Sorry, but this is Rathauspatz, Vienna. And the guys are Austrians.

No Germans involved.

Pretty sure Austrians are just Germans who are enamored with their own excrement.

In the same way a restaurant that serves no Czech food is Czech, yes.

:D

Well, OK, Austrians are crazy, but they build great stuff. And they sound like Germans, just like Canadians sound American. :P

The machine is from a German company, and the show is German, so the fact that the stunt took place in Vienna doesn't invalidate the title. The clip merely proves that German does build some great heavy equipment, and Austria has some insanely good (insane?) heavy equipment operators.

Last time I checked, Austrians were culturally German. Alpine German or Southern German, specifically.

This show looks like its from the early 90s. However, it is German. I therefore deduce that it was made this Christmas.

It was a bit odd how the presenters were dropping from English to German.

That was actually a pretty cool demonstration. Though I wonder what sort of safety factor they used when they set it all up. Presumably it was higher than what you might think just looking at the whole performance, but my curiosity is piqued.

Eh?

Which is fitting because Wienerschnitzel bears a rather suspicious resemblance to Chickenfried Steak.

You guys fail... :D
The show (Wetten dass) is not German, but a joint production of German, Austrian and Swiss Television (ZDF, ORF and SF) ... :D
It's actually one of the biggest things in german-speaking television, and running since 81' till now, and not once has ended in time... :D

International stars are killing to be on it. (Guest list so far)

The US started a spin-off called "Wanna bet" in 2008.

I'd argue the Texas of Germany would be Bavaria. Which makes Austria the Mexico of Germany.

Anyways, in many ways Bavaria and Austria are closer culturally than Bavaria and Northern Germany.

And still, the Bavarians are the ones who look down the most on Austrians. Indeed, the similarity to Texas-Mexico is stunning. Spoiler
Only with the small difference that our immigrants to Germany usually end up as execs or other good jobs instead of menial labour.

No, while he probably grew up with watching it whenever it aired (every other month), this is agame-show, with varying bets.

Cars/machines weren't a regular part of it, it usually was people claiming they could identify crayon colour by taste, know songs by just hearing the first two notes, spitting ping-pong balls into glasses at 10 feet, cycling down a hill faster than a skier... Amazing, but basically useless one-trick ponies.

When I try to explain the difference to people, I tend to describe Austria as being like germany, but perhaps somewhat more gloriously insane, less weird porn, and more prominent baroque architecture (per unit land area, at least).

:P

True, true. And much more laid back. And the language - your President isn't the only one who believes that we actually don't speak german.

Oh that is true. I did forget differences in the sense of humor.
Austria: Bit more whimsical. Archery Skeet with Trebuchets, taking provocative photos of self in roman brothel museum.
Germany: Dry, tendency toward dead-pan, often dark. "The security system will beep at you and say 'you have fifteen seconds until laser-punishment if you do not comply' ". Hidden double meaning inside a conversation to the effect of "I might invade Poland while renewing my visa"

That's the thing you notice when watching German Comedians. (Yes, they do exist). Austria has a long tradition of cabaret/stand-up, and our humor is exceptionally dark and often morbid, but the punchline is always delivered with some finesse.
German comedy punches you in the face with it right from the first spoken word, and usually relys on acting like a retard - we call that blunt humor.

Note: this is true of most german televised "comedy". There is a reason why younger people in Germany refer to our privately owned TV networks as "under-class TV". Great cabaret is either only on stage or (rarely) shown on public TV.
