This Russian song captures it perfectly, IMO. Here's the English translation (no, it's not mine)
Lyube (Lube)
A toast

* Translation note: The Russian Expression "Davaj za!" basically means "Let's for it for…". It is also use at the beginning of toast as in "Let's drink for…"and "A toast to…" In this song, I decided to translated the expression as "A toast to.." since it just has more meaning to me, this way. Replace this expression by "Just do it for…" and you'll get a different meaning :)

War and na nanana..
War and nananana

With grey clouds the sky is veiled
Nerves tensed such as guitar strings
Rain drumming from morning to night
Frozen time seems an eternity
We assualt from all directions
Tanks, infnatry, artillery's fire
They are killing us, but we're surviving
And once again, we throw ourselves in an attack

A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
A toast to those, who were with us back then
A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
We'll remember those who were with us back then

The sky above us, in leaden clouds
Lies low in cold mists
We'd like to believe that everything's over
If only the wounded comrade could survive
Wait up bro, don't die yet
You will live long and happily
We will dance at your wedding
And you'll raise your kids up in the sky

A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
A toast to those who wait for you at home
A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
A toast to those who wait for you at home

A toast to them, a toast to us
To Siberia and to the Caucasus
To the lights of far-away cities
And to friends, and to love
A toast to them, a toast to us
And to the Paras, and to the Spetznas
To war honors
Come on, lets raise it, friend

A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
A toast to those, who were with us back then
A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
We'll remember those who were with us back then

A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
A toast to those who wait for you at home
A toast to life, come on brother, until the end
A toast to those who wait for you at home

In old album, I found a picture
Grandpa, what a man, commander of Red Army
Signed "For son to remeber, Berlin 1945"
Passed century flashbacks
The smell of unmawed grass in the dawn,
Moans of scorched earth from bombardements
Pair of old soldier's boots
New wars will replace the old ones

A toast to life
A toast to those
A toast to life
Let's remember those who were with us
from here

And here's the MP3 of that same song, for those interested. Save as, and all that
Lyube (Lube)
Soldier

Third day on the road, wind, stones, rains,
Still ahead and ahead, our company holds up
Third day on the road, hey, brother, don't be sad -
An order is an order, every one of us knows.

Write a little letter, nothing is dearer for fighters.
Write a couple of words, you girls, for your boys.

And at sunrise ahead marches on the company of soldiers
Goes on, to win and to not die;
And you, give them a smoke out there, comrade chief sergeant,
I believe in your spirit, soldier, soldier, soldier…

Third day on the road, wind, stones, rains,
At sunrise we to battle, the day shall begin with fire.
Third day on the road, and who knows what awaits us,
Third day on the road and sunrise comes.

Write a little letter, how is our beloved home doing?
From far-far away clouds shall carry it to me.
And at sunrise the company goes on ahead.

Earth fell, from the sky earth fell,
Tearing the scream: "A bitch you are, war!"
Armor melted, the machine gun choked breathlessly,
You looked into the eyes of death, sergeant of the guard.

Have a very nice day.

For the four people ruthlessly murdered in Dorchester in a basement last night. May your killers be brought to justice.

On this day in 1916 the British 36th (Ulster) Division attacked the Schwaben Redoubt, one of few regiments to make gains on the first day of the Battle Of The Somme. Over 5000 men from the 36th died in the first day of that attack. May they never be forgotten.

My son John was tall and slim
And he had a leg for every limb
Now he's got no legs at all
They're both shot away with a cannonball
Well were you drunk or were you blind
To leave your two fine legs behind
Or was it from walking upon the sea
That took your legs from the ground to the knee
I wasn't drunk and I wasn't blind
To leave my two fine legs behind
Was a cannonball on the fifth of May
Took my two fine legs away
And all the foreign wars I'll now denounce
'Twixt this king of England or that king of France
I'd rather my legs as they used to be
Than the king of Spain and his whole navy
For I was tall and I was slim
And I had a leg for every limb
Now I've got no legs at all
You can't win a race with a cannonball
For I was tall and I was slim
And I had a leg for every limb
Now I've got no legs at all
You can't win a race with a cannonball

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

Lest we forget.

In memory of all who paid the ultimate price for their country. May we never know such war again. For all those who have seen hell, and lived to tell the tale.

May it never happen again.
