My mom had a stroke...

Post by Frank Hipper »

Happened yesterday about 3 in the afternoon, she can speak, and is aware of her circumstances, but is paralysed on the left side; other than that it's too early to tell what the effects are, or will be.

I'll obviously be online intermittantly for the forseeable future.

I can sympathize, my Grandmother had a stroke. Hopefully things go as well as they can.

Shit, man. Good luck to you, her, and your family.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I'm sorry for her troubles. Do you know if it was a CVA (stroke) or perhaps it's little brother a TIA. If it was a TIA, most of her muscle control and abilities lost during the TIA should come back after a couple days.

Damn, that sucks. My mother-in-law had one three years ago...very very similar to your mother's symptoms. The GOOD news is, she recovered quickly and after 3-4 months was able to get around with a walker. After 6 months, she was able to walk unassisted. However, she doesn't walk the same, and she has had permanent loss of motor control in her left leg. And her balance is still shaky. All common effects, and not debilitating.

One thing you should keep an eye out for is an increased psychological dependency. My MIL went from being an independent person to someone who, literally, needs to be around other people. From what I've seen (from my MIL and from a close friend), having a stroke is like being struck by lightning, and once you've had one, you're in constant fear of the next one. Even if it never happens. Expect your mom to be more dependent and, yes, more needy, after her stroke. Expect to be around her a lot more, unless she has the personality of a wolverine and goes into a mental burrow to face the next stroke (even if it never happens) alone.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, most of us care for our parents in their dotage as they did us when we were young. You now have an unfortunate head start, but the good news is that she's still here to exasperate you. I hope she gets better soon.

Bummer, Frank. Hope she gets better.

My grandfather had a stroke years ago, and if it wasn't for my mother taking him to the hospital right away he might not be around now. He gets around fine with a walker and now a cane here, but when he goes back to the old country in the winter he can apparently get around well enough to ride bicycles around the countryside. If it wasn't for the video evidence I'd never believe this, of course.
