"Wolverine and the X-Men" Review (Spoilers!)

Post by Steve »

I may just rewatch the entire series to give episode-by-episode reviews later, but for now....

This show is freakin' awesome. It is literally the best animated adaptation of the X-Men mythos to have yet been produced: better than X-Men Evolution, better than Joe Calamari's animated series of the 1990s. It manages this despite the groan-inducing title and making Logan the new leadership; in fact it actually works with that awkwardness, of Logan in command, quite well.

And the number of "OH SHIT!"-inducing moments, whether as events of awesomeness or from the revelations as the storyline unfolds, is quite good for twenty-six episodes.
Spoiler
In fact, in one episode of this show, you will cheer for a Sentinel. Not telling anymore beyond that, though!
I'm not sure if it'll ever air on US TV (I believe it's aired in Canada though) or if its destined for direct DVD release, but if you can find a way to watch this series, I give it... a 5/5. Imagine, a round number from me!

Wow, the best ever Spider-Man, X-Men and Batman animated series all being made at the same time? We're really living in a golden age.

I know that Batman comment is going to draw some controversy. Suck on it, The Brave and the Bold is awesome.

I tried watching Wolverine and the X Men. . .sort of. But such a Wolverine-centric title annoys me to no end so I don't think I'll sit through it. Needless to say I'm not terribly happy with all the Wolverine wanking Marvel's been doing over the last few years.

Last few years? Try last few decades.

Steve was telling me about this last night, and while "WOLVERINE and those other guys" turns me off as well, I've been itching for a good Marvel cartoon since, well... forever. Especially since BTAS came out, so I'm going to give this a go.

Its become far more noticeable ever since the X-Men movies came out.

Have you watched any of Spectacular Spider-Man? One of the best superhero series I've ever seen and definitely Spidey's best outing outside the comics.

I've been bitching about excessive Wolverine wank since the early 90s. In fact when the first movie was still in early pre-production I & everyone I talked to just assumed it would be Logan-centric.
The simplest solution takes the shortest time to write down.

"The women!!" - Spock

How many episodes in did you watch it?

And I frankly had a similar attitude. But if you give the show a chance it may surprise you....

Only the first episode. Hence "tried". Needless to say I dislike Wolverine a fair deal. :P

Bah, no wonder given that most of the others don't start filtering in until the next episode (Nightcrawler is the last to rejoin, though there's a reason his return is so late, and it comes after three non-consecutive episodes where he plays the central role).

I'm sorry, but why do they have to remake the "Senator Kelly hates mutants, is saved by them, learns they're not so bad" arc every single time? Come up with some original characters already.

Spoiler
Eh, I didn't see him going that route so much as "holy shit, if I start this war between mutants and humans I'm fucking humans over too because only the machines will win!" when he's shown the future.

Apparently the show is airing in the US now, on Nicktoons. Again I recommend you at least give it a try. Once it gets some momentum going (takes a few episodes) it becomes damned excellent (I grant, however, that there are perhaps one too many "Wolverine-centric" episodes in this run of 26. The two Weapon X-related episodes are good but episode 7 was needless filler if perhaps a bit fun, episode 17 was also filler but I thought it was a good play on Logan's past concerning the Land of the Rising Sun).
Spoiler
Okay, okay, I think the "Professor X can use Cerebro in the future to link with the minds of the present day X-Men to help them thwart the apocalypse" angle was a bit too much deus ex machina, though I loved the "future X-Men" storylines (especially episode 21. Most especially 21. DAMN.) And Season 2 looks like it might be more of that, though they could throw some curves in that season.

I do believe it's started hitting DVD now as well.
