What the hell is a gurka knife?
Concerning knives, Brooks says that they're "always useful," and definately fill a utility function. Knives have the advantage of being lighter than hatchets, so there's a plus to mobility, but have a disadvantage of being generally less lethal compared to a hatchet: you usually have to aim for a vital point on the head (temples, eyes, base of the skull) to make an easy one-strike kill. He recommends choosing a blade less than six inches, and to completely avoid serrated and saw-blade combinations.
Mind, this is also only in the role of a last-defence melee weapon and utility.

Everyone else can do whatever the hell they want to do, including die together in a chaotic logistics explosion. Fine by me, I won't interfere. Personally I'll be following the Guide and get myself (and maybe no more than four others who care to come with me) up into northern Canada.Lord Pounder wrote:I'd take bets on who'd be first to feed the Spankster to the zombies.

Given the guidelines I summed up above, he would probably reject it totally. A hatchet would be more practical. The Yosemite Bear wrote:also known as the Kukri knife really long bladed like the american bowie knife, known for being damn leathal chopping blade, and used for excellent decapitation work in the novel Dracula.

I know where all the gunshops and hunting stores in Toronto are. I'll probably be the guy involved with sending people off to loot the stores for guns & ammo.
Best bet would probably be to hijack a few ferries and use the Toronto Islands as the base of operations, it even comes with an airport for flying in supplies. After that, I don't know, I'll let the guys with military experience plan things out.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

it's actually calsified as a machete type knife, along with the bowie, which contradicts what you already said...Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Given the guidelines I summed up above, he would probably reject it totally. The author of the Guide also seems to think that an M249 is a heavy machine gun. Verifying that he knows what the hell he's talking about in any given instance would be far wiser than mindlessly following his every utterance.
The possibilities of a large group outfitted with full riot gear holding choke points and handing off duty as the front line guys get tired doesn't even get touched on, except to mindlessly mutter about armor being bad.

I don't know, I figured with how fucked up it looked, it was more analogous to a hatchet. Doesn't matter, since it would probably be recommended to use a real machete anyway, over a unique exotic. The Yosemite Bear wrote:it's actually calsified as a machete type knife, along with the bowie, which contradicts what you already said...Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Given the guidelines I summed up above, he would probably reject it totally. It is technically a style of machette. Also it's actually designed for a variety of purposes, woodcutting for example. Think of it as a combat orientated cousin to a hatchet...Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Given the guidelines I summed up above, he would probably reject it totally. particularly consider it a hatchet/knife with centuries of practical use in decapitation, and being often forged from truck suspensions or heloblades has a serious hard enough backing that it won't break. infact it was feared by the japanese in WWII more then flamethrowers.

A machette is primarily designed for the same job, hacking through undergrowth. The kukri also is designed for use as a sort of utility knife too, they usually hold a better edge than a machette and can be used for other tasks such as skinning on top of their use in combat and clearing.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I see.

Okay; first thing we need to do is get organized. The impression the OP gives me is we're in a catering hall of some sort, a big banquet hall; I infer that it'll be relatively formal, and I expect the first hint we'll have of a zombie breakout is someone looking out the windows and seeing the things lurching along the street, if not people fleeing into the building.
The first thing, therefore, is to figure out: who's going to be in charge? As pointed out before, Rob Wilson and Jegs2 are good candidates. Assume, for a moment, Jegs defers to Rob because of superior position on the board (I know, flimsy reason; bear with me). What, then, is the organization Rob Wilson implements onto the group? Would the natural social hierarchy from the boards carry over into real life?

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I think the toronto island idea would be a good one, holding the airport there shouldn't be too difficult, and odds are that the infection wouldn't have spread to there are not too bad.

Melee: Axes, hatchets, and aluminum ballbats, available at all Canadian Tire stores and lots of other places. Police cars are also a good bet, solid full-size cars with ram bumpers.weemadando wrote:So, just to get an idea I want the top 3 items that people think of for each category which could be obtained with ease in Toronto.
Ranged (non-firearm): Molotov cocktail. Firetrucks for hosing down the zombies & running them over. Can also be used to hose them down with fuel before lighting them up.
Firearms: Shotguns. Other than that I'm not sure.
Protection: Hockey gear, but with a full-face helmet and armoured boots.
And for the locals - Shelter: The Toronto Islands are probably the best bet. There's buildings & houses there and the ferry boats we hijacked to get there can also serve as. Last time I checked, zombies don't swim too well.
Pearson airport's another possibility. We'll have to block off a few roads but it shouldn't be too hard to secure the place. Lots of shelter for everyone, plus we can have a few planes standing by to get us out of there fast in case things really go wrong.
3rd choice, don't know.

And we should have a military-type in charge, Jegs is the senior active duty guy on the board, so it's him.

Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
