It seems very appropriate that the changes to the status quo from Change aren't limited to in-universe changes.

Re: Korra Book 4 to debut on Oct. 3
Good news, though all the changes make me think Nick is trying to get the show out of the way and won't shell out for future seasons.

Re: Korra Book 4 to debut on Oct. 3
Given they ordered Books 3 and 4 back when 1 was airing, I'm not too shocked Book 4 is the last. It's getting a 52 episode run, so not much less than ATLA did. That's not a bad run for a show with such high quality animation.
The real worry is that this might be the end for Avatar as a franchise, at least for several years. Nick clearly doesn't know how to fit it into their standard programming. Alternatively, a spinoff might go back to an Aang-aged character out of belief that the teenage Korra wasn't young enough for children viewership. Or they may dump the entire thing because it's not enough like Spongebob and similar comedy cartoons.

Still haven't caught the end of Book 2. But wow they're really pushing these out at lightning pace.

There are two more optimistic possibilities:Steve wrote:The real worry is that this might be the end for Avatar as a franchise, at least for several years. - Nick decides that the fact that they can't fit it into their broadcast programming doesn't matter because the show has enough people who view it online. So any future series in the Avatar franchise is online only.
- Nick decides that they don't want to do anything more with it. So when someone comes along wanting to buy the rights, they sell them.
Can anyone think of any other TV series which went from being broadcast and available online to being online only ?

Korra is having Nam flashbacks I see.Steve wrote:http://www.nick.com/videos/clip/korra-215-clip.html
First clip is up for Book 4. Poor Korra....
Also this is a very no spoilery clip it looks like a one minute cut from episode 1 of the show. But then korra has been good about clipping out the parts not to show spoilers.

See, this is why IMHO western animation is crap compared to anime. Teenage hero of unspecified age is relatable to very wide range of viewers, even if it's borderline in some cases. Child hero? Not so much. This is for example why I greatly prefer Korra to Aang. And yet, what popular series recently not starring child hero you can name?Steve wrote:The real worry is that this might be the end for Avatar as a franchise, at least for several years. Wakfu is saved mostly by Yugo's party, MLP:FiM you can argue become so popular because the protagonists were more mature than earlier generations, but it's borderline and I think EG spin-off does better job. Teen Titans are too child-like IMHO, South Park despite being funny has no one you can really relate to unless you happened to have similar childhood.
I watched Batman: The Animated Series as a child and somehow Bruce being adult didn't made me stop enjoying it or being my favourite animated show. Does every western really animation need annoying kid or be forgettable comedic drivel to be accepted into production?

Well you can blame the Comics Code Authority for that as it caused comics and by extension cartoons to be viewed mostly as "for kids" in the US while Japan didn't have for the most part, it also allowed manga and anime that had mature storylines without needing to show it's "mature" unlike western stuff that for the most part had either kids stuff or ultra violent and/or borderline porn (if not outright porn), with some notable exceptions, until very recently.

I don't even try to guess at the logic of executives, since they mostly go by their own prejudices and how it colors focus groups and such.
Plus, well.... toys. Cartoons are for promoting toys, you know. And of the right demographics too. If the cartoon's toys don't sell sufficiently, then the show should be canned even if it's still profitable through ratings and advertisements. Thus the fates of Young Justice - which had too many girl viewers and everyone knows girls don't buy the same toys as boys do - and other such programs.
Although Korra is probably further influenced by the fact that it tends to be even more mature in content than ATLA, and Nickelodeon doesn't know how to handle it.

Spoiler
And why are we having spoilers when you can most likely guess what is going on from the trailer. That is if people guessed correctly what is going to happen from the trailer (ie Nick doesn't care that the information is available) it won't be a spoiler and if people guess wrong it won't matter anyway.

I get the feeling that Korra's new look and the arena scenes and such are going to be from her going walkabout, going into hiding, etc, as she tries to rebuild herself even as the world around her starts to burn.
We'll have to see, though.

Ninja Korra's scenes seem to mostly take place in the Spirit World. Perhaps she goes there to overcome her paralysis?
