Do you spellcheck your posts

Post by Majin Gojira »

I don't have the best spelling, and I've been told by some people that I should spellcheck my posts before I put them up.

Spellcheck for INTERNET WEB-BOARDS. Is it just me, or is it as intensly stupid as I think it is?

I'm also generally a terrible speller for a lot of words, so I often spellcheck my posts as I'm writing them, using Google, since it only takes like ten seconds each time. Hell, sometimes I'll even edit posts afterwards when I see that I've misspelled or typed something incorrectly.

What, so just because it's the Internet it means that you can be lazy? Having grevious spelling errors in posts also tends to make the postee look less intelligent.

I make typos, I don't mis-spell. :) And I have enough faith in my fellow posters to understand what I'm talking about.

I usually have a spellcheck window open when I'm typing, and any words I'm unsure of I'll type into the checker to make sure. For instance I can rarely remember how to spell "necessary" for some reason and there's a few other words which seem simple enough but I just can't remember how they're spelt. My biggest problem however is that I sometimes skip words altogether, especially when typing longer posts where I've gone back to correct or tidy things up. I hate it when that happens since I can never seem to catch the errors when reading it over before posting.

Uh, I think you mispelled grievous. :D

I think that it's okay not to spellcheck unless you have really bad spelling. So bad that it becomes a struggle to make out what you say. Occasional spelling mistakes is okay.

No, I don't spellcheck my posts. Not because my command of the English language is imaculate, but because I'm too lazy. I tend to use substitutes for words I can't spell, but when I am forced to use a word I know I've spelt wrong, I'll use spellcheck.

Yes, the misspelling is intentional.

No, I'm arrogant enough to believe my command of the English language to be sufficient to deem spellchecking unnecessary.

Seriously, I'm lazy, and I don't misspell often enough to bother anyway.

Strangely, I do spellcheck my IM messages, but that's because it's built into GAIM, which is precisely when spellchecking isn't important.

Not so. I thought the actual word itself was "grevious," while the general was "Grievous," hence why a lot of people kept spelling it "General Grevious."

As I said, I'm a rather poor speller. :P

Generally, the longer the post the more likely I am to run it through Word before hitting submit. Such errors are simply typos that come from me re-writing sentences as I re-think them.

If it's a small one-liner I'll leave it be, or edit it if I see it's wrong later. If it's part of a big ass essay, I'm going to make sure it's intelligible before submitting.

It should be perfectly obvious to anybody who has read my posts that I don't spell-check them. Occasionally I'll check a word that I'm really struggling with, but mostly I'll just do my best an leave it be if the meaning is still clear, as my computer is pretty slow spell-checking takes so long.
After all, this is completely straightforward. What could possibly go wrong?

I am a decent speller, but there are a few words I get hung up on, like "ridiculous". Anyone who's taken the time and (frankly, quite creepy) effort to scrutinize my posting history may have noticed that I tend to overuse words like "absurd" and "ludicrous". This is so I don't have to go to the effort of spelling checking "ridiculous", since I will frequently spell it a different way several times in one post.

I don't spellcheck my posts with anything other than the Mk I Eyeball. I learned English by reading, so if I don't know how to spell some word, it's usually something very obscure or related to some specialist field I'm not very familiar with. Of course, that means that my posts will have a number of typos, such as "teh" instead of "the" (quite often in any given word that incorporates "the", e.g. "other") or other simple cases of letters switching places.

The more common errors I make are usually the result of editing some wording before posting and overlooking something of the previous text, so there might be words or sentence fragments that do not belong and look pretty weird. That's a pain in the arse in the edit-disabled forums like N&P where the majority of my posting takes place, but shit happens.

The word is indeed spelled "grievous", both in relation to the general and the synonym for "grave".

I never spellcheck my posts; I only skim over them when I'm done. I will go back and make random grammatical changes and fixes, but if I finish typing a word and make a mistake I rarely notice it.

That said, there are words that I can never remember how to spell. That's what online dictionaries are for, though.

It is? Huh, never saw it.

Anyway, not generally. But then I tend to outright replace some words if I'm just not quite getting it to come out right. Mostly because booting up MS Word over one word is too much of a hassle for me, and I never thought of this whole Google option before.

For the most part, I spell check while I type, mainly because I am a horrible typist (as proven by the number of times I hit the 'backspace' key on my keyboard). But if I make a typo here or there, I don't really care too much.

I often do. I tend to meticulously over-analyse every post I make to this board, and I'm quite bad with even casual email, too. I guess I'm just anal-retentive/obsessive compulsive, or something.

It helps that I use Opera, which can integrate with GNU Aspell. On any browser text box, I can right-click, and select "check spelling". No need to even copy/paste with another app. Aspell has some other useful features/integrations, too, I just haven't looked into them myself.
