Bad Timing: Going Inactive for a Bit

Post by Coyote »

I should have posted this a month ago, so my apologies for not realizing how things were building up. I've been pretty active in the past but of late I haven't been posting much. I've been faced with a bunch of real-life issues that have all sort of rushed in at me all at once, including a lot of new responsibilities at work due to some unglamorous but necessary restructuring of responsibilities there, and facing what is likely the 'beginning of the end' of my dad's long, slow slide into the realm of terminal cancer. There are many other, smaller issues that --by themselves-- would not be issues but coming together seem to be at battalion strength.

I've cut back a lot of internet activity entirely, the only exception being the story I'm involved in at SB.com which I have a 5-year history with, and also happens to be a useful outlet.

I won't disappear entirely; I'll still be reachable via PM or at the Facebook site (although I'm only there once a week, in general) but for now I have to put things in low gear and wait until I get time to climb on top of things before I can resume normal operations.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Best of luck to you, and you have my condolences for your father's condition.

Okay, some updates. Obviously I've been on the board a bit the last week or so; most of the stuff at work has calmed down. We were leaving one fiscal year and beginning another, so all the i's had to be dotted and all the t's had to be crossed, inventories done, yearly training ticket's punched, etc. Now, we're moving into our traditionally slow season.

So work isn't so bad, now, but things are up in the air with my dad. He won't take any more surgeries and the cancer, near as we can tell, is all in the lymph nodes, his arm is swollen massively, and his brain is starting to be affected. My mom finally broke down and ordered not just the home hospice care, but they're moving in a hospital bed into my parents' living room. Definitely not a good sign. And, I finally broached the subject with my mom, and found that absolutely no arrangements have been made at all with any funeral directors, etc. So I'm going to start stepping up to that plate, too.

So I'm still here, just part-time, and of course given the circumstances I may drop off the board all sudden-like, to be gone for awhile. Thanks to all those who gave messages of support, and for those who have gone through this or, for some reason are going through this now, believe me, I have extreme empathy for your situation and wish all the best.

Well, my dad finally died early this morning, putting an end to about 2 years of suffering. He was ready to go, and went peacefully in his sleep. Arrangements were made for him, simple cremation with no ostentatious bells or whistles (not my dad's style).

If there is an afterlife, they'd better have motorcycles, or he's going to be grouchy. Beer and cigarettes, too.

So I may not be here much, or I may log in to keep myself occupied, I dunno. Still kinda disconnected right now. Thanks for the support of all who have commented and kept me & my family in their thoughts.
