A way to Have the Sun Crusher tech implemented in SW
I've been trying to have a SW vs ST fanfic, and one aspect that I wanted to include was the sun crusher tech. Have an ISD SSD refitted with with the same type of Torpedo tubes the Sun Crusher had. As for the quantum armor, use it for an new type of SSD, or newer large superweapon

Hmmm... That would be pretty expensive, and I don't really see why not just keep that armor on a group of starfighters. But I like your signature. I also recall when Homer told Marge, "If you're going to get mad at me every time I do stupid things, maybe I should just stop doing stupid things."

I thought I heard that making the armor for the Sun Crusher was more expensive then the entire DS project. Someone check me on that.

Hmm take super armor that can take Glancing hits from the DS plus shields that can already take a pounding from 17+ SW ships for over half an our and add the ability to destroy systems at will
And you need this VS ST why?
Consdering a TRANSPORT from thirty years ago could take on 100 Defiants for half and hour and kill each one of those said ships in one shot....
And your talking about a SSD which has 12x or so the normal SD ships and a whole lot more weaponry and then adding quantum armor which SW Terat-on range weaponry can't touch
To fight 100 Mega-ton ST weaponry?
Wow talk about overkill..

Oh I almost forgot...
this refitted ISD or SSD (with the SC torp tubes) can also fire those resonance Torps.
Now talk about overkill.

I'm sorry, but this idea is almost at Trekkie level of masturbatory overkill.
The idea of the resonance torpedo launcher mounted on an ISD (not a SSD) is not so bad, but I wouldn't go with the quantum armour. That's so far in overkill, it's just stupid.

And why would you need quantum armor on an ISD? It is more effective to make fighters nearly invincible than to make massive star cruisers that are already pretty tough invincible. It would be better if mounted on star fighters, with the ability to destroy suns on ISD's.

Or maybe to protect the shield generators on the top of the ISD bridge tower. And yes, they could be sensor globes, but if they were shield generators, that would be a very good use for that type of armor.

Its not a torpedo tube, its a device, it doesn't fire a physical torpedo

They are NOT shield generators. They are probably sensor domes. See one of our other threads on this topic to see this theory rebutted.IRG CommandoJoe wrote:Or maybe to protect the shield generators on the top of the ISD bridge tower. Like quantum armor on starfighters isn't overkill? Come on. If it can take a glancing hit from a superlaser and survive, nothing the federation has can stop it.

Look, the real problem with putting quantum armor on an ISD is the cost effectiveness. Let's be EXTREMELY conservative and say that an ISD covered with quantum armor costs ten times as much as a regular ISD. This means that for the cost of that single ISD the Empire could get ten regular ones, and this might very well be a much more effective force, because it would have ten times the firepower and the ability to spread out to cover a greater area. It would also have ten times the starfighters, and it would be much more mobile and versatile. While the one ISD covered with quantum armor is nearly invincible, that might not outweigh its problems with firepower, mobility, and versatility.

Oh I didn't mean to use Quantum armor on an entire ISD, but on certain parts of it (as someone mentioned earlier).

What would be the point of only providing protection for parts of the ship? Then you would not only make the ship much less efficient in terms of cost, but you would also nullify the advantage that the quantum armor is designed to provide.

To make it much more plausible, I would suggest that you define the QC armor used in your story be described as much thinner than that on the original Sun Crusher to cut down on the cost. It wouldn't provide as "invincibility", but it would pump up long-term armor defense (even a few stray hits against the armor could add up over time).

It still has to be very expensive to implement, even if it is thinner. Why not just add more conventional armor, if you're going to keep the thing marginally vulnerable? Or better yet, why not just add power generators and better shields?

I guess it's okay, I just don't think that it is very likely given the cost/effectiveness problem.

I agree with the others - quantum armor is simply too damn expensive for use on large scale. Not that I would object to a quantum armored SD, mind you.IMO, you would be better served by having better damage recovery systems and redundant shield generators, rather than armor, which cannot be replaced on the fly, as opposed to shields.

I think it was said that researching the armor cost as much for research of the DS project.StarshipTitanic wrote:I thought I heard that making the armor for the Sun Crusher was more expensive then the entire DS project. Someone check me on that.
But the Sun Crusher is a totally new concept, and the Star technoogy was used may times before, so less research was needed.
