By my account they were drunk. This sort of bullshit is the result of the reserve system. A horrible relic of the 19th century and a shame to the otherwise great nation of Canada. It creates two legally defined classes of people based on race and begets bigotry, poverty and criminality.

I'm assuming that the reserve system means the Indian reserves? If so, I didn't know it was a real issue with Canadians. I know here in the states, many Indian nations are considered impoverished, hence why they're building casinos as a draw for money. I know it's a shock that an American doesn't know what's going on outside his own country, but then again I guess I'm still fairly new to all this.

I think the biggest tragedy might be that it isn't a real issue with Canadians. We have third world shit holes in our own country, and people are oblivious to it.

He is talking about how (for a variety of reasons) some reserves lack the basic necessities of a first world country. This is often the result of poor funding or mismanagement (The reserves system gives tribes a fair amount of autonomy in how they spend their money, and sometimes it is miss-used). Though I think most people overestimate the level of corruption on reserves, and underestimate how much more expensive it is to provide basic utilities and infrastructure in the remote regions of Canada.

What is this reserve system?

EDIT: I read other comments, and it is similar to the reservation system in the United States, where tribes have some autonomy over their borders, i.e., immunity from certain state laws and privileges under federal law. Perhaps it is similar in Canada, where the tribes have some level of autonomy from the provincial governments and privileges from the Canadian Parliament.

I do not know how this is related to the mugging in the opening post.

It's related because racists prefer to blame the victims of the system rather than the system itself (since they're a part of it).

From what I read of the posts, the muggers simply wanted beer money. There was no indication from those posts that it was a racially motivated hate crime.

I can understand how a reserve system could create a sense of entitlement among First Nations youth, since their tribes have special privileges under Canadian Parliamentarian law, while people of Chinese or Greek descent, for example, can not have their own reserves and take advantage of those parliamentarian privileges.

They're not tribes, they're nations. That's why we call them First Nations.
