Alcoholic Beverage of Choice

Post by loomer »

As we have a non-alcoholic version of this running, I thought I may as well see what intoxicating concoction everyone likes.

For me? There are four things I drink regularly. Brandy alexanders, which are just fantastic. Gibson martinis. Straight scotch. And red wine, ideally an Australian cabernet.

So what of the rest of you?

Port; Ruby or Tawny. I rarely drink though and a bottle can sit in the fridge for months at a time.

I drink rarely, but I've taken a liking to Appenzeller Alpenbitter. It has a very strong taste (almost spicy), which I like because it encourages drinking it slowly.

Guinness for my occassional beer. Pino Gricio, there is a nice Italian label called Bolla I like or if not, I'm found of an Australian brand. I also like a good Pino Noir, or merlot. I hardly drink hard liquor anymore, hell I don't usually drink the above much any more, but if I do I like Mohito's or depending on the setting a good whiskey sour.

Beers, I like to try different kinds now and then. Aside from that, scotch.

For me, I drink rum and coke, mead (on the rare occasion when it's available), or margaritas (on the rocks, not frozen). Can't stand wine or beer, though.

Wheat Beers; especially Victory Sunrise. I can drink that stuff like its water and I love it. Yuengling Lager is a damn good economy beer though, its what I and all my friends normally drink. I only buy the cans though since the quality is just all over the place with the bottles.

When I drink, which is rare, I prefer single-malt scotch, good vodka (Grey Goose is probably my favorite), or a darker beer like Newcastle. I'm not a big fan of wine.

I'm a fan of bitterer drinks. For beer I am a big fan of IPA's and Double IPA's. Favourite beers brands are probably Lagunitas, Dark Horse, and Dogfish Head. All in the IPA variety.

Not a huge fan of the more common lighter beers. Coming from my hoppy beers they taste like barely flavoured water

For other drinks I'm partial to gin and vodka. Usually mix them with tonic. I usually drink New Amsterdam gin, and no real preference for vodka, as long as it isn't really shitty.

The Gin and Vermouth Martini. Sure it tastes downright awful, but would you just look at how smooth and invigorating it is!

Awful? Martinis taste awful? My friend, I fear there is something wrong with your tastebuds! Quickly, to a doctor with you!

So things go in a couple categories here:

Mixed
Vodka Martini, heavy on the Vodka (that is 4 measures of Vodka against 1.5 of Vermouth), with Olives
Jack and Coke, sure its simple but its a nice sweet drink that you can party with or sip to enjoy at home
SoCo and DP, same as above but more of a home drink

Strait Liquor
Scotch, preferably Glenlivet 15yr or older
Gentleman Jack, a sipping Jack Daniels

Beer
Yeungling Lager
Yeungling Porter
Bass Ale (alone or as part of a Black and Tan)
Smithwick's

Wine
Whites: Generally off-dry Rieslings, some particular favorites:
  • Chateau Ste Michelle 2007 Eroica Riesling
Chateau Ste Michelle 2006 Indian Wells Riesling
Esoterica by Kent Rasmussen, 2007 Riesling
The last is probably my favorite but also the hardest I've ever had to look for. A grand total of 340 cases were produced of this wine and the vineyard from which the grapes were grown actually pulled out the Riesling Grapes right after the harvest so its a last of its kind. I've got one case still at home and it will probably be a bottle or two as gifts this year, a bottle for my wife and I's anniversary and the rest held for future special occasions.

Reds: Generally medium bodied Pinot Noir or Cabernet blends
  • 2005 Lorenzino Reserve, Basignani
Its a Maryland red which would tend to suggest less than optimal but its also the only Red I've ever bothered to purchase a case of, still have a few bottles left.

If I have my choice of beers I generally go for Newcastle Brown Ale; but my favorite beer ever was Aventinus double bock. Without a doubt, double bock is my favorite type of beer. It goes really well with- get this!- Thai food.

For hard liquor, I prefer scotch but usually settle for Jack. My usual bar order is a "Newcastle and a shot of jack."

Screwdrivers, but only in a 1 part vodka to 4 parts OJ mix.

I can't hold my alcohol.
