Opinions Wanted: Kaiju/Giant Monster Timeline

Post by Majin Gojira »

For a while now, I've been working on a Giant Monster crossover/shared world timeline for a unified universe (Wold Newton Theory in full effect).

I would like to get some thoughts on it on things to add/remove, expand notation on.

For the purposes of this timeline a Kaiju is:
1) A creature of unusual dimensions (either size or form) that has not evolved naturally on earth.
2) A creature of tremendous size and mysterious origin.

This may take several posts to get in, because it's freckin' HUGE.

Several entries are not given a date due to the exact nature of the dates provided. These are from: The Marc Ceracini Godzilla Novels, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Zombie Survival Guide, Cryptozoological History, Myth and Legend and a few from 'reality'. Some others are part of the histories of listed films and you just didn't notice it.

If you do not recognize the name of a monster, google it or check the links at the end of the Timeline.

300,000 BCE – Gargoyles first appear. Some time afterwards, a extremely large member of the Genera is imprisoned in stone for his cruelty. It is later dubbed Garuda.

250,000 BCE – Modern Man and Neanderthal Man evolve. The world is filled not only with prehistoric giants, but demonic horrors and monsters as well.

50,000 BCE – The Agricultural Revolution occurs thanks to multiple interventions of other beings called ‘gods’ and ‘demons’ in later literature. There are now human settlements to ravage.

48,000 BCE – Balrogs, Wyverns and Kumo (Giant spiders of mystical origin) are thought to have appeared around this time.

18,000 BCE – The Muan/Atlantean Empire constructs the RahXephon. Gyaos, a biological weapon are created from the genetic material of surviving pterosaurs on earth and Mahars, run rampant. While originally created to fight the demon armies, they turn on their creators instead—due to the manipulations of the entity dubbed Sauron. Gamera is then created to stem the growth of the Gyaos. RahXephon is constructed for a more desperate act, escaping into another dimension for several thousand years. RahXephon remains buried after their main city is removed from this dimension.

17,800 BCE – The demon army that sent Atlantis/Mu beyond this world moves on the remaining forces of the world. The demon army is eventually driven back when its leader is defeated. The events are mythologized as The Last Alliance of Men and Elves.

Iconic Size-changing, monster-fighting hero from Japan. One of the first classic Tokusatsu series.

I don't want to get into what a headache reconciling the Ultra franchise with the rest of the timeline was.
G-FORCE??!? WTF? Which version.. the 1970s or the OVAs?
Neither.

It's a novel-created team with a similar name. Basically, kids recruited a-la "The Last Starfighter", pickedup and trained by the military to fly very complex anti-kaiju Helicopters around the millenium.

Wow. That's really cool. 2 questions though: Where are you getting the timeline for your Godzilla events through the third post? I just don't recognize them as fitting within the Toho films. Also, what's the difference between Gorgo and Godzilla in your posts? I know about both of the original monsters, so I assume you're using Gorgo as a substitute for several "Godzilla" franchise entries.

*GLARES* If you are going to use the Name... use the Characters. Hell, you're using ULTRAMAN, why not G-Force?

He is using G-force just not the one your thinking of. The G-force he's using is from a Godzilla novel, and was retconned into G-Force USA when they made G-Force global, and folded into the International Kaiju Taskforce we see in Godzilla:Final Wars. The events of the novel happen in the US between two of the movies (I'd have to find the Official timeline to tell when.).

They come from the Randomhouse Novels written by Marc Ceracini. They are how Godzilla is allowed "In" to the massive crossover universe, due to a connection with the Cthulhu Mythos (Miskatonic University).
Also, what's the difference between Gorgo and Godzilla in your posts? I know about both of the original monsters, so I assume you're using Gorgo as a substitute for several "Godzilla" franchise entries.
Implicitly, Ogra and is a female member of Godzilla's mutant species.

Also because the Godzilla of Marc Ceracini's novels is very Heisie in nature and has a rather strick timeline, so to account for the other Godzilla-labeled instances, a substitute had to be found. Ogra and Gorgo fit the bill.
*GLARES* If you are going to use the Name... use the Characters. Hell, you're using ULTRAMAN, why not G-Force?
Because they have the same name. Marc Ceracini's novels have a G-Force, and there happens to be another team that's completely unrelated that has the same name in some other universe.
More or less. Though the Task Force in Final Wars (as to the events) bear only some semblance as to what happened (since there was so much crap going on at that time).

It's is as humorous and silly as you think it is.

Two questions about the Gargoyles part of this project... Why do you put them as Irish in this timeline, considering that the Wyvern class is native of Scotland? And not even a mention of Oberon's actions during the Gathering?

Considering that the guy made himself 500+ meters tall during his attack against the Aerie building and that this is a timeline about giant monsters there should be at least a mention, because even if he put the entire city to sleep something that big would probably have been detected with satellite images.

Because I was stupid and got them mixed up.

I now hand my head in shame.

Good point. I will make those alterations for the final version.

All right. A couple more ideas:

-If you are going to play with Gargoyles mythology to the point of including the Star Spawn invasion and make a connection with Lovecraft, then Nokkar's presence in Earth becomes far more important than a mere "sentinel" for Earth (and the fact that his base of operations in Easter Island is surprisingly close to the south Pacific location of R'lyeh is quite interesting). If his priority is ensuring that Cthulhu does not wake up, it would explain why he doesn't show up when the random megamonster of the week shows up in Japan, for example.

-Just for shit and giggles, you might want to include Don Quixote de la Mancha, who in the novel is a lunatic who charges against windmills because he thinks they are giants, yet in TTL he could be an unfortunate fellow who actually fought giants and other monsters. Of course, when the well-meaning, but badly informed people of his home village heard about his adventures, they supposed that he had gone nuts and eventually convinced him that all he had experienced were actually allucinations caused by reading too many fantasy novels.

-Also, are there spider-Kaiju out there? If so and with Tolkenian mythology more or less in the field, then Ungoliant is about the best ancestor for it you could possibly want.

That's a good one, and one I will definitely employ, I'll add Nokkar's role to the timeline.

Don Quixote is already part of the greater WNU, and I like him as a zany idealist.

Yeah, but getting a solid real-world timeline for certain events in Tolkein's series is pretty damn hard...I'll have to go over some things for that one.

Besides, all Kumo notes are the daughters of Ungoliant.

A good place to set it is in the celtic regions of europe with ending 4-3500 BC with a cataclysm of some sort ending those civilizations. This is a good time as china and egypt are really the only peoples with written histories at those points.

Having Ireland and a england as part of the continent before hand works into to that. Even using the movies as a base for cultures. This unamed cataclysm tears Middle earth apart. Rohan became the early anglo-saxon celts. Mordor and Gondor are under the north sea. Hobbiton and Mirkwood are in Ireland, the elves being the Tualtha de Danaan finally dieing off after defeating the last Uruk orcs and trolls(firbolg). Hobbits die out due to inbreeding but not before spawning Leprechaun myths in the few humans who live there.

Floods and or kaiju make ending civilizations without a trace relatively easy. Its also possible that the C.H.U.D. are in fact the decedents of goblins who were already horribly inbred and cannibalistic.

The entire timeline has to be pushed back, though, largely because of other things--like the Hyperborean Age (Conan) after the Tolkenian sagas end. I had to bring back the Agricultural Revolution back to 50,000 years ago to compensate for it all.

Actually, Orc, Trolls and Elves all survive in one form or another. Some in Demon Armies within Hell Dimensions. Others hiding in the crevaces of the earth (Angel: After the Fall, Hellboy: The Troll Witch--Neither are Kaiju instances so they are unlisted in the timeline).

Even the Elves still have a precence: The ones that left this world live their immortal lives in "Heavenly" dimensions, and have basically become Tokugawa era Japan in terms of society and culture.

Few Elves that did not join their bretheren in the Undying Lands ("Dark" elves), they went further and further from man's (and Oberon's) reach---eventually hiding out in Pellucidar as their last stronghold--becoming quite different from their extra-dimensional bretheren. More "Human" in many respects (running from giant dinosaur monsters and psychic pterrosaurs has a bad effect on folk).

Because of Pellucidar's odd sky, I like to speculate that they've essentially turned, visually, into World of Warcraft Night Elves. Because it's cool.

And Pellucidar is also home to the Mole People--and I totally forgot about that and your post reminded me!

Not as hard as you think, though it does make a case for the area of Gondor and Mordor to be obliterated in some manner. The idea that they are under the black sea came from placing Rohan in england and seeing where gondor would be. Adding the Hyborean age actually helps because the age ends in a massive restructuring of the geography, also with the vast amount of ruins and 'lost' cities. Hyborea could be seen as the last gasp of middle-earths civilization. By the end things are falling apart so badly Conan (at age 60) pretty much abandons hyborea as a lost cause and sets out to find Mayapan a legendary lost continent.

Still a group of them on Ireland would explain the Tualtha and Firbolg.

Contradiction in terms. The Anglo-Saxons are not Celts.

Whoops that was suppose to say Anglo-saxons, britons and celts. I was in a bit of a hurry. And now that I think on it only the britons and celts would be there as anglo-saxon migration to Scandinavia and England occurred in the 5th century.

Survival of the elves in some fashion also can be explained as the source of welsh dialect. Tolkien based Sindarin phonic structure on welsh.

WOW! You are totally awesome for putting all that together, and for including The Goonies, of all things. You don't miss much do you?

However, I do note that you don't seem to have the Thing from John Campbell's infamous short story "Who Goes There", or if you do I missed it. If you haven't got it on the list yet, please add. It's a classic.

Hmn... does anything from the works of Manly Wade Wellman merit mention on your list?
