PHPBB.com attacks

If you think we've had problems with trolls, the website corresponding to the authors of the software upon which this board runs (phpbb.com) is under continual hacking and trolling and spamming attack.

They have suffered much worse than we have: everything from DOS attacks to massive spam attacks, troll attacks, and robot registrations (an automated script signs up literally thousands of new users, just to clog up the system).

The question is: why? Why would someone have a grudge against these guys? I'm just curious from a sociological standpoint; they don't flame fundie idiots the way we do, but they seem to have legions of enemies anyway.

Can anyone think of a reason why someone would have it in for phpbb.com? Or are we just looking at standard-profile sociopathic behaviour in which a powerless, weak, lonely individual tries to enlarge his sense of self-importance and compensate for his sexual insecurities by damaging a visible site, with no real concern for what the site is?

I agree. I can't think of any non-fanatical reason someone would want to do that. Those its always possible some nut out there prefers invisionpowerboard or another forum over the rest to an extreme degree...

There is no reason that a normal person would understand. The motivations are alien. But I'll try anyway. I'm sure someone will whinge that the lines I draw between groups don't really exist, but I don't really give a shit what they say.

Take Hacker society. This is a society based entirely on accomplishments. Specifically, it runs on 'gifts'. You make freeware, you distribute, you gain status.

Mirror it, like a distorted mirror. Cracker society runs on accomplishments too. For these lowlifes, causing pain and discomfort for someone is a gold star. The value of the attack increases with the visibility. Attacking us has no value for a cracker. Attacking a group of Hackers(As I understand it, PHPBB falls under the broad term of Hacker Gifts), with well-known software, counts for something.

If that's the case, is it really such a good idea to attack that particular site? Especially if the people doing it are just script kiddies?

if theyre hacking phpbb theyre not worthy of the title of hacker. you hack a gibson, well.. lol real hackers, REAL hackers, dont go for fame and glory, they go for the challenge. crackers often go for fame and glory, but theyre just attention whores. no, real hackers will hack the most difficult to hack system and tell noone but their confidants.

the people who fuck with systems obvious and publicize their efforts are childish immature fools.

Logic and reason are exempt values when we talk about such people on the Internet, why they do such things is as redundant a question as asking why black is not white.
