Whine whine. A couple years ago, my local theater retrofitted virtually all of the screens it had with a RWC system

RWC Screen

Suddenly, I could fucking have a good chance of watching first run movies. Then about six months to a year ago; the theater for some completely bizarre reason, removed RWC capability from all but one screen.

Now; I don't watch movies no more; because it's now impossible to find a movie.

Link to Regal Cinemas OC/RWC Page

This week; the movies in my city (Rockville/Silver Spring) which are Open Captioned (OC) or Rear Window Captioned (RWC) are......

The Karate Kid and Grown Ups.

No fucking thanks.

If I want to see Toy Story 3; it's a minimal 30-45 minute drive to get to Columbia or Frederick. I'm interested in TS3; but not that interested.
I'll be the first to agree with you that that fucking sucks. As I understand it, that technology shouldn't be that expensive and is easily installed in an existing theater.

But of course the theater chains are fucking retards, which is why they are losing money.

Never seen anybody clap in a british cinema, theatre / shows sure, but why clap in a cinema?? I have seen US audience's clap on a dodgy copy I saw of Chronicles Of Riddick, it was rather odd and amusing :P

I don't see it in Australia either. The only audience response I usually hear is laughter, which is fair enough, as that's a spontaneous reaction to something funny. Why the hell would you clap or boo or enunciate anything in a cinema? It's not like the performers or producers are there to receive it.

Just to give a response. It can be bad: I had a friend who's viewing of Iron Man was ruined because some shithead kids acted up during the entire movie.

In my experience, it's more at certain scenes that it will happen, albeit even then it's pretty rare in my experience. The last time I remember any clapping or such was during Revenge of the Sith and that was in response to Yoda pwning the two Royal Guardsmen. That got a bit of a clap/cheer from the audience.

Those kinds of moments are still pretty rare. I can't really recall any clapping at the end of a movie, though.

Agreed. Never seen anything other than laughter.

But I've seen clips where cinema audiences cheer at something in docos and stuff. Maybe it's an American thing?

Although, American's also had this reaction:

A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

The only time I heard a reaction like that in the cinema was at the start of the Phantom Menace when the SW logo popped up on the screen. Half the audience spontaneously cheered. I guess waiting 16 years does that to people.

That didn't happen again during any remaining part of the film though, most certainly not during the credits. :D

I have been subjected to on a regular basis:
  • - People talking (to each other and at the screen);
    - People who eat like Jabba the Hutt after a week without food and drink;
    - People who are so stupid they can't realize that they can get to the main aisle the other way, and thus constantly are trying to get by you, forcing you to get up.
    - Excessive laughing, clapping, etc. (and I mean often and when no one else is doing it);
    - People coming in sounding like they're on death's door, loudly hacking and making a cacophony of other grotesque noises through the movie;
    - People bringing young kids who are get bored, can't sit still, talk incessantly, get scared easily and cry, run around the theater and annoy everyone, etc.;
    - People who bring babies who cry incessantly;
Some notables:

Star Trek Generations: Dark Staresque Trektard replete with Cheetos stained t-shirt who wouldn't stop talking to his partner about all things Trek, yet wrong about most of it. Also loudly commented on and talked to the characters of the movie. Memorable line: Goodbye Lursa and B'Etor, goodbye! (Said repeatedly at their deaths).

Mortal Combat: Luckily I had already seen it, but I had gone with someone to the dollar theater to catch it again. The whole theater was full of the lowest forms of life, all acting like idiots. But particularly memorable was a little hyperactive kid who didn't even watch the movie (mainly talked), just got up and jumped into the aisle during the fight scenes and proceeded to do his combat routine. So as you might guess, this happened a lot.

Comparatively rarer, perhaps? :)

I suspect it may be a case that cinemas over here tend to be on the expensive side (all of the chains around here tend to charge £7.50 minimum, with the rare mini-chain exception)

In my experience (I tend to go three/four times a month) People tend to laugh at the comedies and gasp at the thrillers/horrors, but only in the places where'd you'd expect it. None of that throwing things/shouting malarkey. And this is Grockal territory, and they arnt known for their manners.

Edit: By the way, does anyone remember having this EXACT same conversation about cinema manners within the last two years? Bloody deja vu...

I never really considered clapping to be a bad thing. I only mentioned it because of my recent viewing of 'The Karate Kid' remake (which is actually pretty decent), the audience I saw it with loved the shit out of it, everyone kept clapping and cheering throughout the tournament, which didn't really distract me.

Also thinking back to 'The Dark Knight', moments like:
Gordon turning out to be alive got an applause.
Batman motorcycle turn off the wall got an applause.
And when the movie ended people clapped.

Wanted's "Fuck you" message with the keyboard.

I almost forgot about Kick-Ass, a lot of moments during that movie deserved some kind of reaction if not just laughter and holy shit.

Ending of Avatar (meh).

I never saw Marley and Me in theaters, but apparently that caused some tears in theaters (maybe scream kids). I waited for it to come on HBO because there was no way I was gonna see a movie with a dog that dies at the end on Christmas.

My only bad experiences were:
A minute long sssshhing fight that took place during 'Iron Man' 1.
Another sssshhhhing fight during 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.
Someone that was mentally handicapped kept moaning during Ninja Assassin.
Crying kid during 'Max Payne'.

And a few more all of which were negligible.

The worst was watching 'Half Blood Prince' with some friends.
- Yelled out where's the scar a few times during the movie.
- Clapped when Dumbledore died.
- Pointed a lazer at the movie screen.

That I can complain about.

It's really not a big deal.

Whiplash wrote:Dude its called HBO, Cinemax (plays the same movies as HBO, just comes with more porn at night), Showtime, and Starz. You'll get every major release (and some minors) 1 year after its put into theaters from EVERY studio (with the exception of Paramount at the moment).
HBO = WB, FOX, Universal, Dreamworks, and more.
Showtime = Lionsgate and a few others, I just can't think of them.
Starz = Disney, Columbia Pictures, Summit, and more.

Though you're on your own with the subtitles (do you really need them THAT much).
Except that you have to wait a year, and can't pause and shit. Sure DVDs and On Demand sometimes are available in as little as 90 days, but there's no reason it can't be set up to have a recently produced movie available. I would probably pay the same fee to see a recently released movie at home, and end up paying to see a lot more of them than I do now if they offered this.
You can if you use their on demand services (which come free with it)
Temujin wrote:I also think movie theaters are going to see a crunch in the coming years, and as more stuff becomes essentially downloadable / on demand, so will the traditional movie channels, not to mention crap channels that play heavily edited and censored movies.
Watching 'Superbad' on cable almost made me cry. I can't wait to see how they butcher 'The Hangover' (until then I'll just enjoy it on HBO).

OK, hope springs eternal (I hope ;)):
So it seems we all (thankfully) got a bit ahead of ourselves. The James Bond franchise is apparently going nowhere (you can interpret that both ways). An insider source has spoken to Deadline and claims that all the overzealous reports of 007’s demise were premature and that MGM still has intentions of making the third film in the rebooted franchise. Obviously there’s the minor detail of their woeful financial situation, but even if they were to go under, producers and rights-owners EON could easily find another home for Bond at Sony, Fox or Warner Bros. More info after the jump.
More importantly, news is circling the web that Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes are willing to wait for the project. Good news for any fan, and hopefully it means they have such strong faith in the project already they’re willing to stay on board.

MGM aren’t going to be in any position to make announcements until Q4 this year and even then The Hobbit will more than likely be their first priority, especially with the time sensitive talks with Peter Jackson. Overall, this is good news and hopefully we’ll be seeing DC in a tuxedo once more in 2012, maybe.

Glad to hear we may be getting another Bond after all. I liked Craig as Bond, even if Quantum of Solace was pretty underwhelming compared to Casino Royale as far as I was concerned.
