Sean Bean to Star in HBO's Game OF Thrones

I think most fantasy fans will be pleased with HBO's choice for the lead role in their upcoming adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones. Sean Bean has signed on to play Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark, who is known as the Lord of Winterfell, Lord Paramount of the North, and Warden of the North... got all that? I have to admit, I haven't read the books, but they sound pretty damn complicated -- all the more reason why it is better for them to be adapted as an HBO series rather than a feature film.
Bean is no stranger to fantasy epics, having starred as Boromir in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Odysseus in Troy, and Zeus in the upcoming Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. He joins a cast that now also includes Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister and Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon plus relative unknowns Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Jack Gleeson as Joffrey Baratheon, and Harry Lloyd as Viserys Targaryen. Thus far HBO has only committed to shooting a pilot episode, which will be directed by Thomas McCarthy (The Visitor). David Benioff (25th Hour, Troy) and D.B. Weiss (Lucky Wander Boy) are collaborating on the script. What do you think, is Sean Bean the right man to play... uh... Ned? For more info check out the unofficial fan blog Winter Is Coming.
That's hella awesome. Although I notice this means that Sean Ban will be killed off before the end of the series.. again. Does that man ever not die? (yes, yes, he's Sharpe I know)

Still the role that worries me most about them doing correctly is Tyrion.

I think that producers are forced to always kill his character off as a sort of compensation for getting to play Sharpe. I mean, honestly, Richard Sharpe is like some sort of 19th century Chuck Norris. There has to be balance in the universe.

Anyway, sounds good, hope this gets past the pilot episode. The book's narrative structure (focusing on one character each chapter) should lend itself well to a series.

They have a Tyrion, they have a Ned. All they need is a good pair of Lannister twins, Cersei and Jamie to deliver the pilot ending line.
The things I do for love

As for Sean Bean he can do it, even if he does not get great death scene it is still good. However he does get to die in slow motion again. I'm sure he'll love that.

Technically if they do it correctly, won;t he die twice? From both Sansa and Arya's PoV. Oh and has it been stated it somewhere that is where the pilot would end? It seems a really early point in the book.

First your question.
He only "dies" once, we see him die from Arya's point of view and we get flashbacks from Sansa, he will also be Guest starting in Bran and Jon's POV's but only in dreams and only in one shots, he does not have even appear, just a a single shot to show Bran in the tombs sitting with his father. Maybe they will add in a touching little speech with Ned giving a little you have to grow up now speech that was hinted at in the books but never expressed.

To your second question here's what the pilot would/could contain

Beyond the wall and setting up the Others
The execution and finding dire-wolves in the snow
Some short of montage to introduce Katlin and the children
The King is Coming
Sparing in the Keep and the into of the Lannisters
The Message and hints
The Feast, Jon wants to join the Night's watch and Tyrin's introduction
Bran climbing and the things I do for love...

It's a pretty packed episode when you spell it out. Plus they can do two good shock moments one with the transition from the Other to Ned trying to talk to the Deserter. And the ending line.
