ipod touch updating

Post by Steel »

I have an iPod touch lying around from years ago and I was wondering if it was worth getting all the updates so that it is capable of playing app store games. This is (perhaps exclusively) for king of dragon pass, which looks pretty interesting, but doesn't look likely to come out on android any time soon.

I think the iPod touch is from about 2007. The last time I regularly used it I got a message saying that there was an exciting new app store coming out, just pay £5 for the update! At which point I said fuck that and haven't bothered with it since. How many generations of pay for software updates are here between then and now?

So firstly, is it even possible to get current things working on an iPod that old, and secondly is it worth the cost?

If you're going to use it, upgrade to the latest version. However, first-generation ones won't be able to use iOS 4 or higher.

To use it at all I'd need to upgrade to the latest stuff. What I'm looking for is what would that cost, and if I have an iPod touch from 2007 is it capable of upgrading that far?

If it costs more than about £20 I'll just not bother and buy or borrow an iPad.

Plug the thing in and see what the latest update is. Also, the cost should be pretty cheap and one-time.

Anus. Looks like its a first gen from the guide on the apple website. I won't bother digging it out if it can't be upgraded enough.

Highest for 1st gen is 3.1.3, if memory serves, but unless you feel like paying Apple for a fucking software update, you'll have to obtain the update file from other sources and push the update manually with iTunes. It's fucking stupid that even though they discontinued charging for software updates from the 2nd gen onward, you still have to pay to update the 1st gen.

IIRC, it has to do with accounting reasons (Apple changed them for later models). There's only one charge, fortunately.

The battery on an iPod from 2007 is nearing the end of its life anyway. I wouldn't spend any money on it unless you're also planning on fixing that.

Since when did Apple charge for updating software on iOS?

Updates on the first-generation iPod Touch had a one-time charge.

And even back then this was only for the iPod Touch, not for the iPhone.
