Christopher Nolan's Inception

Post by JLTucker »

So, the director of The Dark Knight has a new film coming out in July, titled Inception. Here is the official synopsis:
Dom Cobb (DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption.

One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime.
Here is one trailer and here is the newest one.

I personally am going to see it because I like Nolan's other films more than his Batman movies. What do you think?

Already been a couple of threads on this, but I'm really interested in it. DiCaprio and Nolan seems like a winning pairing too.

The music in that new trailer tells me Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard are Nolan's new favourite composers. Pity, I did like David Julyan's work too. I love the dreamscapes bringing about a very interesting way of conduction industrial espionage.

The trailer looks intriguing, though for a bit after the first one my friends were banking on it being about reality-warpers; even so, I'll probably give this a look.
My money now is on this movie being "Shutter Island, Part 2".

Like AV, I am a Nolan/Boyle fanboy, so I'll definitely go watch it. That shot of the city rolling over itself is amazing.

What's strange is that they didn't compose the music in the second trailer. It was composed by a guy named Zack Hemsey. You can listen to it here.

Let's hope Inception is better.

It looks like it'll be worth a watch, it could fail but the actors should be a redeeming feature at any rate.

Or Nolan just really likes looking at people from behind surrounded by large buildings.

Then again, I believe that the Watchmen had posters like this too with Rorshach. Common WB style I suppose.

I just watched Following, Nolan's first feature film, and you can readily see his style in the writing and directing there. Need to rewatch Insomnia though, I never liked it as much as his other works and it was a remake essentially.

Thanks for the update! I suppose I'll give this a look-see, though Toy Story and Despicable Me are probably higher on my to-see list.

Seemingly this is the film of the year, though I expect TS3 will be up there too. I'm glad it's on IMAX as well, gives me an excuse to go to a late showing on the opening weekend and spend all day and night in London as I did with my brother when TDK came out. I loved the atmosphere.

Batman Begins was a huge improvement over Joel Schumacher's dayglo crimes against humanity, The Dark Knight was a solid sequel but Christ did it have such an overblown reputation (enchanced by Ledger's sudden, tragic death) and it had odd pacing, and personally I think Nolan's best movie is The Prestige. Inception looks really weird with entire cities getting rolled up like giant carpets, the Hell?!

I wasn't very impressed at first, but really, TDK has stood up extremely well against repeat viewings, and I like it much more now than I did when I watched it in the cinemas. My biggest beef is that the movie just seems to drag. It almost feels like two movies squished into a single runtime because so much goes on.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

This is the only movie at this point that I'm really planning to see this summer, other than maybe Predators if its out that soon.

That said, I liked the Nolan Batman films, did not like The Prestige, and haven't seen any of his other films.

To be fair, I'd be impossible, if not impressive to do worse. That said, I always preferred Batman Begins over TDK as well.

About Inception, it's Nolan and DiCaprio. I'm expecting it to be pretty damn good with such great talents combined.

Oh come on. You're attributing one of the biggest box office hits, with universal critical acclaim, down to an otherwise fair actor dying during the post-production? There's a wee bit more to it than that. Like TDK being a well made film. BB certainly did well because of that.

Critics are loving it.

I'll probably catch it sometime next week.

That was a damn good movie. Very good story, and great acting on part of the cast, and very super-duper imaginative of Nolan. Man, what a guy. I for one found the movie highly entertaining, and welcomed the complexity of the dream-plots, and all the touches. The characters were also superb, man what an awesome cast. It's good to see that there's really no true 'villain' in the movie, no real bad guy, except for the inner demons that Leonardo DiCaprio has to confront and deal with. Hell, even their target ends up with a nice ending. :D
