Boris Yeltsin is dead

Post by Bounty »

BBC wrote:Former Russian President Boris Yeltsin has died, the Kremlin says.

Mr Yeltsin was 76. The cause of death has not yet been announced. He had a history of heart trouble.

In 1991 he famously outmanoeuvred former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and then triumphed against parliament hardliners in 1993.

Mr Yeltsin became Russia's first democratically elected president after Mr Gorbachev resigned as Soviet leader in December 1991.

He won international acclaim as a defender of democracy when in August 1991 he mounted a tank in Moscow, rallying the people against an attempt to overthrow Mr Gorbachev's era of glasnost and perestroika.

Y'know, I thought he already was dead. Now I have confirmation on his life force condition at least.

I remember a quote- something about Russia needing 20 years of reform to get back on its feet after the fall of the USSR. By the end of Yeltsin's rule, it only needed 19 more.

Meh, I say to Yeltsin. It's not like he was a statesman or anything.

I shouldn't have been surprised by this, (given his weight, heart condition and years of heavy drinking) yet somehow I was.

I was kind of suprised when I heard it on the radio this morning as well, but as Valdemar stated, only because I thought he'd died a while ago.

At last the bastard died. I shed no tear, I have nothing to say but that my family was hungry for the first time during the bastard's rule. May he rot in hell, if it exists. This is a punishment good enough for someone who put the country into eight years of misery.

Given that the country was allowed to break up to this extent and state coffers plundered, he deserves nothing less to have his body fed to the dogs :x

Who's next?
Gorbachov.

Now that's a figure I'd actually say a few good words about if he knocks over, even if he was a coward who let Yeltsin destroy the country and inflict countless suffering on our citizens.

Now, let's be honest about Yeltsin, he was dealt a shit hand at a shit time. At any other time, he would have been one of the "silent presidents" who don't do anything and are merely a footnote in the history books, like Hoover would've been.

Yeah, but that was when Yeltsin's career and life was already on a downward spiral - he sounds like a bafoon, but do you think Russia's economic and political disasters throughout the 90s could be the fault of "Oligarchs" rather than the politicians?

The one thing that can be said about Yeltsin is that at least he admitted in public how badly he fucked up —particularly in launching the Chechen War. By contrast, the Crawford Chimp will go whistling to his grave convinced in his pickled, coke-burned brain that Iraq was a Holy Mission and that he was wholly in the right.

I'm sure that there was a diplomatic solution to deal with people who simply killed the Party Chief of the ASSR in 91, and then from '91 to '94 began an ethnic cleansing campaign against the Russian population of Chechyna...along with instituting Sheriat law....what lovely people.

Yeltsin only really needed to apologize for the screwups that the Russian military made; like losing the Maikop Brigade completely.

Oligarchs were politicians, politicians were oligarchs. And frankly it remains so up until this very day. Yeltsin himself and the "mafia" or "family" as it is called are obscenely rich. Deripaska is a member of the "family" if that says somthing to you, that's why the mafiosi was allowed to continue his enrichment off-hands. Abramovich, Yumashev, Dyachenko - are all members of the Klan. Perhaps not as powerful as they used to be during the 90's, but still obscenely rich. They are the Oligarchs, if you didn't know.

The "family" that Yeltsin created was a powerful Mafia unlike no other. If you're interested, read here, do a Google trans. Or this - 60 million roubles each year to support Yeltsin personally, in 2002 - here.

The Klan or Family as they're known:
Image
Image

One of the terms on which Putin was allowed to take power from the Yeltsinist clique was that he would not prosecute (criminally) any member of it.

The "Family" today is wondering if it should put Yeltsin's grave in Russia - they fear desceration, too many Russians want to spit on his grave. Though, I bet they would put a several thousand dollar per month-guards around it so that people don't spit on the grave.

The bloodthirsty irrationalist in me sometimes wishes for them (oligarchs) to get a knock on their expensive doors to be dragged into a Gulag somewhere, or perhaps merely put up against a wall and shot.

Yeltsin's death caused a similar reaction on Russian forums and newspages. Around 2000 comments in the first 4 hours, with some 1500 filled with joy, but around 500 of them or so expressed regret that he wasn't judged. No crowds in the streets weeping for either him or his relatives. I have personally received around 20 or so SMS from my friends with congratulations.

Might be just for the fact that just recently a Russian oligarch used up $2 million simply to have J.Lo at his home party in London while around 1/4th of the population are below poverty line and over 50% of Russians are just slightly above this "line", eh?

Many people though wish Yeltsin was hanged, not to waste bullets and not to offer him the honor of becoming a martyr. I guess that speaks multitudes.

The man has personally promised, at the "start" of his career, that if the people's plight worsens, he will put his head on the railway under a train. We still remember that promise? So where is head rolling - we had to wait until he croaks. Well, better than nothing I guess.

Usually it's a simple "HURRAH". A poll about what should 23rd April be in the internet shows a 40% support for "celebrating" it and 28% for "mourning". Just surf around any Russian (non-emigrant obviously) news portal.

The legacy of a "democratic" thug - a Russian Tian-An-Men:
Image
The shelled Supreme Soviet, which refused to enact Yeltsin's "reforms" any further in 1993.
Image
Murdered defenders of the Parliament.
Image
"Yeltsin - murderer! Down with the bloody dictatorship!"

Image
"All power to the working people! Glory to heroes of the USSR" - on the place of Yeltsin's supression. Bullet marks drawn out in tears.
Image
A flyer passed around the people with the names of the Army divisions which took part in the supression.

This event gave the President power to disband the Parliament at will and made it nothing more than a shadow hand of his. From here, the 1993 changes, comes all of Putin's dictatorial power.

More photochronicles from 1993:

Posters on the House of Soviets:
"We defend the Law, and the power of the People! - the Deputees."

"Yeltsin has betrayed russians in our "neighbor states" (the CIS - SB), just as he betrays you!"

That's an interesting bit of recent history there, Stas.
I remember how the media here spinned Yeltsin and his actions. It sounded like he was the Second Coming of Russia, or something, but I was too young and not cynical enough to see through it.
