Hey all,

So real quick, I've been tossing around this thought. I know a lot of us watch Netflix, Prime, Hulu, and whatnot.

I'd enjoy discussing some of the shows/movies/whatever available on these providers. Some (or a lot, really) of it doesn't really fall under the whole Sci-Fi/Fantasy thing.

Like Ugly Delicious on Netflix. A pretty good show about food and why we enjoy it.

Santa Clarita Diet. An unusual take on zombies, plus comedy.

The live-action Fullmetal Alchemist.

On Prime, you can actually stream Elfen Lied. That was kinda great to find.

Prime actually has a decent number of cooking shows. That's one heck of a rabbit hole if you're jonesing for Food Channel; I used to be a real Food Channel junkie back in the day.

Ooh. Speaking of food. Silver Spoon, a new anime on Netflix, is actually quite good, and they usually eat something tasty looking each episode. It's actually based on a manga by Hiromu Arawaka of Fullmetal Alchemist fame, so yeah.

The expanse on amazon prime. Can’t recommend enough.

iZombie, for another our-iconic-monsters-are-different type of thing. It's on Netflix last I checked, and is usually good fun.

If To Aru Majutsu no Index is on Netflix, give it a watch. Yours truely is in it. Beyond that the plot is pretty good. It's got both funny and serious moments and it's never dull or boring. Normally I don't watch anime, but I do make exceptions for things like this. Others I can recommend are East of Eden and Neon Genesis Evangelion. if you watch that, watch End of Evangelion only after the TV series. I got lucky and got the Silver Boxset. I'll go see if any of that is on Netflix and make more recommendations if they're not.

Serial Experiments Lain. Watch that shit if you remember computers or the internet of the 90s. It predicted the social media and internet of today. Crazy show too.

Not quite. Kid with issues drops out of prep school (Japan being rather notoriously insane when it comes to higher education), goes to an agricultural school in the country, meets an assortment of weird but interesting people, deals with his issues, and finds love.

It's like... an actually reasonable and not insane shoujo, but in normal anime form. Hiromu Arawaka is a pretty excellent writer of interpersonal relations and personal growth arcs. It's a bit slow, but the two seasons on Netflix so far have been pretty decent.

Ghetto edit: Just started this after I read somewhere that there's actually a little bit of a feud between Santa Clarita Diet and the guys who created this. Apparently they think SCD is too similar. I don't see it personally, both are quirky and do have a similar subject but overall they seem different enough. I'm a sucker for medical/detective type stuff (was kinda into Bones back in the day), so it hits a good note for me.

Another recommendation: Ash vs. Evil Dead. If you like the Evil Dead film series, you'll probably enjoy the TV series. Bruce Campbell plays his classic role to the hilt and the show never really takes itself too seriously. On Netflix currently, just the first two seasons though.

Sounds a bit run of the mill for the genre, but that isn't necessarily the kiss of death, especially in the hands of an Arawaka.

I'll give it a gander.

Another recommendation, this one for the historic drama crowd: Versailles. Louis XIV costume porn. Liberal, er, liberties are taken with the historic record, but otherwise I've enjoyed it. It's a French/Canadian (IIRC) production, filmed on location in France, so the settings are excellent. Though Versailles itself actually doesn't appear that often as its current condition is more Louis XVI; Marie Antoinette liked a lot of fluff, apparently. Most of the show is actually filmed at another estate that has more period appropriate 17th century decoration. You wouldn't know it though, they do a pretty good job of recreating the setting.

It's really hard to make the connection between William of Orange and the future William of England, though... but that's mostly because the actor is distractingly pretty. Which is another thing, the show has plenty of eye candy for both genders.

For the foodies again: Samurai Gourmet. A pretty great little show about how we interact with food. Nothing fancy, just everyday Japanese food that a recently retired gentleman with too much time on his hands starts to rediscover, but every meal evokes a vision of the proverbial samurai in some fascinating scenario or other. Beyond that, the food itself evokes memories and emotions, and in itself the show is an exploration of that rather than just telling a story. It certainly engages the viewer (well, me anyway) differently than the average food show.

The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These is on Crunchyroll. It's a remake of the original, with some new stuff and some alterations but so far it's looking good and it seems to be pretty faithful to the original with some new things adapted from the novels and a remade visual style. Two episodes are out so go see for yourself. If you don't know the original, this one is recommended to any fan of space battles and political backstabbery.
Well the original is anyway so I'm really hoping this one lives up to it's name.

You asking me? What is Fire Stick? I know firewater but not stick. Crunchyroll is free(ish), you can get a free trial then the basic premium is 4.99$/month. You can get up to 1080p if you pay, 480p if you don't want to pay and the selection is limited.

Sorry! Fire Stick is just one way to use Amazon Prime on any TV with a USB. It's basically just a fancy dongle with a remote control. Besides the native material made available for free or rent/purchase via Amazon, they offer 'apps' where you can stream other material for free/fees depending on the app.

Now that I think about it I think I've seen Crunchyroll on the list of app options for Prime. I'll have to look again.

1080P isn't a big deal; 480 is probably good enough.

Er, the show. I know it's older, I know it's kind of a X-files knockoff... but it's actually fun, and I missed it entirely the first go-around. Happy to find it again, on Amazon Prime.

Amazon Prime also has a lot of the old-school James Bond movies for free. The Connery and Roger Moore movies, at the very least. Possibly a few of Daniel Craig's as well. Started Dr. No last night; didn't finish it, but that wasn't Bond's fault (though holy hell he's a fresh dude who would probably get the snot slapped out of him nowadays). Probably gonna finish it tonight.

Things I'm currently watching on Netflix

- Ash vs evil dead
- The alienist (about a journalist and a criminal psychologist investigating a serial killer in New York during the late 19th century)
- Star Trek Discovery
- The Expanse
- Peaky blinders (about an English crime family after the Great War)


and trying 1 month free on Amazon Prime where I watch
- The Grand Tour
and... that's about it? Because 95 % of what I want to see seems regionally blocked when watching Prime from Belgium
Is there an easy way to change a region or am I screwed?

Watching the Orville on NOW TV, only seen the pilot so far. Rather awkward writing/acting but damn were the effects beautiful.

Was all excited for a minute there. Then I remembered that across the pond you lot get to watch a bunch of stuff that we don't (for free/cost of subscription, anyway). Damnit.
