What courses do you have this semester?

Post by [R_H] »

Fellow students, what courses do you have this semester?

I'm a first semester Electrical Engineering and Information Technology student.

I have:
  • Analysis I
  • Linear Algebra
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Informatics I
  • Network and Circuits I
  • Digital Circuits
  • PPS (projects)
In total, 27hours of lectures and tutorials. I don't know how many hours of PPS I'll have a week, but I'm guessing it will be less than 3.

  • Intermediate macroeconomics
  • International economics
  • Seminar on economics: property rights (this is a two-hour discussion class where I get to argue with Austrian professors and libertarian locals)
  • Complex analysis
  • Geometric topology
  • Astrophysics
  • Honors life sciences: biology of food
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

lol. I'm wrapping up some arts and humanities this semester so I have it easy.

Art History: Paleolithic to 100CE
Philosophy
Intro to Fiction (counts as an art/humanity course)
World History: Paleolithic to 1500CE

Easy/cheesy. I go back to blood and guts in the spring.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Two weeks left until I can actually register, but my coursework will probably be (at minimum, I hope to add a course in the humanities):
  • INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE (expanded)
  • ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM
  • Classical Mechanics
  • APPLIED MATHEMATICS (1)
  • LINEAR ALGEBRA FOR PHYSICISTS
  • PHYSICS Tutorial 1ST YEAR STUDENTS
  • INFORMATION & LIBRARY RESOURCES FOR COMPUTER SCI
  • DISCRETE MATHEMATICS
  • Infinitesimal Calculus for Physics and Engineering students
Fun times :D.

I'm going to have 20-30 hours of Chinese a week!

So:

Chinese speaking!
Chinese vocabulary!
Chinese writing!
Chinese grammar!
Chinese listening!
Chinese reading!
Chinese literature!
HSK preparation!
Chinese elocution class!

Yay! I love Chinese!

I'm looking into getting Japanese and Korean classes too. Otherwise I'll forget all of my Japanese and remain unable to communicate with all of my Korean friends at the same time (so inconvenient).

No Chinese sex-ed and sex therapy? :P

Lusankya: Deal!
Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either. :P

Why are you only able to register in 2 weeks, do you have to register for each course? And you're taking 9 courses this semester?

Contract Law.
Land Law.
European Law.
Tort Law.

Yay for the law conversion course (uniquely (as far as I know) British thing where graduates can do the core parts of a law degree in one year and then have the same rights as if they'd done a full law degree).

Computational Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow (my own field of knowledge, but from the mechanical engineering department to get a different viewpoint)
Intro to Thermodynamics, Kinematics and Statistical Mechanics (likewise, but from the chemistry dept.)(

Let's see:

Quantum Chemistry
Statistical Mechanics
Advanced Inorganic Chemistry

(you should read the above as that the Graduate advisors want me to learn my ass off about Group Theory)

At minimum I must attend one seminar a week and seminars and colloquia as they present themselves.

College Teaching
Some Poster Sessions later in the semester when it becomes time to chose a group.

I'm teaching two general chemistry labs of four hours each, with associated office hours.

I also appear to be taking a course in the monumental clusterfuck of bureaucracy that is the University of Arizona Administration, particularly revolving around the Bursar and the Graduate College, who themselves do not know their collective assholes from a hole in the ground.

Unlike you cool kids I have lame liberal arts courses like Life Drawing and Character Design and Introduction to Computer Graphics, all leading me to a wonderful career bagging groceries. Or rather, I would get such a career, but I'd be "overqualified".

I'm just on my second semester, so:
Constitutional Law I
Civil Law I
Introduction to Law II
History of the Law II
Macroeconomics
I completed Political Science and International Relations, I'm still seeing if I manage to get into Institutions of Roman Law or if I'll have to take it the next year.
Damn fine cup of coffee.

3rd semester of a physics and engineering dual degree program:

PHY 302, Optics
PHY 320, Statics
MTH 309, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations
HON 202, Body, Mind and Well-Being (basically the Honors version of gym)
HIS 102, Global Transition and Change
MUS 163, Wind Ensemble

All in all not too shabby. I could do without the stupid history gen-ed, but I have to take it eventually, so I guess I might as well get it out of the way.

Why don't you just take an undergraduate abstract algebra course? Group theory was covered in the first semester. Or are you supposed to be going in-depth into the body of theory?

The registration website opens up for science freshmen only as of that gate (the list is one plucked out of the minimum mandatory classes for a first semester computer engineering student).
Once the site opens up, I'll be registering for these delightful, fun and easy courses :D (and maybe another one if I can game the system).
Anyway, it's only 8 real courses (the 9th is just a few weeks in how to use the research library and university computer systems).

All the math subjects I could get my hands on (don't make me remember wich), leaving the juicy computer science subjects I have left for next semester.

-Honors Senior Seminar (Environmental Science)
-German History 1780-1918
-Advanced Oil Painting
-Ballet
-Environmental Philosophy
-East Asian Politics

You may notice it's a little light on science/everything, but I actually have all but one of my science classes for my major completed (plus some), sans one which hasn't been offered for two years, but will be in Spring. It's actually a semester for me to mostly explore and finish up my arts minor/gen eds. while having sufficient time to properly apply to grad schools.

On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

Are we talking about the same Group Theory, like with Point Groups and Symmetry Operations and reducible representations and stuff? Well, come to think of it, that's possible, but somehow I don't think the abstract algebra course covers its extremely deep meaning to chemistry, specifically spectroscopy and using reducible representations to predict the different types of vibrations a molecule can undergo and how that affects the spectrum of the molecule.
