TIL (while writing a lecture on the subject) that one George Harrison, amatuer clockmaker, built a clock for a clocktower in Brocklesby Park in England in 1722 that still runs accurately today. It's only stopped once, and that was done deliberately in 1884 so they could repair the tower.

To paraphrase Warhammer 40k, the tower broke before the clock did.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

It's something else entirely- firefighting cribbing is the use of blocks and wedges, typically made of wood, to stabilize vehicles, machinery, or buildings during rescue operations. It involves stacking lumber to fill gaps and support heavy loads, preventing movement that could injure victims or rescuers. The goal is to provide a stable, secure base while lifting or working on a compromised structure or vehicle.

Well, that was informative, thanks.

Hi, have one in my basement as structural support and worked at Home Depot for two years. Those things are a cast-iron bitch to move around.

BOSS: "Eyo, Matty! We need to get a dozen lally columns on the white truck out front, now."

Apparently they don't make them like they used to, these days being made with thinner steel so they're not as strong.

It's primarily concrete, just with a metal sheathe. The ones I have and sold, anyway.

So I've read, it's just that the steel casing is thinner. The concrete is best for the compressive loads those columns bear. Of course it could just as well be that the columns themselves are thinner. Of course from what you've described they're still heavy as fuck

Trust me, I was told to do a job that takes two people by myself on the regular at that place. On the one hand, I don't look like much but I'm strong as fuck. Not bragging, it is what it is. On the other, there's the balance issue, which is not my strong (haha) area.

In D&D terms, if I remember correctly, my Constitution is highest, Intelligence second, Strength third, next Charisma, Wisdom distantly lagging, and Dexterity's my dump stat. I was never an optimally-built character.

Learned footy and MMA by doing it a lot (which fed into each other a little; I played center defender and a few other teams didn't like me much. I actually did do archery back for a few years back when I was at uni. I took it up party because it let me learn on how to loose arrows, and partly because it was mostly standing still

As far as football goes, I absolutely hated heading the ball and avoided it wherever I could. I made a fair defender, my strategy was simple but deceptively effective- get between the ball and the goal

The art of the bow and arrow is quite complex and I taught it professionally. I enjoy the Zen aspect of it.

Well, yeah? That's the idea right? The other guys learned pretty fast that I was to be avoided, because my plan B was, "Take the foul, get a yeliow or red card." I like hurting people and I'm blocking that shit.

It's funny, they initially assumed I was the weak point in any defence. Right up till the point where I started sniping the ball- more than one striker's run was spoiled when I stole the ball with a single well-aimed kick

I scored one goal ever. One of the proudest moments of my life. Sheer luck, right place right time. That just wasn't really my job. My job was to be fat and aggressive in front of the goaltender. Fortunately one of our best strikers had the ball, and he saw how I was positioned and my, "I got this!" gestures, and made the right call.

Same. I was... not popular with our neighboring teams. There was the unsettling "obliterated testicles, no recovery possible.' incident. But that wasn't really my fault.
