Ah, I can't believe I forgot it was D-Day.

I had three uncles who fought in the war. Navy, Army and Air Force. I salute them all.

And Anget has it right. They are/were the greatest generation.

I used to work with a veteran who was at Omaha beach, he still carried shell fragments in his back.

Thank you gentlemen, you did good.

To the proud men and women who took part in the D-Day invasion -

May the courageous valor you demonstrated on that day so many years ago guide us in keeping the course of peace. May your selfless dedication to your comrades in arms serve as a guiding light to the protection and promotion of freedom and liberty for all. And most of all, thank you for your sacrifice.

My Great-Uncle didn't hit the beaches until after they were secured, as he was Rear-Echelon, but he was there and saw it all. Never spoke more about it, however, so I don't know what happened after that.

Not much more to say than to second what's already been said. They were brave men who did what their duty demanded. May they never be forgotten.

Indeed.....

I know of no relative who was present in the assault forces, but my grandfather was on a minesweeper, which was employed during the invasion and later during the naval bombardment of Cherbourg. In that action the Germans intentional went for the mostly wood or thin steel hulled minesweepers with their heavy guns.

Probably saw heavy action around Caen though.

Words can't express how much respect I have for this generation, the crap they went through, the heroism they showed when it came to the crunch.
I had a great uncle who fought in the Pacific against Japan, he spent about a year in a Japanese POW camp, when he returned to Australia he shot himself.
And my great grandfather was a cook in the same war, I often wonder if they ever met each other.

None of my relatives took part in D-Day, but my grandfather was an anti-aircraft gunner in North Africa and Corsica...
