What's your take on the fall of the Roman Empire in a nut shell? I'm a student of history as well. I am completing my master's degree in May and am currently in the process of applying for graduate schools. My interest, however, is in more modern American history, particularly the history of American religion.

I'm actually new here as well; I have a seven month old daughter and husband who is known around here as Surlethe.

Hi, I'm sexyloser. I live in minneapolis, MN. I've been a Star Wars fan as long as I can remember. It has taught me more about sacrifice, duty, honor and compassion than any other thing. It continues to inspire me on multiple levels.

Ok...It's kinda weird that a ficitional story can teach you more about compassion than real life.

Hi, I'm Shaun. I'm an engineering student (mechanical) from the UK. Eugh, this is starting to sound like a lonely hearts add. I'll finish by saying that Science Fiction isn't of any particular interest to me; however, I've been an avid reader of this forum's debating sections for many months now. Crackingly high standard of posts here. I'm young and impressionable and sometimes (often) need to have my head smacked against a wall in order to knock some sense into me. Reading this forum fulfils this need, less painfully.

I won't say we'll be gentle, but I will say you'll learn to either grow a thicker skin or run away. ADHD is almost common amongst board members, I think.

The fragile ego will be your biggest issue, promise. We break lots of egos but this board is frankly possibly the most trans-friendly message board on the internet that isn't explicitly for transpeople.

Well this is how I see stories and storytelling. I can only talk about how Star Wars and by extension storytelling has had an effect on my life. I feel that when you see something you relate to, a story you relate to you feel less lonely in this world. And that stories can inspire, mobilize and make people aspire. That stories have real power. Not the traditional sense of power e.g. power over another person but from the creative connection that exists between people.

I get my inspiration from reading the exploits of these larger than life epic characters. But I don't allow myself to fall in the fallacy that these characters can really rescue me. I mean who wouldn't want a Obi Wan or R2D2 to come and rescue them. But they can't of course because they're fictional, they're not real. But what they can do is help us rescue ourselves.

Ultimately stories make us better people and that without stories it would be a flat society.

I've already had some rumbles with Mr Friendly Guy, over a matter that I don't think either of us actually disagree with.

Hello. I'm here, just looking around and reading fanfiction in it's own forum. Good stuff, full of scifi and other cool stuff. Might try my hand at writing a bit, and see where that goes. I don't do introduction posts real well, but maybe this isn't nearly as awkward as it feels. I don't plan to post a lot, so a post by me will be a rare thing. Looking forward to whatever...

I am Cartesiantheater, I'm a physics student.

I enjoy humor of all kind, including nerd jokes.

I attempted to start a thread that would appear to be a troll thread in off topic ("Anything goes") but in fact it is simply a nerdy joke... Or is it?

If it is deleted I can only surmise that either the mod who deleted it didn't get it or that making joke threads is not permitted in the off topic section.

Anyway, other than that, I love American football, I really get a kick out of Glenn Beck (and Jon Stewart's impression was gold), I tend to be both amused and dismayed at the general lack of knowledge among American citizens about things like the House and Senate Heath care bills, etc.

Did I say that I enjoy humor of all kinds?

New users need to have the first few posts approved. That helps cut down on spammers. We don't appreciate new people starting out trolling or looking like it. Anybody who has spent any time here should know that. It's actually this intro post of yours that saves you from an automatic banning, since the first (disapproved) post by itself would have earned you one.

Just make sure you don't screw up again, because this intro thread by itself is another screwup, given how we have a sticky thread for new intros. You're not looking too good right now.

Hi there, SDN. I've made numerous posts and replies, but never got around to posting in here (read: I completely missed the sticky) so I'll do it now.

I'm Highlord Laan. Yes, the name and the avatar brands me as a sorrowful Hellgate: London fan, but I'll not make any excuses there. I was drawn here after reading political commentary that showed up after a google search, and decided to join after the Palladium "Sound Off" forum went hilariously to the knuckle-dragging extreme of the political right, while somehow getting even thinner skinned.

Anyway, while I haven't exactly covered myself with glory in the posts I've made so far, I try to keep my occasional bouts of randomness and o_0 moments in check.

I'm a general WoW/D&D/Rifts nerd at heart stuck working at Burger King after getting "permanently laid off" from my last job for having the gall to claim workmans comp in Nebraska, so my posts will likely swing from generally good tempered and kooky to cynical sarcasm and hostility. I try to stay more towards the former.

I apologize. As it was, I recall that I actually did attempt to post in the stickied new member thread. However, apparently I made a mistake. In fact, what is most likely is I probably accidentally clicked the "new topic" button rather than the "reply" button, while actually looking at the thread. Merely my lack of familiarity with the way the forum is designed. Won't happen again.

If it is not too much trouble please merge this with the stickied thread, as my original intention was to post this there (again, I was looking at that thread and instead of hitting "reply" I hit "new topic"). Also, feel free to delete everything but the introduction, if you believe that would be appropriate.

* as far as the "troll" thread, the mathematical statement was accurate. 4! is obviously the factorial of 4, which is of course is not equal to 2 plus 2. Merely my attempt at breaking the ice with humor.

Right, here goes.... *deep breath*

I'm UnderAGreySky, in my 20s, living in (from my username, where else!) but Her Majesty's United Kingdom. However, I'm Indian - convenience store, not casino (and I would have said dot, not feather but only the women wear dots on their foreheads) - and I've just finished my masters here, job hunting now while working on an internship.

Came across SDN via the tboverse (introduced to me by a member of this forum, I'm registered under the same username at tboverse.us) which led me to Armageddon???!!! when there was an unusually long lull in TBO stories while it was still on EZBoard/Yuck-u. Stayed here for good, enjoy reading Stuart's work and have become an absolute fan of Bladed Crescent's fiction. Easily one of the best writers around, IMO. Kinda sad the Children of Heaven got pulled, but I'll be damned if I don't buy the book when it comes out (and it better..)!

Looking to dip my toes into the waters of SLAM and N&P and expect to be around here for a while. :)

Funny Jokes. :)

Life After Death
A boss asked one of his employees, "Do you believe in life after death?"
"Yes, sir," replied the new employee. "I thought you would," said the boss. "Yesterday after you left to go to your grandmother's funeral, she stopped in to see you!"

Support a Family
The prospective son-in-law was asked by his girl friend's father, "Son, can you support a family?"
"Well, no, sir," he replied. "I was just planning to support your daughter. The rest of you have to fend for yourselves."

The Water Pistol
My five year old son squealed with delight when he opened his birthday present from his grandmother. It was a water pistol. He promptly ran to the sink to fill it.

"Mom," I said. I'm surprised at you. "Don't you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water pistols?" My mom smiled and said, "Yes, I remember."

Hello!

My real name is Jacob and my username is a play on words (think LOTR). I'm a student in the U.S. who has had an interest in fantasy and science fiction for a few years now and who likes discussing things on the internet. Some of the first stories I got into were The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, and as a fan of the latter this site interests me. :)

Hello everyone, I'm FDW. I'm an Anime, Alternate History, Gender Bender, and Mass-Transit Fan, I'm also active on two other forum www.alternatehistory.com, and forums.animesuki.com. I've written a few short piece's of stuff on the first site I mentioned, (Alternatehistory.com) that I'll post here once they get fleshed out some more. I first came to this site for Stuart's Armageddon series, and started lurking due to the all around awesome of the Fanfic section, while I don't intend on being too active, I will drop by regularly to see what's going on.

Hello StarDestroyer.Net,

I'm honestly not a major Star Trek or Star Wars fanatic (although I did like the new Star Trek movie as well as some of the Star Wars movies, particularly RotS and RotJ), but I do consider myself to be fairly nerdy (I have Asperger's Syndrome), so I thought this would be a decent place to hang out. My interests include dinosaurs and other prehistoric life, ancient history, writing, and drawing.

BTW, my username refers to the fictional tyrannosaurid species created for Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong, which is among my favorite movies.
