Did you get to the part where the 'heroes' have Draco Malfoy turned into a girl and forced through a magical contract to be a brood mare for Crabbe and Goyle yet?

Yes, I've read that. He said in an early chapter that morality is like a bank. If you have more evil withdrawals then you do good deposits, then the deposits you've made don't stop you from being a bad person. It seems the irony is lost on him.

As much as he seems to despise the magical government where power is concentrated all in the hands of Dumbledore, doing the same with Harry Potter is perfectly alright.

He's been using magic to solve so many problems, I just want to see this cast plopped into Discworld and see it bite them in the ass.

Did I just read that? To end the Cold War, she nukes MOSCOW? How does that end the war, and wouldn't that just cause all the Russians nuclear weapons to be fired in retaliation? Talk about jumping over the Moral Event Horizon
With Sky-Perfect Saber-Heart, such an event can in all seriousness be referred to as 'Tuesday'.

And he claimed that having an abusive family doesn't exonerate you from future wrongdoings, but Snape never dumped a nuke on a city of millions. I wish he would have answered the reviews for chapter 72. He earlier claimed the group's fairy nature introduced an element of randomness that screwed up modern technology, but they can still use nukes just fine.

Well, that's no problem. Obviously their randomness randomly created random conditions that allowed the nukes to work.

I lost interest around when Trelawney started time-traveling to take over NASA, but it wasn't until that chapter that ended with Dumbledore getting resurrected in 6 or so different places at once that I stopped reading.

Really? Huh. I need to pay more attention, then, because I'm in that group and I totally missed that.

Anyway, to recommend another fic, I happen to like SixTwoSixFour's Armed Resistance. It's a Code Geass rewrite where Nunally didn't survive the invasion of Japan and with some alterations to the nature of Geass. Lelouch's still does the same thing, but the background behind the Codes is different, I believe.

How does it compare to the anime proper? I hated the cartoon mainly because the cast wasn't there for any real purpose, but I thought the setting had some potential.

I think it compares fairly well. There aren't any characters that really jump out at me as superfluous. The fics starts out mostly following the major canon events, but post-Narita the divergences start growing.

Completed. A crossover of SG1 and X-Com, an entertaining read written pretty well even though X-Com does seem to overwhelm the SGC in some parts.

Its sequel,

More of a SGA-XCom crossover.

Simple crack: Thinking in Little Green Boxes. It's a Harry Potter/Marvel crossover, in which a simple mistake brings Harry to be raised by Deadpool.

One really good FF.net Harry Potter story is this AU in which Harry is adopted by Leroy Jethro Gibbs:
Potter and Gibbs

34 chapters - it skips around some, but it is fascinating to see how things change as a result of that.

If it isn't the best fanwork I've ever read, it still makes it into the top five with no problems.

Hey HioH - if you liked Thousand Shinji and The Open Door (and really, who doesn't), it may interest you to know that the author is right here on this board - Academia Nut has written those and many others that are posted in this forum. In fact, right on the front page is is latest work - New Blood, a Cthulhutech\Hellsing\Prototype crossover that just reeks of awesome in typical AN style.

Thousand Shinj and The Open Door are decent enough, but they do tend to come off as a)overstating 40k, b)suffer from Invincible Protagonist Syndrome.

I kind of think that was the point of both stories. Especially given the ending of Thousand Shinji.

And 40K overstates 40K. It's a universe where fucking chainsaw swords are considered viable weapons, and there's an entire race with enough confidence that their combined psychic power makes the laws of physics just let them do whatever they want, like flying un-fueled fighters or making the color of a vehicle determine its speed. Over-the-top is what 40K is all about.

The trouble starts when you combine 40k with another universe, and expect them to beat.. well, anything.

I consider 40k armies to be roughly on par with current-day ones. More hitting power, less accuracy and range. Larger armies too, which is why they'd curbstomp Earth quite nicely.. though is it really curbstomping, when both sides take similar amounts of damage?

Against any similar SF universe?

Um. Yeah, no.

You should perhaps review the calculations that have been done regarding the capabilities of 40k weaponry. The trappings of 40K are archaic, but the actual capabilities of things like meltas and nova cannons and so forth are most certainly beyond current day armies. They don't just use chainsaw swords, after all - they use chainsaw swords that can rip through main battle-tank armor. 40K is widely considered to be roughly on par with Star Wars in raw weapon and armor strength, though certainly not in FTL speed. "Curbstomp" would be an understatement.

Several threads on the topic are in the Science Fiction section.

You clearly are only casually aware of the 40k mythos. That's fine, there's no shame in that but you're so wrong on this one its actually a bit comical.

A lot of 40k is esthetically similar to items from history, GW started as a historical miniatures company after all, and a lot of their visual elements draw inspiration from modern warfare and famous historical war-machines. There appearance aside they function on par-or above par with most SciFi fandoms.

Sure Guardsman Redshirt Target-head is going to be just as squishy to bullets and whatnot as the average modern day foot-solder but he'll be backed up by any number of bizarre and improbable war machines and whanot. For every example of "grimdark" that there is in 40k there are examples of absurdly overblown powers and items.

The clearest example of this in my mind are the Jokaero. 40k has a playable race of cyborg savant orangutans who are capable of producing weapons powerful enough to destroy a large war machine but small enough to fit on your finger. There are so many examples of this sort of "wait it does what?" technology and powers that it boggles the mind.

For the Empire his includes (but is not limited to): Laser rifles that can be recharged by putting the power cells close to fire, cybernetic replacements for virtually any limb, life support systems capable of sustaining the consciousness of anyone indefinitely even after their body dies, immortality drugs, mass cloning technology, teleporters, anti-gravity technology, the ability to turn corpses into functioning cyborg workers, etc....

And none of that even touches on the absurd psychic abilities present in virtually all races except the TAU and Necrons that can range in form and function anywhere from "move a penny across a table" to "total global holocaust because I'm pissed the fuck off." The magics employed by the Empire have been used to do things as absurd as hide planets in alternate dimensions to allow armies of sorcerer space marines to learn the proper way to combat Deamons in privacy.

Hell the Emperor blew up ten star systems with his mind because he was pissed off... and that was after he was kept in a state of near comatose schizophrenia on the Golden Throne. The systems damaged by the "Storm of the Emperor's Wrath" are still engulfed in warp-fire some five thousand years after the fact.

So "On par or below par with current military forces" is a bit optimistic.

It still doesn't make the protagonists likable, and ruins what should be a very good story. 40k is generally capable of taking down equivalent forces from other universes, especially with their advantages, but there still seemed to be author favoritism. Why not throw a more balanced enemy at them, have them suffer genuine setbacks, or even make the C'tan seem to be a genuine threat, seeing as it's their justification for being assholes to the multiverse and getting away with it?

Simple. At that time point in the Open Door they have only 2 planets/solar systems (Bloodhaven in SG-1 and thier version of Earth) under thier control, and as such simply cannot afford the losses of fighting an equal or stronger foe.
You know, its remarkably easy to feed an undead army if all you have are just enemies....

That doesn't meant they can't take losses or have on-screen setbacks. A colony of dead babies doesn't count. If they can build something like the Killfrenzy, they can lose ships without being crippled. As it is, what started off as a great story started to drag because there's no tension? Boarding party? Our Alleged Heroes carve through them without breaking a sweat or taking any losses. Never mind the fact that canon 40k would take at least a few casualties in that situation.

Come on, that's what ships have redshirts for! To take casualties and add to the drama.
