Most people in reading knew him as Hat Man, always wore that hat.

I realise I'm late posting to this, the problems with working abroad.
I never met John, and only know him from conversing with him by E-mail and on ASVS, but below are my recollections of him.
For those that never met John online at ASVS, he was an occassional poster, mainly restricting himself to STGOD's (He ran the Terran Alliance [TTA] during STGOD 1, and though the faction was small and Under-powered it was featured in most DTGOD's because of it's allegiances with larger powers) he did however try to bring facts to debates where he felt them needed.
His Username of Austin Sweevo came about from two sources; At school his PE teacher refered to him as Austin (After Austin Healey the Rugby Player), and the computer character Sweevo the Robot - from the Spectrum game Sweevo's world.
He always seemed a nice and funny guy, and it's a tragedy that his life be lost to an accident at such a young age.
My condolences to his family and friends in this tragic time and he will be missed.

He actually ran the Terran Trade Authority. As I recall, it had a couple of planets in the middle of UTR space, one of which was Proxima Centauri.
The posts are in the Archive's TGOD section, by the way. Not sure which compilation they're in, it should probably be around 2001.

My deepest condolences...
I never talked to him, but it seems as though he was cared for by many people, online, and "in real life"

This is what happens when I post from memory, I knew it was TTA, but got it into my head that it was The Terran Alliance. Still he did well with that small territory (Barely 2 systems) allied and acting as an Autonomous Protectorate of the New Rebellion, and almost the same deal with SKS, and trade relations with Earth and diplomatic relations with many others. NOt bad going at all. He'll definitely be missed.
For those looking for his STGOD posts, the first TTA posts were made as Chimaera, and would probably be about the beginning of 2001.

Shit. I didn't know him so I'm not really qualified to say anything, but my condolences to his friends and family. I hope that if there is an afterlife that he has found peace in it.

I remember the thread where everyone was posting a pic of themselves. The pics he posted were rather interesting so I sketched out a few. It will be quite eerie to find those in my notebooks again. My condolences however, he seemed like a rather cool individual.

Obviously I didn't know him. He sounds like a great guy. I am sorry to hear this, and even sorrier to have never known him. May his soul find peace (and may the members not take offense at a Christian praying for him).

With each to his own belief we can only honor him to the best of our abilities. No one should take offense at this for your honor him in the greatest and most sincere way you know how and that is the most anyone could ever ask.
For John's memory.

It almost doesn't seem possible, the inhumanity of a forum, but people who actually post here exist and can die.
This is sobering.
My condolences to his family and friends.

I read some of his posts. R.I.P.
This is the second time someone I've seen online meets with an unfortunate fate. (First time was on USENET).

So very sad. While I never knew John personally, it is always sad to see a respected denzien of SD.net pass before their time. My condolences to the family, and may you rest in peace, John.

This hopefully does not sound rude, but the last post in this thread was two months ago. Time for addition to "All the lonely stickies..."?

Farewell, John. I'm de-stickifying this thread because it has been quite some time since this tragedy occurred, and while the loss has not changed, there really isn't anything else we can say. I hope his family is doing OK.

Hate to bump this, but I've been thinking of using John's alter ego
Austin Sweevo in a fanfic of mine in a prominent position in
the story; probably the best way I can pay tribute to the guy, even
though I really didn't know him that well; is this respectful or is it
just in bad taste?
