Things such as portabe Void shield generators, and other such things could allow them to force a Hoth style engagement, which would be to the advantage of the IG.
Er, so if the guardsman get shields, does this mean the Republic gets them too?
Moreover, If they hide under the shield, how is the IG gonna fight back? I presume the shield is double-blind.
Connor MacLeod wrote:Define how well dug in. Are they going to be dug in well enough to withstand sustained bombardment by thousands of 100-kiloton range-directed-yield fusion rockets? (to say nothing of nuclear-yield bombardment by thousands of Juggernauts..)
It depends how much time and resources the Guard have to work with, since if they get enough time and equipment then establishing a theatre shield isn't out of the question.
What are the parameters of the shield? (Endurance against weapons fire, dimensions, coverage.. requirements for penetration by troops or weaponry and whatnot, etc.)
Gunhead wrote:For the Guard to able to force a Hoth style engament, they'd need to be able to force the Clones to attack them. IG in general has the tactical flexibility of a lame duck. It either steamrolls forward, or digs in and holds.
Even if the IG can deploy a void shield that can withstand all that the Clones can throw at it, they'd still need to protect their supplies. Supplies need to move, and I seriously doubt the IG can field enough void shield generators to cover their whole supply chain.

Depending on how durably the shield is reinforced, perhaps they can bombard it hard enough to make it buckle and fall inwards on the IG (half-serious)

ROTS kinda clearly shows shields will stop physical matter.
I know that, I was refering to the fact that he said clones and walkers could pass through a void shield. Theres no arguement that SW sheilds can stop either or both matter and energy.
They allow the passage of matter of a certain mass/velocity (or momentum, the combination of the two.) individual battle droids walking through aren't quite the same as a high-velocity projectile hitting them. (more to the point, droids aren't organic. Organic troops ened to be completely armored like clonetroopers or they get incinerated. Means any exposed parts are going to be ash trying to walk through a shield. And even if they do, they could very well get mowed down by Clone gunnery, especially if they've been setting up repeating blasters.)
Also, if we start bringing shields and heavy firepower into this, whats to stop the Republic from using, say.. Seismic charges? Or equipping gunships and SPHA-Ts with much higher yield warheads (given that Gunships can use antimatter warheads as well as fusion, I find it quite easy to believe they could employ directed multi-megaton warheads.)
At the worst, they'd just have to roll some SPHA-Ts into Line of sight and then open up. (re-fit a dozen or so with missiles or turbolasers, the rest for anti-air, and walk them into range of the shield, then cut loose with bombardment - everything else would be optimized for anti-missile/anti-air/ground defense.
The Guard could send whole companies of men under the shield with Termites, Moles and/or Hellbores. Void Shield aren't double-blinds. Titans shoot out from them all the time. We musn't forget all the Imperium's toys!
