What would keep them from simply building nightvision googles which can be worn like sunglasses? No, they have to take ye olde flashlight.
Hmm, that's a good point... But when you consider how badly-equipped Federation "troops" usually are, that flashlight can be considered quite an accomplishment!

MoS, that was funneh!

Also, flashlights are only used for interior spaces. If the Nemesis phaser rifle is also designed for use outdoors, then the flashlight is a very good way of giving away one's position to the enemy. This seems like a reasonable conclusion, because there are outdoor fights in Nemesis (according to the presence of Dune Buggies in their trailor). The Nemesis phaser rifle, for a weapon of the 24th Century, looks terrible.

M-16 vs AK

Post by Doomriser »

Yes, the M-16 is indeed being issued in large quantities in Israel. Did you know that the Israeli army designed the best tank in the world, the Merkhava III?Yet they're switching over to the U.S. M1. Why? Why? WHY? Because the M-1s are being delivered at a MUCH more agreeable price. The same thing is happening with the assault rifles. The M-16s are being _Given_ to Israel. And as for the special forces teams, standardization is important for all army units.

When the Israeli army actually had to equip a new standard rifle for the first time, they had a pick of any rifle in the world, including the M-16 and AK-47. What did they pick? They designed their own ideal rifle, the Galil, which uses the same basic mechanism of the AK-47. (The AK-47 was nicknamed the "Tiger of the desert" because it was not affected by sand like the M-16.) The M-16 is indeed the "King of the range." A Sargeant I know tells me that the M-16/C-7 is just like the Ross rifle of WWI. It was a rifle issued to the Canadian army that operated just fine in trials, but broke down in trench conditions. An M-16 type rifle will begin to rust after less than a day in the field. Hell, they even have a "bolt-assist" because they were initially so unreliable that they needed an external mechanism to close the bolt!

Yeah, I know all that. I also know that the primary reason why the M16 had to have the bolt assist handle installed was because the US military refused to use high-grade powder with the weapon, in spite of the demands of the M16's manufacturer. All objects that can oxidize will begin such a process in less than a day. The AK is a truly marvelous weapon. It is extremely reliable in all conditions. It is cheap, and it is simple. The M16 actually delivers a higher rate of fire, and is much more accurate. I think it is a question of taste. I have fired both weapons, and I had no problems with either one. I prefered the M16 because the AK that I was using was much less accurate than the M16 (okay, it was an AR).

Doomriser are you KIDDING me? They're getting M1s? Where did you hear this? The M1 is totally unsuited for the warfare Israel engages in- the Merkarva is a much better choice... The Merkarva IV should be in service soon I hear.

Nice T-34/76 avatar btw :)

I totally agree with you, they are not going to replace Merkavas with M1s. Here's some information about the Merkava Mk4 from the official IDF website.

Egypt on the other hand is going to soon put its Pattons out of service and modernise its huge fleet of 755 M1A1 Abrams tanks. That's quite a big number.

Israeli M1s

Post by Doomriser »

Oh well. There had been a BIG stink about Isreal getting free M1s to replace the Merkhava a few months back. Guess it never happened. But my point still stands: Israel is equipping M-16s because
1. They are working closely with the U.S., not Russia or China
2. THE PRICE IS RIGHT

Yes it is, also known as "Stägä".
I think it would be better here to call it Sako M/95 which is more understandable for foreigners, but also just as correct. After all RK and STG abbreviations are only used in FDF. Correct me if I'm wrong about the meaning of "STG" and sorry for nitpicking.
Well I thought it was called the STG-95 because that was the only name I have ever seen in reference to it.
If I may ask, where did you serve? Nylands brigade?
Yes, Nylands brigade, EoS battery, Signal unit.
