Banning

Post by Darth Wong »

Hello, everyone. I just wanted to drop a line about the site policy on banning and thread deletion. As you know, I don't want to be a forum Nazi, banning anybody I don't like. I also have mixed feelings about deleting trollish threads, because a trollish thread stands as evidence of a troll's stupidity, and deleting it merely covers it up.

However, I also don't want to let trolls hijack the board, spam it to death, fill it with lies, etc. So I suggest that if someone believes another member is behaving in an unacceptable manner, then be democratic and start a poll on whether people think he should be banned. I'm reluctant to ban, but I also believe it's important to listen to the will of the people :)

Nova's suggestions for refinement of banning policy...

Post by Nova Andromeda »

--I like this idea, but it still seems like it could be exploited. I suggest we "elect" a banning council of perhaps 5 members. Darth Wong would start threads on people who he would consider banning and/or treads he would consider deleting. Anybody who cares could post to the tread for a specified period of time (the thread would have a poll too). After the time had elapsed the council would vote on whether to ban a person, delete a thread, or not.
--This method ensures noone can justify calling Darth Wong a forum Nazi and prevents tons of people coming to the forum from some creationist site (or where ever) just to vote to keep a troll and/or its post.

Mmm, message board Survivor. I like the concept of being able to vote trolls off the forum.

I think it be better to make moderators (perhaps elected?) and in a little private forum they'd decide what to do.

You want a SD.net department of Pre-Crime, then you can get into a translucent jumpsuit and chill in white fluid with two other guys. It's sure wonderful being a Pre-Cog!

Maybe there should be three elected officials...an obvious Star Trek supporter, good ol' Darth Wong (Star Wars supporter and owner of the message board), and an obviously neutral person. This way, all points of view are addressed, while not making big government out of a simple decision to ban someone from a message board. :)

Yeah, a fair amount of SW, ST and neutral mods or whatever is good.

Doesn't it depend on what Mr./Darth/Lord/Emperor Wong wants? lol I thought we were just making suggestions.

That's not such a good idea. Popular vote can get people who aren't qualified to do the job given the job and a private forum would also be a mistake and is unneccessary. Private messaging could do the job of discussing a controversial decision without the public getting involved unless you want them to be and doesn't foster any resentment because anybody can pm anybody while only mods and a select few could access a private forum and that might not sit well with many people.

And yeah everything here is just suggestion, in the end the Dark Lord has the final say and anybody who contests that might be given an unpleasent first hand demonstration of "power of the force er adminship."

Shouldn't it be "power of the dark side er adminship." ?
