Probably only Thanas will care, but I've seen it in HD today. Should have spent $80 on it rather than that horrible production of "Faust" I saw two weeks ago. I am usually leery of Met Original productions (look here if you're wondering why), but I was genuinely pleasantly surprised. Probably not the best thing to go to if you're a purist, but holy shit was it hilarious and awesome. Danielle de Niese is usually not leading lady material, but she was perfect for the role and absolutely stole the show, mostly because she's actually a pretty good actress and her libretto literally had the audience roaring with laughter.
But not here, obviously.


Other bits include Joyce DiDonato as Sycorax

and David Daniels (a countertenor as Prospero? WTF?)


Of course, this being the Met, the sets and costumes are the real stars of the show. In this case, they get to use that new shiny screen they bought, creating a laterna magica-kind of feel with all the projections.


Thats video projected on the back screen, a physical ship (with singers on it) sinking under moving waves, with rain projected in front on a transparent screen while the spinning cogs and gears are likewise projected.

ANYWAY RE: OP

The Met sometimes broadcasts their shows in HD to theatres all over NA. I saw Tristan und Isolde year before last, IIRC. It was pretty good, I enjoyed being able to see a production from a major opera company without leaving my city. Not saying Edomonton Opera is bad, but it can't really compare with the Met and others.

Yes, I know. That's how I've seen the Enchanted Island. I've seen Faust in person a few weeks ago, but I can't really afford to go to every production, what with even cheap shitty seats costing upwards of $80.

Ah, sorry. It is a great service though, isn't it? I wish more performances could take advantage of it. Not just opera: but the big ballet companies, things like the Shanghai circus, plays, symphonies, and so on.

Cheap, yes. Seats no. You pay that to stand in the back, or for the tiny number of seats they raffle off. A Live in HD ticket costs the same, and you can actually see what's going on stage.

Oh no doubt about that. I'd rather watch from the comfort of a bucket seat anyday. Do they subtitle those things? The tiny screens at the Met are great but hard to read while watching the action.
