*Sighs* He's been a friend since we first conversed on nutty stuff together in the early 1999 - 2000 ASVS days. A genuinely respectful person who I couldn't stay close to over the years, but I always regretted it. Well, there was nothing more to be done, and I still feel it so very cruel that he ended up in the position he was in. Universal healthcare didn't come soon enough for Colin, and we should remember through him why it is so important to fight for.

That's a shame. Hope it was, indeed, painless and in his sleep.

(A few days ago in the venting thread he was complaining about a spider bite. Hope that this wasn't complications from that.)

Rest in peace. You will be missed, a truly unique personality who never seemed to lose his cool with anyone.

For a healthy person? Unlikely. On the other hand, I dont know all of his medical issues. Depending on the spider, the venom can cause clotting problems that in someone with a compromised cardiovascular system can be dangerous in the sense of the straw that breaks a camel's back.

That said, it may have been monday night. His sister posted about his death on Wednesday. I assumed he died Tuesday night, but I could have been mistaken.

He was talking about how he had no feeling in the right side of his body. I'm no medical professional, but that sounds kind of dangerous.

Damn. Don't know what to say. I really liked Bear.
He's one of the people I have met on this board that I had hoped to meet one day and share a beer with and nerd out over whatever struck our fancy. Even if it probably would have made absolutely no fucking sense.

Man, I'll miss ya buddy. I hope whatever may be out there for us treats you well.

Holy Shit. That is not a heart attack, or if it was, he had other bad shit going on and the heart attack was the immediate cause of death. That is a symptom of an Ischemic Stroke in his left hemisphere (and not many things cause paralysis or loss of feeling on one half of the body), which, if the cause of death was a myocardial infarction, would mean he was throwing clots all over the place.

Note: I am not that kind of doctor, and wont be any kind for another 10-12 months, but I analyze bad things in order to cope.

That's from Monday in the Healthcare Vents thread, 6:43 PM my time, so would have been close to midday there. I remember seeing it briefly at work, but had no time to post anything, then forgot about it. I have a vague recollection of having a bad feeling when I read it. I knew his health had been on the fritz for a long time, but if he did have some kind of poisoning working on his system in addition to everything else that was out of whack, it is not so surprising.

Might be he did not go see a doctor, went to sleep and never woke up. If he died on the 25th, and of a heart attack during the night, then it would have been about 12+ hours after that post.

Absolutely tragic, he will be missed; I was never as close to him as I ought to have been but his posts were often illuminating and always welcome.

I know spider bites broadly speaking aren't going to do much to a healthy person, but I seem to recall doctor friends of mine saying that one reason spiders can be so scary is that, for an unhealthy person, spider venom (or, in fact, infections to spider bites that aren't the result of the venom itself) can be surprisingly unpredictable. Of course, this is just a vaguely recalled statement that might not even be accurate.

In any case, I never really interacted with Yosemite Bear, but I have read plenty of his posts (going back to the days when I was just a lurker 'round these parts) and always enjoyed his contributions to the board. I very much hope that whatever health problems he was having, which are obviously none of my business, did not cause him serious discomfort towards the end.

I never knew Bear. I saw his posts I rarely responded but he's been around forever. And now he's not.
I wish I could say more at his passing but all I can offer is my own meager condolences to his family.
