There's been a few that were either decent or good. The first "Resident Evil" was a decent popcorn flick (although the same can't be said for the sequels), and "Silent Hill" was pretty good (particularly the imagery).

Considering it's a Disney and Bruckheimer film, I wonder if they're hoping for another "Pirates"-style franchise.

However, it's hard to countenance the complete incongruity of Farah (an indian princess) being played by Olga Kurylenko, regardless of how good-looking or talented she might be. Particularly in today's political climate, it strikes me as a fairly offensive decision to retcon away all those troublingly non-European swarthy elements. Their choice of actor for the Prince suffers from similar problems, but I tend to see him as more of an avatar anyway, so it's less relevant to me (although I can find no logical or moral reason for why it should be so).

Then again I may just be overly cynical. It might be best to give Disney the benefit of doubt.

For the record the trailer struck me as meh. It might be a good popcorn flick but certainly not something that screams out must watch. Although if good reviews come out I may change my mind.

If they make this thing pure popcorn, teach Jake Gyllenhaal parkour, and have it end off with a giant boss-fight in the middle of a sandstorm - I will see this movie at least three times in theaters. Looking good to me from the trailer.

Me too. Usually the only decent video-game-to-movies tend to be those that that borrow elements (such as a general idea, possibly character names, themes, and so forth) and then stand as their own movies first.

I can see that happening. It's no great loss, given that the Prince's change toward increasingly brutality was pretty poorly handled. That said, I'm pretty sure I spotted the Daggertail in the trailer, and some of the effects basically shouted 'Dark Prince', to me.

I would swear that I've seen those dudes in black, or at least their weapons wielded by someone who dresses like them, in the PoP games - maybe the third one? I haven't played that one all the way through, and haven't touched it in a while - been occupied with the 'new shiny', the PS3.

EDIT: Oh, and that trailer looks great. I am cautiously optimistic, and will at least attempt to see it in cinemas when it makes it over here.

If they did I didn't go on it. I don't actually remember seeing an Aladdin ride, although I did see Aladdin. There is a pirates of the Caribean ride and haunted mansion ride though.

Its funny you should mention Aladdin and muslims taking over, since Aladdin was undoubtedly a middle eastern tale about a man from a far away land, that land however is China. Since the folk tale storyteller most probably no idea what China was like, they described the kingdom just like one in the Arab world. Although according to wiki some speculate he was in Turkestan.

Although Aladdin is a Middle-Eastern tale, the story is set in China, and Aladdin is explicitly Chinese.[2] However, the "China" of the story is an Islamic country, where most people are Muslims; there is a Jewish merchant who buys Aladdin's wares (and incidentally cheats him), but there is no mention of Buddhists or Confucians. Everybody in this country bears an Arabic name and its monarch seems much more like a Muslim ruler than a Chinese emperor. Some commentators believe that this suggests that the story might be set in Turkestan (Central Asia).[3] It has to be said that this speculation depends on a knowledge of China that the teller of a folk tale (as opposed to a geographic expert) might well not possess - compare "Cathay".

And I am sure "not homophobes" have already screamed about Disney already, since Disney gives the same benefits to gay couples that it does to straight ones, which of course requires Disney to acknowledge them in the first place.

What struck me was seeing the palace or whatever collapse at the end, with CG columns toppling this way and that and CG Jake Gyllenhaal sliding around on waves of CG sand: specifically, it struck me that I am completely bored with these kinds of scenes. Am I the only one who feels like this? It's like, guys, seriously, I love Indiana Jones too, but it's closer to thirty years than twenty that we've been watching heroes improbably escape from collapsing building special effects (I know the cliche is older, but I feel like the Indiana Jones movies pioneered their modern form). Find some new way to get the adrenaline pumping.
