SOFTWARE UPDATE

Post by Darth Wong »

Hello, everyone. I just did a major software update. The server software has been updated to the latest version, and the phpBB board software has also been updated to the latest version.

There may be some teething issues, as is common with such major software changes. Areas to look for:
  • E-mail not being sent properly
  • Specialized tags not working properly (such as the spoiler and youtube tags)
There may be other issues as well. I had to recreate the BlackSoul and MillenniumFalcon themes by monkeying with CSS files, so if there are any colour-scheme clashes or readability issues, please let me know. The old "BareBones" theme is gone (although I don't know how many people used that).

I have to regenerate the search indexes as well, which could take some time.

It feels like the software is a little smoother for mobile but isn't quite as well adapted for it.

Ah, here is the announcement. I went looking in the Announcements forum, wondering if we'd been invaded! :) Now to figure out how to get this to look like I used to, because it was better in my day*, dammit!

Ok, my browser did not inform me that my message was posted which is why I kept clicking it, and apparently I posted multiple times. My mistake.

I see you've redecorated. I don't like it. [/Two, Eleven, etc.]

More seriously, on the advanced search screen some of the text for options has such low contrast with the default background I can barely read it unless I start splashing highlighting around.

I'll probably get used to the new look, just give me some time.

The view new posts link is missing. I prefer to use that to see all threads on the forum that have activity in the past day or so instead of having to visit each forum individually.

The black "new posts in this thread" icon is a bit annoying to see against the background of the BlackSoul and MileniumFalcon board styles. Could that be changed to something that stands out better ?
For example, the icon used in the prosilver style would work better in the other themes. The black icon would also work in prosilver, making it odd that it's the style that doesn't use it.

The rest is just change that I'll get used to.

Try the "Quick links" link just below the ISD.

I had to recreate the BlackSoul and MillenniumFalcon themes by monkeying with CSS files, so if there are any colour-scheme clashes or readability issues, please let me know.
In Millennium Falcon, the userbox text for "Posts:", "Joined:", etc are small black print on dark grey. Not the most readable combination. Bold text might help, if changing the color isn't an option.

Also, the small "top" arrow icons in the userboxes and several of the smileys have white-background transparencies, which look crummy on dark backgrounds.

I don't think he has that much control over the themes.

Is it possible to enable users to turn off the quick reply box? I loathe them with a passion.

Also, can the full directory be copied to the bottom of the page as before? (The Board Index>Section>Subsection thing) I find it incredibly useful.

This is definitely looking a bit more modern. Some things I've noticed.

1. Board doesn't scale for screen size. So no widescreen.
2. Icon for unread posts is hard to make out. It looks identical to the "no unread posts" icon aside from a green tint that (at least for me) is hard to pick out from the blue-grey background.
3. Quick links button seems to work fine for unread posts or my posts, but any chance of having those options on the main screen as in the previous version? Just a bit quicker to access that way.

I seem to recall a lot of tweaks had to be made the last time the board was updated.

As an older member of the board, on a laptop, I am having trouble reading the text, even on Silver. It's all teeny-tiny, almost size 5. Is there a way to get old-blind-person Large Text?

Oh and another thing I've noticed. There used to be an icon on the tab for the website in Chrome or Firefox. Now it's just a blank tab.

Wow, having the user avatars appearing on the right hand side of the screen is a little jarring I have to say...

When I click Mark Forum Read the Notification that pops up is just blank white. The text has to be highlighted to read, so might want to adjust that if possible. Kind of minor though.

I can work with "Quick Reply." The changed configuration is... disorienting (as noted, having the usernames and avatars on the right is a bit eyewatering for some reason).

I grew accustomed to the old look and never had a problem with it, but presumably the new look is better for someone somewhere so I guess that's a wash. I'm sure the software updates will be beneficial to some even if I never noticed a problem, so... yay upgrades?

I used the low-bandwidth theme. What would be required to bring it (or something similar) back?
