Near Culture Orbital Broken Dawn some hours later.

The Attack had begun 2 hours ago, when the Lensman fleet had launched its first massive salvo of Dirable torpedoes in system. The torps came in fast, and were as stealthed as the Lensman could make them. But they didn’t last long.

None of the salvo made it anywhere near the orbital, the time to target was too long, the Culture ships too quick and their scanners too good.

Telemetry from the missiles showed that this tactic was ineffective, so instead of launching their next missiles swarm at the system, the Lensmen ships held them in their tractors then fired in a concentrated wave.

This wave did better, with two torps getting nearly within strike range of the orbital before being effectored to inertness.

The Lensman fleet were now entering the system’s Oart cloud. As they launched their next cloud of missiles they came within easy range of the Culture ships.

The GCUs and GOU in the system had been joined by the six harassing ROU and by a second GOU the thousand cuts The storm of warheads and plasma globes they threw at the Lensman fleet annihilated the leading edge of the formation in a wall of coruscating energies.

The Lensman fleet pumped out another swarm of missiles as it ran through the ruins of its own forward elements. They were still having trouble actually seeing the Culture craft through their layers of stealth, but hopefully their missiles’ own sensors would have a better time of it once they got closer.

The Culture ships however were not about to let this happen. Several of the warhead swarms that they had fired were targeted among the incoming volley, most of it didn’t get through.

Not that that really mattered. The Lensman fleet were right on the heels of their missiles: a few dozen more died before they hit beam range, but this didn’t slow them at all.

Streams of coruscating energies lashed from the Lensman fleet seeking the frantically evading Culture ships. However even they could only dodge so fast. One by one they were tagged with tractors and pounded to bits, or just ran into a lucky shot.

The last GOU (theBurning Flesh! Burning Flesh! HAHAHAHA!) threw itself into the heart of the Lensman formation, thousands of missiles and plasma balls pumping from its displacers fuck you. were its last words before a Gating primary slashed across it leaving it a drifting ruin.

The somewhat battered Lensman fleet formed up and began to move in system again.

elsewhere.

Hunter group 489 consisted of forty Wolf class SDs. Their job was to find and destroy Culture craft and habitats around the fringes of the war zone.

Currently, they thought they had a good catch.

Somewhere in their sweep area was a factory ship. They had narrowed the area of search to half of a star system.

It was somewhere there....

The first indication they had was when one of their number suddenly stopped transmitting.

The five nearest vessels moved in to the area of its last transmission. They found only an expanding cloud of radiation and gas.

The ships spread out and began to scan, the Culture ship couldn’t have gone far... maybe into the local gas giant.... this was soon confirmed as a the sleek phallic shape of a Culture war vessel rose from the clouds.

The Lensmens’ commanders were, when their brains caught up, somewhat surprised to find a Culture warship, they were hunting a factory vessel after all.

They didn’t get long to wonder about this.

The war proper begins I see.

And I note the GP is learning that hunting a supposedly lone Culture production ship isn't as easy as it sounds.

Only if they get off a transmission stating that.

I think they'll learn after a few of their Hunter fleets vanish.

Eventually they're going to put two and two together on that one.

Nice chapter !

Hmm... hunting a Culture factory ship sounds like a BAD idea... why is a ship a factory ship ? Because it likes to produce things  !

True, but still only after they lose two or three...

Well since _SV's are the main type of mentioned factory ships, maybe we are going to see a major fight. remember in look to windward it was mentioned that a military GSV was the most powerful ship out there and pretty much had to win the fight to survive :D Can't leave all the action to the little guys, and there should also be a lot more military GCU's as well. The war just ended, they have not begun the disarming yet.

yes the war goes well for civilization
that is :D :D :D
the accursed degenrate culture has already
lost one system at a very low cost to the
mighty galactic patrol :D :D :D :D

and thanks for the new chapter

GREAT JOB :D

Same tactic as the during the great war. Why would they need to hold a system when they have nothing immobile in it? Retreat and slowly grind down the lensman forces until the time is ripe to go on the offensive!

You brainless, twist. The Galactic Patrol still has to fight the Orbital. I imagine that orbital has been manufcaturing as many weapons as it cna in preperation...

And let us see what happens when the GP's try to secure the system with their immobile fortresses  They are going to have to tie up a great many fleet assets if they actually plan to defend any captured systems 8)

why waste time secureing the system destroy it and move
much to dangerous to stay in one place to long

its not like the gp is killing people
whats passes for people in the culture
is little more than domesticated animals
or better known as house pets not
worth saveing

Better to be an apathetic than a genocidal maniac like the GP is. lets see, their tactis involve mostly blowing up large civilian population centers while the culture changes all civilisations it meets usually for the better using subtle means.
Hmmm...A utopian civilisation or a brutal bloodthirsty dictatorship. Guess which one I am rooting for :P
