Threw avay my microwave oven

Post by Faram »

Okay, I just threw away my fully functional Microwave oven, because I newer used it and it was taking space in my kitchen.

The last time it was used I heated some stuff that I can put in a regular owen and be done in 30-40 minutes or put it in the mico and be done in 7. But if I micro then it feels wrong, I dont get a crust on the food and I have to wait 5 minutes for the heat to spread through all food.

So do you use the microwave or is it a dust collector?

I do use it to thaw food. It speeds things a lot faster. Just warm the food for about a minute and a few 10s bursts of microwave and then let it thaw.

Personally, an oven is much more useful.

It's a convenience item... As such, the price you pay for the speed (especially in bread products, my favorite group of foods. :? ) is flavor...

The oven's a few hundred times better in that regard... As such, I only use it for things like pasta sauce (which I throw in a small pot on the stove more often anyway, allows me to doctor it up. ) and hot dogs. (Which don't have much in the taste department to loose anyway...)

I tend to use it as a back-up, and quick-steamer when required.

I want for more than a year without one, but now that I have one again I use it a fair bit. They are pretty convenient for a lot of things.

It is unlikely I could live without one.

Well, I guess I could eat freeze-dried crap and cold spaghetti'os, but that would get pretty old. I don't really care much for delicate flavor or "good" food, as long as it tastes all right and is edible (so, for example, I'd eat microwaved leftovers, but not McDonald's, which fulfills neither of the criteria).

Not that much. I just use it for popcorn and once in a blue moon to heat leftovers. As it is part of the furniture etc. that came with the apartment I rent I wont complain.

I don't have a microwave. I do use the ones at work to heat up dinner that I take with me, but at home I cook fresh.

They're great for leftovers and pillows. Or the occasional pizza when I'm feeling lazy.

I use them for some quick meals and leftovers. The problem I have with my microwave is that it is overpowered. The damn thing thinks "Defrost" really means "Extra Crispy".

I use mine all the time. It's an order of magnitude more electrically efficient than a conventional oven.

I use it for a lot of things, and they've gotten significantly better with making food work with the microwave.

We use ours all the time as well, it helps when you have kids who are screaming for food NOW!

As for our food, I generally cook frozen veggies in there if I've forgotten to get them started early enough on the stove, or if I wanna save dishes so there's less to do after dinner :).

I use the microwave quite often, sometimes for every meal of the day. It's quick and convenient, and when you're hungry NOW, it can't be beat.

I use the microwave tp

-melt butter quickly
-soften veggies quickly (i know its not so great but sometimes Im in a hurry!)
-soften brown sugar
-defrost quickly (most of our meat is frozen)
-heat up cookies ^_^

I try not to cook in it, because, when I do, it's usually not a very healthy meal!

We had to trash our microwave as the last time I put popcorn in there, it tasted metallic. Now how the hell does that happen!

Why would the microwave make a meal less healthy?

I just mean when I do it, it's usually not healthy. It's usually mac n cheese packs or frozen chicken nuggets!

Although, I have done fish in there and it turned out pretty good!

Back in my wrestling days I had a pretty rigid diet. Dieting took a huge chunk out of my day because I would have to prepare a ton of food for the NEXT day. With the schedule my wife and I currently have, this would be pretty hard to do now... and we don't have kids yet.

Sometimes the microwave is a luxury that allows us to cook much more quickly and efficiently. Preparing food and cooking with the oven or stove generally takes much longer. Sometimes you just get too much shit going on to cook at all, even with the microwave.

I've been meaning to get a microwave, but at the moment I do most of my cooking on the stove. I haven't even cracked open the oven in my apartment yet. (I moved in about a month & a half ago).

I use it all the time, particularly for soups. It's quicker and easier on electricity. Also being single I tend to make big meals and then freeze them for later as it saves time and money (buying in bulk and using the stove (or bbq) only once. I've also picked up a toaster oven for cooking small stuff that doesn't cook well in the microwave.
May you live in interesting times.
