Channel Awesome accused of mismanagement

Daily Dot
Former contributors allege mismanagement and misconduct at Channel Awesome
Audra Schroeder— 2018-04-04 04:35 pm

Channel Awesome (Fair Use) Remix by Jason Reed

A Google doc is breaking open the YouTube channel’s ‘history of silence.’

Former contributors and producers of YouTube’s Channel Awesome have alleged misconduct and ineptitude against its management, including CEO Mike Michaud, talent Doug Walker (aka Nostalgia Critic and That Guy With the Glasses), and his brother, Rob Walker.

On Monday, an extensive Google doc was published on Twitter that contains more than 20 accounts from former contributors, with accusations ranging from poor communication and management skills to verbal abuse and bullying to sexual misconduct and harassment. The document also includes anonymous accounts of misconduct against a former producer who was not named. A document of fan interactions was published as well.

Across the accounts, a pattern of neglect, bullying, and miscommunication emerges, as does a pattern of placing blame and harassment on contributors, women especially. Contributors and producers were not generally paid by Channel Awesome (CA). “Our payment was exposure,” Allison Pregler, a producer from 2010-2015, told the Daily Dot.

The doc’s creation stemmed from Twitter conversations in early March that grew deeper and wider, with more people sharing stories and experiences. Since the doc was published, at least two more contributors have left Channel Awesome, and fans have distanced themselves as well. The hashtag #ChangeTheChannel has also been circulating.
More in the article, but it seems that Channel Awesome is falling apart, now that several former contributors are airing their dirty laundry.

This is sad to find out. I read the document when Linkara published a link to it in his leaving announcement.

I mean some of the things complained about seem minor (basically amateur moviemakers aren't good at moviemaking? Shock) but they all add up to a nasty pattern before sexual misconduct is added in.

Googledoc is here if people want to peruse it.

A lot of this stuff has been circulating for years, only now it is all in one place and documented by former producers themselves.

A lot of the YouTuber channels that I have been watching have been fairly balanced in their discussion of the topic. Everyone is in agreement that the CEO of Channel Awesome, Mike Michaud, is just a big giant donkey dick and lacks any sort of ability to communicate and implement company policy. Amazingly, The Walker Brothers are fairly unscathed; besides the incompetence and amateur hour antics at being a director/writer.

The Walker Brothers need to come out in front of this and make a concerted effort to engage with their fans and former producers. The official PR release, "We are sincerely sorry you felt that way." just isn't going to cut it.

Our Response
Posted by: Channel Awesome in Channel Awesome April 11, 2018 257 Comments

Since the posting of the “Not So Awesome” document on Monday, April 2, 2018, we have been exploring all of our options of how to address the lies that have been alleged by multiple disgruntled individuals with vindictive intentions.

Channel Awesome has always tried to keep our dealings with our content partners out of the public eye and despite any differences or disagreements we have never publicly spoken negatively about any of them, but a response to the accusations leveled against us must happen.

Obviously, we cannot address all 73 plus pages of accusations against us in this forum, but we will address the most egregious now.

ACCUSATION – Jane Doe accuses us of knowing about a “sexual deviant” for over a year (Page 66).

FACT – The screen shot below clearly demonstrates the time elapsed from being made aware of the individual in question (name redacted for legal reasons) and the time the content partner was released from Channel Awesome – 3 weeks, not over a year. During the 3 week period, we consulted a lawyer and waited to see if anyone would come directly to us, as our only knowledge of this was second hand.

It is obvious the person who came forward with this in the Not So Awesome document wants their name protected, so we will continue to do so.

ACCUSATION – Sean Fausz accuses former Channel Awesome COO and founder, Michael Ellis, of a conversation of sexual nature that lasted over two hours (Page 49 & 50.)

FACT – Michael Ellis resigned from the company and no contact from Michael Ellis was attempted after the conversation was reported to Michael Michaud. With any termination involving a founder and shareholder, legal separation must happen and this takes time.

ACCUSATION – Multiple content partners state payment for their contributions to the site were not compensated.

FACT – From the beginning of the site, anyone that has been added as a content partner was informed that ChannelAwesome.com was an aggregator for their content. At no time did Channel Awesome take a cut of their videos, as the practice is with Multi Channel Networks (MCNs). We never wanted to be an MCN and only asked them to schedule their videos that they already were doing for Blip.tv and YouTube.
We gave them access to over 30 million page views and over a million unique viewers a month at our height. Channel Awesome viewed the partnership as a way to help content partners grow their audience while bringing in new content and increasing the community within the site.

Further benefiting content partners, Channel Awesome covered all costs associated with server, hosting and labor costs associated with maintenance and updates. Some content partners even had their servers for their own sites paid for by Channel Awesome. None of these costs were ever passed along to our content partners.

ACCUSATION – The document talks about the drop in traffic to the site.

FACT – While we did have an initial drop after the switch to Demo Reel, the real hit to the site’s traffic came from our growing presence on YouTube. When we relaunched the Nostalgia Critic show in January of 2013, Blip.tv decided to start placing the full episode up on the LeagueofSuperCritics channel a week after we launched it on Thatguywiththeglasses.com.

As we grew on LeagueofSuperCritics more and more viewers decided to watch it on YouTube instead of our site. The biggest blow to site traffic came before the downfall of Blip.tv. While we won’t go into full details, we were forced to abandon the LeagueofSuperCritics channel and instantly start achannelthatsawesome in May, 2015. This is the point when traffic began to quickly drop off our site (now Channelawesome.com). One of the biggest accusers stated that they might still be on the site if the views were there. As stated by Kaylyn below:

ACCUSATION – Multiple content partners have alleged our Anniversary Specials were not compensated for time worked and crossover videos were asked to be turned over, if filmed, to Channel Awesome.

FACT – When invitations for the Anniversary Specials were issued, we made it clear to all content partners that their participation was on a voluntary basis. In addition, content partners were always given the option of declining our invitation with no questions asked and no repercussions. We understood we were asking our content partners to give up their time and that not everyone could do that.

The Producer Contract for Channel Awesome 3rd Anniversary Film Participation also outlined the following terms and conditions for those who did agree to participate, including:
• Participation was voluntary
• Crossovers were never required

Everyone who attended the anniversary was told that Channel Awesome would cover the cost of travel, lodging, breakfast, lunch, and dinner if the filming went late.

ACCUSATION – A few content partners alleged a misogynistic work atmosphere by Channel Awesome.

FACT – Channel Awesome’s current and former female staff, including Tamara Chambers, Rachel Tietz, Aiyanna Wade, and Heather Reusz, have had vastly different experiences than the ones described. We are always trying to improve ourselves both personally and professionally and moving forward we will implement mandatory sensitivity training for all staff to ensure we maintain a culture of respect for all employees.

ACCUSATION – Holly Brown makes numerous accusations throughout the document.

FACT – Holly Brown is a former employee and shareholder who was allowed to resign. Unfortunately her accusations are not true and are vindictive in nature.

ACCUSATION – Holly Brown alleges CEO Michael Michaud, is sole owner of the Nostalgia Critic IP.

FACT – The IP is owned by Channel Awesome, Inc. The partnership is owned by four individuals with a 5th person joining ownership by the end of the year.

ACCUSATION – Holly Brown alleges Channel Awesome had her work during “To Boldly Flee” after her surgery.

FACT – During this time, Robert Walker, Doug Walker and Michael Michaud told her she did not have to work. Site updates were performed by others as she recovered.

ACCUSATION – Lindsay Ellis alleges Doug Walker and Channel Awesome ignored concerns regarding the “transformation scene.”

FACT – As the screen shot below shows, Lindsay was repeatedly asked for her opinion and approval of the scene before it was finalized. Lindsay even helped Doug make the scene sound ‘better.’

ACCUSATION – Lindsay Ellis alleges Channel Awesome did not do enough to protect female content partners from abusive commenters.

FACT – Channel Awesome has a strict policy regarding our community including IP banning all abusive posters, as well as banning their account via username and email and continuing to monitor our forums. We worked with Lindsay directly to help her address issues resulting from an abusive commenter.

ACCUSATION – Allison Pregler states “not a single person wasn’t miserable.”

FACT – In this video, you’ll find that Allison says that it “was a great production to be a part of. It was a lot of fun to be a part of this and Suburban Knights.”

ACCUSATION – Multiple content partners addressed the lack of communication.

FACT – We agree communication could have and should have been better. We got into this business based on our passion for content creation and have had many growing pains over the years. We always strive to learn from our mistakes and strengthen our skills.
Have we made mistakes? Yes, we have. We even discuss some of our challenges in our behind the scenes videos. We’ve always focused on trying to entertain our viewers, shine spotlights on unknown talent and share our attention with various charities – and we hope to continue to do so moving forward.

Partly due to this it's also come to light that Justin 'JewWarrior' Carmical was a sexual predator. This has been confirmed by Kaylyn 'MarzGurl' Saucedo and Jacob Chapman (formerly Jesu Otaku) as with supporting evidence presented in the anonymous section of the former contributor complaints document as well as screenshots posted by channel awesome in this most recent document.

Well that last bit is sad, I had pictured Justin as the fun old man who got into this fancy video thing on the internet grew distraught over personal and took his own life in quietness and isolation. The fact he was a predator as well man.... He was always so nice seeming as if he was always slightly surprised people were happy to see him 24/7.

At the risk of sounding (being?) insensitive, I didn't really watch much of CA's content, I'm glad Linkara wasn't among the bad actors.
Seeing current events as they are is wrecking me emotionally. So I say 'farewell' to this forum. For anyone who wonders.

The sad thing about this is that the people who wrote Not So Awesome didn't reveal it was Justin sooner because they were trying to protect the victims, at least one of whom is known personally by the company's former PR manager, Holly Brown. And that was the right way to handle it, because there is a risk not only of re-victimizing the people who came forward with their stories, but also from overshadowing the other issues with site management. Its not like JewWario is going to come back from the dead, so what really matters is that they knew about both his and Mike Ellis's sexual abuses and in both cases did nothing until forced to! Among all the other mismanagement stories they try and fail to refute.

Now the only reason the former producers and the former PR manager have admitted that it was Justin Carmical is that the chat log released by CA was so poorly redacted people could actually make out his screen name reasonably enough and the details fit the date of his leaving so well that some on CA's own forums (which are effectively unmoderated right now) are speculating that Mike Michaud did it on purpose to intimidate the people who came forward. Even if not, its just another example of the site's owners being incredibly unprofessional. If you are going to bother redacting the details, as you should, do it properly or don't release it at all!

Anyway, when they released that document they still had about twelve producers on the team. Now? They've lost a brand sponsorship, they lost all but four producers including Angry Joe (despite the fact he is still listed as a partner, which probably isn't going to last very long), Team Four Star is no longer listed as a partner (nor is The Spoony Experiment, but that could have happened a while ago, I don't know), and of the four producers they still have one of them is the Nostalgia Critic himself so he really shouldn't count. Their producers could at any time drop even further because Guru Larry has said he doesn't care if he remains on the site even though he hasn't technically quit; instead he has apparently been trolling the internet badmouthing his bosses in order to see if they will can him first. I guess he's having fun, at least. In fact, the only person not associated directly with Doug Walker's Chicago production who has said they will definitely stay is Brad Jones, who apparently is only sticking around on principle of loyalty and nothing more. Channel Awesome can no longer call itself a content aggregator because it has lost virtually everyone whose content they were aggregating. And this "rebuttal" document was the straw that broke the camel's back. Most of the producers are convinced that it is full of outright lies and douchbaggery; for instance, Sean Faust tweeted that their rebuttal of his story about Mike Ellis sexually harassing him basically boiled down to "you're a liar for telling the truth!" Really, they apparently confirmed that Ellis was harassing Sean but call Sean a liar anyway. To think, just a few months ago they were planning a ten year anniversary movie!

I'm almost certain the JewWario stuff was known about previously. Certainly at the time of his death I remember some people discussing the allegations.

Yeah, that's the shittiest part about how badly CA is handling this. Instead of an apology and promise to do better, which is all the #ChangeTheChannel was after, they've produced two completely off mark non-apologies the most recent of which has caused additional harm to victims of sexual abuse. Sexual abuse which the heads of Channel Awesome covered up for the sake of their own image.

It's just a total shit show and it serves them right that they have no talent left and that sponsors are dropping them. Their YouTube channel is down nearly 35k subs but more importantly their views are down nearly 8% on a channel that only posts videos produced at their Chicago studio. Their main page traffic, once this shit storm dies down, will be even lower than that as it's a complete ghost town compared to where it was 2 weeks ago.

By the way, DO NOT go on their forums right now, ESPECIALLY if you are at work. I said they were unmoderated, but after waking up this morning I decided to check their thread on the subject and discovered a troll posting actual porn and gore pics for shits and giggles. I REPEAT: DO NOT GO ON THEIR FORUMS. IT IS NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

Fuck internet trolls. Fuck them where it hurts.

Yeah, the forum has become a complete Mod free zone and the vultures have swooped in. There's no good reason to go there anymore, go back to around page 99 or so if you're interested in picking up a discord link to continue the discussion somewhere with actual mods. The only real news yet to break is another response from Channel Awesome or one of the few remaining producers finally leaving as well and given that one has stated he won't leave (The Cinema Snob) and the other has stated he's only staying to watch things burn from the inside (Guru Larry) there's not much left to monitor.

As much fun as the forums were before the trolls hit in full force this dumpster fire's smoke has gotten way too toxic to stand close to.

And of course, the fact they literally do not have anyone moderating their forums is another sign they are doing everything wrong right now. The flamewarring that was happening the last couple days was bad enough, but the fact no one is there to delete shit that even 4-chan won't allow shows how serious Linkara's allegations are about their treatment of their forum. It might seem like a little thing, but as they are a corporation, it really isn't. Did they even bother to hire another PR manager after Holly Brown got fired? At all? :finger:

From what I understand they never hired any PR manager. It's been speculated that Mike Michaud's brother Greg did it part-time as a favor to his brother. At this point, I don't see why they don't just close the forum and disable comments on the site until this blows over but I also don't understand their entire response so...This whole thing is a mess that only validates the complaints made against Channel Awesome.

Oh, wait, never mind. The Not So Awesome document says she was Human Resources, not PR. Never mind. Somehow I'm still left wondering if they ever replaced her.

Also, there are people out there who are taking the Justin Carmical reveal as meaning that the people behind Not So Awesome are also complicit in keeping everything under the rug until this point. However, this is simply untrue as per this twitter thread:
@quatoria wrote:
  • Since people are throwing accusations around, I guess I should make some things clear as well. I found out about Justin's behavior a short time before his suicide, after he had already been removed from the position that gave him access to fangirls.
  • I didn't contact the authorities, and I shouldn't have to explain this, because the victim who told me their story *specifically innstructed me to contact no one else*. The other producers didn't know. I knew, the victims knew, CA Admin knew, and *maybe* three other humans.
  • I shouldn't have to explain that when you are told to keep something in confidence by the victim of a crime like this, a crime that is about violating their autonomy, personhood&self - YOU DO WHAT THEY ASK YOU TO DO. This has only come out now, because they decided it was time.
  • To do otherwise, especially fueled up on the notion that you will somehow save somebody else by forcing this victim into a legal situation, that you will unilaterally decide to put the victim of a sex crime through police and courts because YOU think it's best, is GROTESQUE.
  • And to act as though its some clear cut night and day situation, to fabricate accusations against producers who had no idea what was up and act as though they should be trashed for not calling the cops - to use this violation as *ammunition* for yr grudge - is beyond vile.
In other words, no one who made or appeared in tribute videos for JewWario back in the day had any idea about the skeletons in his closet, save possibly Doug Walker (and even that I would not be so sure on given his sheer aversion to conflict and drama). Most of the people who worked on Not So Awesome didn't know either except those who collected the victim's stories such as Allison Pregler and Holly Brown, who have publicly said as much (in fact, Lupa posted a public apology to one of the anons because she was expecting to get their story and somehow didn't, and she hoped that person didn't feel left out because of her screwup).

Basically, don't blame the site's producers, partners and former producers for doing tribute videos to Justin Carmical or Dr. Gonzo for wanting to do the same. They were as ignorant as the rest of us. If you want to blame CA itself for posting a tribute when they knew, that's your prerogative.

I respectfully and fundamentally disagree. "It's not my story to tell" because people want to "protect the victim" is a problem in of itself. It allows the situation to grow out of control and ultimately becomes bigger than that one victim. At some point the victim shares in the culpability if they chose not to speak up and raising the alarm. Those who also know share in the culpability as well. I can understand the fear, the shame, and the confusion of such a terrible situation, but I cannot respect the decision to remain quiet which allows the perpetrator to continue to victimize other people.
There is sentiment out in the YouTube verse that the poorly redacted response from Channel Awesome was done on purpose. Not necessarily to intimidate those who came forward, but in an attempt to shift all of the blame (from a CA's management perspective) to those who did contribute to the Not So Awesome document. In other words, "Do you think we are bad? Well, look at this!"

EDIT:

I have seen your other response. The only other producer, Iron Liz, is said to have known and Count Jackula certainly suspected.
There are two things about Justin Carmical at the moment.

1. That he was grooming a young fan. She was of legal age of consent from the information I have seen. There is no statutory rape issue here; although, many consider this behavior scummy as fuck. The "Jane Doe" described herself as "18 years old with a mind of a 16 year old."

2. That Justin Carmical is an alleged rapist and several people knew well beforehand of the Not So Awesome document; i.e., Liz Skochil (Iron Liz), Mike Machuad, The Walker Brothers, and Holly Brown. Maybe others, but I haven't seen other names associated yet. Count Jackula was the one who initially started looking into the incident because he ran into Justin at Magfest 2013 moments after the apparent rape.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_cont ... _h1LwTmc1k

There is so much information right now that it is hard to search through. Depending on the incident, blame and responsibility may be shifted toward one particular person or group, but I am of the opinion that no one is blameless in this shitfest.

I cannot edit anymore. :(

What I wanted to say in regards to your (Formless) response, is I fully believe the admin of CA is trying to throw the producers who penned the Not So Awesome document under the bus by raising suspicion of it's accuracy.

However, there are some producers who did know. To iterate, among Iron Liz, and the suspicions of Count Jackula, Jacob Chapman (JessOtaku) did know.

https://twitter.com/ANNJakeH/status/984551871367884800

Blame certainly falls on everyone, moreso than others, but none of these people are saints. As more information comes to light, I continually lose respect for the whole lot.

Aether, did you not read the Twitter posts where they said the victims specifically asked them to keep it confidential? And they did take action, by making sure JewWario was taken off the site so he couldn't prey on CA's fanbase. The victims just didn't want to make it any more public than that. Who the fuck are you to contradict the victims' wishes? The court system is fucking jacked and often does not do victims of sexual assault justice (in fact quite the opposite, it often makes things worse for them emotionally), and besides which, we have no idea what actions, legal or otherwise, they might have planned before Justin Carmical shot himself and rendered it a moot point. After that, the only consideration left was preventing GamerGate, Anonymous and JewWario's fanbase (hell, possibly even the site's management themselves) from harassing them. You don't understand the consequences of going public with this kind of shit. I say with all respect that is due to you that you should zip you fucking mouth shut, you self righteous wanker. :wanker: In reality, people like you only make it harder, not easier, for victims to confide in those who could help get them away from their abuser and out of harms way, which always always always takes precedent over everything else.

Also, legal age of consent doesn't make it consensual or non-abusive, and Allison Pregler has said that there are multiple victims here, not just one. One of them indicated she wasn't eighteen at the time, if you had bothered to read Not So Awesome all the way through. Another had a story which was supposed to make it into the document, but somehow didn't. The fact there are multiple victims shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone knowledgeable about sexual abusers of this kind.

Finally, at least one of the people you list, Jacob Chapman, probably has personal reasons as well that he probably kept silent-- he is transsexual and formerly went by the name Hope Chapman while he was on the site. According to him, he was also abused as a child by his own parents, who are fundamentalist Christians. His testimony in the document is extremely short, but implies that the abuse he was getting from site management was so severe that threatening to go public with it was the one and possibly only time a producer was able to turn the tables on Mike Michaud and the rest of management. So I'd make an educated guess that he kept it quiet not only because the victims asked him to, but for self preservation's sake as well. If you can't understand that, you are a moron, plain and simple. Black and white thinking like you display is non-empathetic, not actually rational, and very much the reason that "White Knight" is an insult among feminists.

Ghetto edit: never mind, she said she was eighteen, but was mentally closer to 16 by her testimony. That point had me confused. Still, my point stands that legal age of consent has nothing to do with it.
