Roll To Dodge: Space Whaler Escape!

Post by CSJM »

Greetings, and welcome to Roll to Dodge.

This campaign will be called "Space Whaler Escape", and will proceed with the extended RTD rules, which are as follows:
Spoiler
Each player posts the actions he will attempt during each turn of the game, a turn being somewhere between a second and a minute depending on circumstances and rolls. Time is an illusion in RtD.
Some actions (picking up a readily available item, taking out a weapon in normal circumstances, speaking, etc) can be declared free by the GM, succeeding without a roll, but most major actions will require a roll of a D6, and their success is gauged on this scale:

[1]: Epic Failure. The action failed and horribly backfired on the user.
[2]: Failure. The action failed.
[3]: Unfailure. The action didn't succeed all the way through.
[4]: Success. The action succeeded, just barely.
[5]: Epic Success. The action succeeded, in the most improbable way.
[6]: Overshot. The action succeeded, but backfired horribly on the user and anyone around.

Any bonuses or penalties the player has will be added to the roll. Having a total score above 6 or below 1 yields no special results.

Dodge and Damage
Whenever, due to any event, something threatens a player (or another participant of the game, i.e. a destroyable part of the surroundings), two rolls may be made. First comes the roll to Dodge from which the game gets its name. A D6 is rolled, and the result is treated on this scale:

[1]: The threat was not avoided, and the player did everything possible to magnify it.
[2]: The threat was not avoided.
[3]: The threat was partially avoided.
[4]: The threat was just barely avoided.
[5]: The threat was completely avoided.
[6]: The threat was avoided, but the player also magnified it and created an additional threat.

Any bonuses or penalties to dodge are added to the roll for the dodging player or object, and any bonus or penalty to hit of the attacker (if there is one) is subtracted from this roll. A [6] roll prompts another dodge roll, to counter the new threat, ad infinitum until a non-[6] roll is made.

If the result of a dodge roll is insufficient - exactly what is insufficient depends a lot on the circumstances and the attack roll - a roll for damage is made, using the same D6, and the result is once again determined by the scale:

[1]: Damage was suffered in excess of what the threat was capable of doing by itself.
[2]: The threat dealt its maximum possible damage for the circumstances.
[3]: The threat dealt moderate damage for the circumstances.
[4]: The threat dealt minimal damage for the circumstances.
[5]: The threat dealt no damage regardless of circumstances.
[6]: The threat dealt minimal damage to its intended target, but something else suffered instead (usually it's armor that suffers).

Any armor bonuses that match the attack type are added to the roll, and the attack's bonuses are subtracted from it.

Health and Injury
Whenever damage is dealt to a character, the GM decides, per the circumstances, what damage is dealt to what parts of the character's body. Damage comes in several varieties, which are fairly straightforward. Penetrating wounds cause bleeding, which, if intensive enough, may cause death at the end of any turn. Broken bones prevent the usage of limbs and may cause internal damage and bleeding. Damage to the brain can be instantly lethal. Lost or disabled hands will prevent the use of items, one lost leg will incur a -1 penalty to movement, both lost legs will incur a -2 penalty. Other than these effects, the wounds have no quantifiable effect on the character.

Sidenote: why doesn't this forum collapse spoilers?
Now that the system is explained in detail, we can start.

============================

Turn 0

The "SUS Inhibitable", "the rustbucket", the "Protsvetanie" class Space Whaler. A rather large, and at the same time incredibly cramped ship. For the last eight months, it's been the home of its ten crewmembers, and an incredibly large rat that snuck on board back on the tradestation at Deneb Kaitos. Things were going rather well since then, the cargo holds were nearly full, packed with all kinds of processed meats. The various horrors of interstellar space, referred to as "space whales", made surprisingly good sushi, and were massively hunted since their discovery. This last one, however, proved to be tough. It managed to smash the ship's entire arsenal of weapons (one dorsal laser-tipped harpoon turret) and sensors and broke free, leaving the ship nearly blind in interstellar space. The captain and his three officers did a great job of getting the ship where it is now, on the orbit of an unidentified blue giant star. And then, it happened. Without sensors, nobody could really see it coming - a large asteroid, smashing straight into the ship's midsection. Tucked safely away behind the thickest armor in the center of the ship, the bridge, along with the captain, the first officer, the chief engineer and the navigator, was instantly vaporized. The enormous gap in the structure has cut off the engineering deck and the cargo hold from the rest of the crew, who were left without control, on an accelerating ship, quickly careening towards a massive gas giant. With all escape pods lost (they, too, were located in the midsection - a great flash of brilliance on the designers' part), the crew seems doomed... until they remembered.
Back at Deneb Kaitos, the captain blew half of his profit on a new purchase. The Captain's Pod. Situated in a tube in the ship's nose, this brilliant needle of a pod was a state-of-the-art design. It could only house a single person, but its engines were advanced enough to take it anywhere within ten parsecs in a single burst. It's the last glimmer of hope for the six remaining crewmembers... and each of them will do anything to reach it first. Anything.

------------------------

The ship's fore section consists of four levels, each shaped like a disc. Several elevators connect the levels, which share a similar layout - a large "hub" in the center, surrounded by rooms and corridors. As long as the engines provide thrust, the ship has gravity, directed along the ship's axis. The gravity is currently around 0.6G.

The captain's pod in on the first, foremost level. You are all on the fourth level, closest to the wrecked midsection.

Tyler Wilks is in the lavatory, fourth level.
James Khan is in the Medibay, fourth level.
Matt Frehley is in the Lounge, fourth level.
Unit 4 is in his quarters, fourth level.
Jack Ross is in the Dorsal Observatory, fourth level.
Der Hummelsaft is in the Ventral Observatory, fourth level.

You all know the ship through and through of course, but you're under stress at the moment, and will have to make an effort to correctly recall what is where on the ship.

And now, it starts. Post your actions for turn 1! Doesn't have to be a single action, but something you can pull off within a minute at most.

The impact literally knocked the shit right out of him so Tyler finishes up and disconnects the hose from his armored space suit. That done he shoulders his rifle and starts to carefully exit the washroom. If his hunch is correct he, along with any other survivors will be going for the Captain's escape pod and he aims to be the one leaving on it. However, being the first there would be stupid, that is unless he could arrive so much before the others that he wouldn't simply be removed from his only escape from certain death.

With that in mind he starts to head to the lift, with any luck he can get to it early and disable it before anybody else can use it.

Matt gets up after being tossed about the lounge from the impact, but his armor protected him from any injuries. He checks his weapon to make sure it is working, packs his equipment, and rushes to go to the lift. He knows all of the crew will be attempting to do the same, so he hurries.

On the way there, he attempts use his omni-tool to hack into the ships system and shut down the elevator until he gets here.

Unit 4 thought to himself. Most people would be rushing to the elevator- but he was the one with explosives. If he could just blow a hole in the floor, he could get down to the third level before anybody else got a chance.

Making the well known reference to Julius Ceasar, he made the attempt...

James picked himself off of a medical examination table as things started to right themselves after the impact, realising that everyone was liable to start rushing to the escape pod rigth away James decided to wait in the Medbay for a bit longer, searching the storage cubords for some medicinal alcohol as well as anything nice and flamable.

Jack Ross had a nice view of the stars through the observatory viewport as the ship tumbled through space. He was seeing a number of different stars right in front of his face as the impact knocked him to the floor. As his vision cleared, he could see that a very large gas giant was now careening toward the ship.......wait, that wasn't right. The ship was careening toward the very large gas giant.

That makes more sense.

Jack figured that everyone was going to be heading toward the escape pod. It was the only sensible thing to do. And for someone as sociopathic as himself, it was only right for him to join in the fight.

So Jack made sure his P45 handgun was loaded, donned his targeting glasses, and set off for the elevator.

Rocked by the force of the impact, Der Hummelsaft quickly surveyed what damage he could see from the observatory. Deciding it was past bad and well into "Oh Shit," he loads his TRXX-1 Blaster Pistol and thinks over his options. He could stay where he is, dying horribly from decompression or crashing into the planet below. Or, he could run like the winds of space and make it to the Captain's pod before anyone else could.

Of course, everyone would be going for the elevators. That was too obvious. Besides which, he wouldn't want to be stuck in a small space with that robot, or any of the other unsavory characters aboard the dying ship. Gathering his wits, and ammo, Der Hummelsaft promptly ran in search of a maintenance shaft leading down to a lower deck.

Some interesting decisions made by the crewmembers. I guess getting hit by a large chunk of rock and ice can really mess up your spatial senses.

With that in mind he starts to head to the lift, with any luck he can get to it early and disable it before anybody else can use it.
Search for the elevator:[6] Disable elevator:[3]

Running along the narrow corridors as fast as his suit would allow, Tyler follows his instincts to the elevator at the end of the main portside corridor. As the slightly rusty steel doors close in front of him, he catches a glimpse of Jack Ross turning a corner, madly dashing for the same elevator. He holds the door with his hand just long enough to wave Jack good-bye, leaving him alone in front of the elevator.

After a surprisingly rough descent, Tyler quickly steps out and smashes his fist into the cabin's control panel, which immediately cuts the elevator's power. Thinking it may not be enough, he aims his rifle at the cabin... and suddenly realises something is wrong.

The area he's in is unpowered, debris litter the floor, and his suit's HUD shows reduced atmospheric pressure. The third level shouldn't be damaged, not this much at least. A quick glance at the nearest wall marker confirms his suspicions - he took the wrong elevator! Standing on the first level of the wrecked midsection, Tyler realises he put himself even further away from his goal.

On the way there, he attempts use his omni-tool to hack into the ships system and shut down the elevator until he gets here.
Find elevator:[6] Hack elevator systems:[6]

Dashing into the hub area at breakneck speed, Matt deftly punches shutdown commands into his multitool. "Come on, come on, work, dammit!" He crashes into Unit 4 on his way, knocking the robot over, but doesn't pause for even a second. He doesn't pause even when a powerful explosion rocks the floor under his feet. The multitool finally gives off a happy "program complete" beep just as Matt runs into the hub. Finally, the main lift to level 3 is in sight! Excited, Matt runs up the the wide metal tube and slams his hand into the "call elevator" panel. Nothing happens. "What!? No, no, no!" He frantically pushes the touch-sensitive panel again and again, achieving nothing. The elevator is dead. Matt nearly panics, wildly looking around for other options, before finally looking at his multitool again. The flashing "Program Complete" sign takes some time to find a proper connection in Matt's brain. "Aw, DAMMIT!"
Carinthium wrote:Unit 4 thought to himself. Most people would be rushing to the elevator- but he was the one with explosives. If he could just blow a hole in the floor, he could get down to the third level before anybody else got a chance.

Set explosives:[4] Take cover:[1] Damage vs. Explosion:[4+1-2] Level integrity:[3]

Rolling out of his quarters, Unit 4 quickly analyzed the situation and decided on a most direct course of action. Setting a demolition charge on the floor, he activated its ten-second timer and made haste to the nearest corner, when suddenly...

"Outta my way!"

Matt Frehley, speeding through the corridor on an unknown, but likely survival-related errand, neatly body-tackled Unit 4 to the floor. The fall was not enough to cause damage to his steel plating. The charge he set, on the other hand...

"Oh, this is so going to excite.." Unit 4 was interrupted by a powerful blast, which threw him against the far wall of the corridor and punched a large hole through the floor of the fourth level. The smoke and dust from the explosion is quickly sucked away into the hole as the air rushed in to equalize the pressure between the now-connected sections. Unit 4, now rather charred, dented and missing an arm, still found strength in him to stand up. "uh... my pain circuits.."

Search cupboards:[3]

Luckily for James, the medical storages were closed, and none of the stored items were damaged during the impact. Opening every one in turn, James found a lot of usable medicines. Too many to carry, in fact. He pocketed a half-liter vial of ethanol and spent some time searching for a suitable container to carry everything. But when he finally did find an empty bag, a powerful explosion occured right on the other side of the medibay's wall. The inch-thick spaceship-grade steel held the blow, but the wall buckled ever so slightly. Just enough to make every wall-mounted cabinet detach from its mount and come crashing down onto the open storages below, crushing everything and setting off a violent chemical reaction that quickly consumed all the medicines unlucky enough to be spilled. When the horribly bubbling mixture began eating through the leg of the bench he sat on, James decided it was probably time to leave.

Find elevator:[3]

Confused after a sudden head-on encounter with the floor, Jack lost his sense of direction within the ship. Taking turns almost at random, he nevertheless manages to find an elevator. As he runs for it, he sees Tyler Wilks, waving his hand at him from within. "Wait! Tyler, you bastard, don't leave me here!" His words are unheard by Tyler as he bangs his fists on the closed elevator doors. Standing at the elevator for a few seconds, he suddenly sees something that makes him laugh - the half-faded sign on the top of the tube clearly reads "To Engineering, First Level."

"Ha! Bastard took the wrong lift. Now, let's see if I can find the right one."

Find maintenance shaft:[5+1]

It did not take Der Hummelsaft long to find a maintenance entrance. Being a rather old ship, the Inhibitable was repaired rather frequently, and the maintenance shafts saw quite a lot of use. Diving into the first bright-orange hatch he could see, Der made his way along the cramped tube until he reached a fork. One branch went up, another went down. Quickly sketching up the ship's layout in his head, Der chose the lower route. As it turned out, wrongly. A powerful explosion shook the level as he stepped onto the lower ladder, making the whole section he was standing on break off and fall. Avoiding injuries by sheer luck, Der Hummelsaft jumped off from the wedged up section of ladder, and landed on the floor in a very dimly lit area. It was hard to see anything, but when he turned around he could clearly see the face of Tyler Wilks, lit up by the LEDs inside his armor suit. Sensing a slight disparity in firepower, Der desperately searched for somewhere to take cover. Then he suddenly realised where he was.

"Wait, did we both just pick the wrong way to go?"

I should point out that with the ship accelerating forward and the Pod being located at the nose, you really should've been trying to go up, not down. Just what made you think you had to go down, anyway? :?

Unit 4, observing "his" new situation, decided to switch plans (also, he looked at a map and came to his senses about which way to go). Grabbing what explosives he could, he headed at top speed to the elevator.

Cursing under his breath he knew he should have looked before he dove into an elevator. Lucky for him he can climb back up the tube and try to make it to the upper decks, and in the lesser gravity he can climb fairly swiftly, though not as well as he would do in even lesser gravity. However before he does that he has some competition down here with him, something that wasn't likely caught in that explosion above.

Cocking his rifle he fires a quick burst at his fellow crew member while saying, "No hard feelings Hummelsaft, just trying to survive!"

Swearing profusely the entire time, Matt stops to think about what maintenance shafts or emergency staircases lead to level 3.

Matt also realizes that he saw that damn robot Unit 4, and waits around the corner of the door he had come through to ambush Unit 4. He takes cover behind a box. He also keeps an eye out for anyone else in the area, muttering under his breath, "Why in Thor's name did I sign on for this mission? Goddamn space whales..."

Deciding that now was indeed a good time to get the hell out of the medbay, and indeed off the entire ship before someone wound up blowing it to peices or worse, James slid open the Medbay door, advancing cuatiously to find some kind of stairs up towards the captians pod, after all with the ship damaged there was no guarentee the elevatos would work.

And so he advanced through he corridors looking for the stairs up, lasgun raised and ready to shoot, just in case.

Ducking away from the gunfire behind the nearest cover, Hummelsaft fires off a few blind shots at his attacker, screeching, "Did I ever tell you how much I hated you Wilks!?"

Looking around, he bit his lip trying to remember the fastest way to get back on track towards the Captain's Pod.

Damn, this forum is so inconvenient. I can't see when someone's online, can't see his/her post times, can't even get proper posting statistics. But anyway, judging by chitoryu's last post time, he momentarily forgot about this thread's existance. Shall we wait for him to get the turn out proper, or should I let the merciless RNG choose a course of action for him to get the turn out faster?

And speaking of his/her, I can see most names here are masculine, except Unit 4. Carinthium, is your character an android or a gynoid?
edit: although scratch that, I can see you refer to Unit 4 as a "he", so android it is.

You can see the post time above the post, and you can see when they were last online in their profile page. You should have chitoryu just stand there and do nothing for the next round.

Yes, I can see when he was last online, but what I'd like is a statistic of his post times. Like we get on Bay12. Allows to see whether it's viable to wait for someone to post or if he's gone to sleep already.

And doing nothing is rather unfair, I think. Even a bad AI action will get at least something done for him.

Roll a dice to decide what he does? Seems fitting.

Mmkay then, I'll be rolling a D6 in the same way I do (did) in my main game. As before, a table for everything, but it's rather straightforward:

[1] - Colloquially known as "baaad idea", an action genuinely counterproductive for everyone involved, especially the player.
[2] - Same as above, but counterproductive only for the player.
[3] - Mill around, doing minor tasks of no real (or immediate) importance.
[4] - Do something useful, or smart, or both.
[5] - Tap into the universe for knowledge and try an action that's most likely to turn out good.
[6] - Bypass the limiter and try to do good on a massive scale, with reckless disregard for personal safety and common sense.

So, Jack Ross will... [3] swear profusely and try to find some tools for overcoming sheer physical obstacles like closed doors.

I'll have the turn up soonish.

Turn 2!

Carinthium wrote:Unit 4, observing "his" new situation, decided to switch plans (also, he looked at a map and came to his senses about which way to go). Grabbing what explosives he could, he headed at top speed to the elevator (+ later addition), intent on blowing any opposition he encounters into tiny bloody pieces.
Find map:[2], Find elevator:[4], Throw explosives:[1], Take cover:[4], Matt dodges:[4+1], Level integrity:[5]

Unit 4 cautiously rolls along the corridor, looking around, half-hoping to find a map of the area somewhere. No such luck, of course. Thankfully, he manages to come out to the hub area without the need of a map, but what's this? An inconspicuous box right in the middle of the room? Unit 4 carefully circles around the oddity, trying to make sense of it. Finally, he decides that this trash has nothing to do here anyway. Might even make a good trap while he makes his escape. "Here, little boxie! Unit 4 shall make you into a nice boombox, hehehe!"

He made the mistake of activating the timer before setting the explosive down. Twenty seconds began ticking away on the demolition charge in his hand as Matt Frehley came bursting out of his inconspicuous hiding place and discharged his Ravager right into Unit 4's torso. A dozen of Fury .500 uranium-core armor-piercing slugs worked as advertised, tearing a pineapple-sized hole through three centimeters of armor and two feet of vital electronic components. Paralyzed by shock and hardware failure, Unit 4's body was thrown back several feet, the armed demolition charge still ticking away its seconds. Through a thickening haze of noise, Unit 4's optical sensors could see Matt Frehley's eyes suddenly widen in horror, his body turning around as if in slow motion, turning to run from a threat he so suddenly realised. As the emergency batteries began dying and all senses failed him, Unit 4's personality programming threw out a quick list of possible last words that could still be pronounced with the remaining energy. Putting everything he had into his voice processor, Unit 4 screamed at his killer, trailing to laughter before the exploding charge cut off his voice forever.

"RUN, MATTHEW BOY! RUN!!! HAAA-HA-Ha-ha-ha.."
Norade wrote:Cursing under his breath he knew he should have looked before he dove into an elevator.

Attack Hummelsaft:[2]

Coldly lifting his rifle, Tyler follows Hummelsaft's figure with its muzzle as he desperately tries to find cover. Aiming straight for his fellow crewmember's head, he pulls the trigger. "No hard feelings, Hummelsaft, just trying to survive!" *click* "Whuh? DAMN these safety things!" Flipping the little lever on the rifle's side back into "Full Auto", Tyler scans the space in front of him for traces of Der Hummelsaft, but he's nowhere to be seen.

"Where'd you hide, Hummelsaft? Come out and fight, you sneaky coward! Only one of us is leaving this place, and it's going to be me!!"
The Vortex Empire wrote:Swearing profusely the entire time, Matt stops to think about what maintenance shafts or emergency staircases lead to level 3.

Find other means to get to L3:[4], Ambush Unit 4:[6], Unit 4 dodge:[2], Damage:[2+1-1-1]

Desperately running the plans of the ship through his head, Matt suddenly remembers a set of emergency stairs that connects levels 4 and 3, located in diagonal branches of the level's side corridors. The knowledge securing him in his hope for survival, he attempts a daring plan to rid himself of dangerous opposition. Quickly finding a large cardboard box among the various trash littering the floor of the hub - he remembered it was from the new refrigerator in the lounge, another purchase from the last haul - he hid himself in it, standing amidst the room in the most inconspicuous way he could think of. His ploy did not go in vain - the robot, Unit 4, already banged up from his explosive experiments, rolled into the hub and started taking interest in the box. Waiting until just the right moment, Matt tore his hiding place apart and tore into Unit 4 with his assault rifle. The poor robot never stood a chance, its body collapsed helplessy to the floor, a gaping hole torn through his chest. And he dropped something, too, something... ticking.

The next few seconds did not register properly in Matt's memory. Eyes wide with fear for his life, blood adrenaline levels rivalling those of alcohol a few minutes prior, he ran like the wind until he cleared a corner of one of the side corridors leading out of the hub. A great explosion, not unlike the previous one, rocked the level and messed up Matt's hair with its shockwave. This time, with a lot of space to expand into, the blast did not do significant damage to the level. Probably not so for Unit 4, Matt thought. Checking the corridor number on the wall, he realised that the staircase he remembered should be nearby. He took another look at the smoke-filled Hub area, and somewhat fondly remembered the tricks he and the crew used to play on the witless robot.

"Rust in pieces, matey."

And so he advanced through he corridors looking for the stairs up, lasgun raised and ready to shoot, just in case.
Find stairs:[5]

Carefully activating the door's motion sensor with his leg, James leaps off the bench just as its leg fails completely and it drops into the bubbling sea of chemical destruction. The door proves none too cooperative, attempting to close while James was only half through it, but he makes it in one piece and looks around, searching for directions. Finding a wall marker of particular interest, James follows it until it leads him into a dead end, with a massive mirror wall and a tiny metal hammer suspended right next to it. Across the mirror, in bright red letters, a sign reads "In case of fire or similar emergency, break glass." Wondering how the hell did the mirror even survive the initial impact, James takes the tiny hammer and cautiously taps on the reflective surface.

*tink*...*CRACKRUNKLECRRRASSSH*

Making an unholy hell of a noise, the great mirror crumbles into a pile of tiny cut-safe fragments, revealing a rather elaborate metal staircase leading upward. Seeing no reason to stay, James ascends the stairs, noting to himself - "This'll probably cost a whole century of bad luck.."

Find cover:[3], Attack Tyler:[1], Find route:[1]

Seeing Tyler Wilks raise his rifle, Der Hummelsaft takes immediate action. Cartwheeling sideways, he ducks behind a block of damaged engineering equipment, half-expecting to be riddled by bullets in the process. But either Wilks is being too playful or he's being too lucky, because no bullets come his way. Taking the opportunity, Der yells at Tyler - "Did I ever tell you how much I hated you, Wilks!? - before slinging out his trusty blaster and... wait, where is it? Der hastily checks his belt and the floor nearby - the blaster is nowhere to be found. Carefully peeking from his cover, he finally manages to see it - right between him and the advancing figure of Tyler Wilks, his spacesuit's peripheral lights making him appear out of this world in this darkness.

"Damn. Time for Plan B. At least I won't miss, the damn bugger's lit up like a freakin' christmas tree."

Whee, first death! Sorry, Carinthium. Bad rolls are bad rolls. Technically it was the rifle shot that killed you, but getting hoist by your own petard, literally, was more dramatically appropriate.

Nothing personal, Carinthium.

After uttering his little eulogy for the tin can, Matt heads to the emergency stairs he had remembered, hoping to begin his climb towards escape without running into more trouble. On the way there, he attempts to remember any passages from the 3rd floor to the 2nd and from the 2nd to the 1st that aren't located in the hub.

Tyler goes to pick up the pistol to ensure his foe ends up at least somewhat less armed than before. All the while he tries to find out where his crew mate may have gotten off to.

Technically, my P.M said I would try to intimidate them into letting me kill them- not that I would attempt to blow them up. You didn't say realism was a factor in what could be done, after all...

That's what you meant? Oh well. With the rolls as they were, it didn't really matter, all that changed was you getting blown up rather then simply shot to death. So let's just say I let you go out with a BANG, heheh. :)

Aand seriously, this is why I want all actions to be posted here. Sure, it kills some of the possible sneaky tactics, but it allows to monitor this kind of stuff. Creates less confusion. With automatic rolls to dodge anything, a sneak attack is no more powerful than a non-sneak attack, anyway.

James peered up at the stairs, carfullys tebbing over the broken glass, "Sheesh, who designed this ship anyway".

Keeping his lasgun at the ready for shooting anything that moved, he began to ascend the stairs, hoping that these lead all the way up to the deck with the captians pod on.
