trillions of beings in the process?"

The point is, of course, that not all points of view are rational; we're not talking the laws of physics here.

I think the true irony began the day the side who kept referring to their opponent's with the name of an Islamic terrorist group turned into the Iraqi Minister of Information. "There are only 6 of them. We have crushed them all. They are just the same people running all over the Internet. All the evidence supports us. They are all crazed misogynists, trolls every last one of them... which is 6, of course."

And that's it's own kind of funny. "Of course you can wage a war with 3 million clones! Look, these six guys have taken over the Internet!"

And just regarding his moderating behavior in general... I'll give a dollar to anyone who asks him if his next step is for that place is to be re-organized into the Empire - a safe and secure webboard.
