[VOTED] Christian Usergroup

Post by Rob Wilson »

It's been suggested we have a new Private Usergroup for any christians on the board. A Moderator has already shown willingness to mod such a Group.

It's purview will be as somewhere to talk about issues of Christianity and as a support group should it be needed.

The reason given for its creation is that any discussion about those topics in SLAM or elsewhere would quickly get derailed.

To counter the obvious knee-jerk response 'well we should have an Atheist/Agnostic group as well', this entire board could be seen as such. :P

The Poll runs for 2 days or until everyone has voted; So Senate members, vote away.

Yes, there should be one. People should be able to discuss matters of their faith without half of every such thread being posts that amount to nothing but "Yous iz stupid to have relidgzion!" or equivalent.

Yes, religion is irrational, but if people of like faith wish to talk about it inside the framework of its beliefs, I say let them. We can also get rid of the accusations of this board being anti-Christian and persecuting Christians (as has been claimed on some occasions).

Personally, I think that a lot of jackasses will make that charge anyway; some people simply choose to see bias and persecution everywhere they look. But still, I see no reason to object to this idea, so why not?

Sure. We have plenty of religious members on the board, some who are morons, others with a great deal of intelligence.

If said board allows them to breathe a sigh to display such, great. Also this will prevent a great deal of the me-tooers from leaping in like howler monkeys.

Oh, I'm not going to dispute that. But they'll be looking mighty stupid when they do try to do that, which is more likely to lead others who might otherwise believe them to form their own opinion.

A no vote on my part. We don't need it anymore than we need an Agnostic group or Jewish group.

The private or seperate forums serve a purpose to meet the needs of the smaller groups. Such as the Mecha adicts or are simply not fit for general viewage like the Cafe.

Nevermind I have to raise the question... which kind of Christianity group is it going to be? You can't tell me there is some serious, prehaps violent diffrences between say... Catholics, Protestant and Mormons.

I don’t see why Christians should specifically get a usergroup, but I don't really care, its not going to affect me or how I use this place.

I don't see why not. Naturally, other relgions will get their own groups if they want then I imagine.

Here's a question though: How will the forum be handled in terms of the opinions nad viewpoints expressed in it? I know that its a private group, but religion tends to be one of the more.. explosive.. topics on SD.net, and it worries me that something might be said in private that gets out and cuases trouble...

As long as the forum isn't used to promote or organize preaching to the rest of the board, there's no real opposition.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

The Mod of the Group will ensure it's not a rallying point for attacks/proselitising the board, though I doubt it would be.

I don't like setting a precedent for every faith possibly having its own forum. It sections people off into their own little comfort zones and discourages posting in SLAM. This, in turn, discourages criticisms of those ideas.

Now, granted, Christians have it a bit harder here because of the deluge of me-tooers that tend to descend on any Christianity-related thread. So I can see the rationale for giving them their own forum.

I'll abstain from this one.

While I probably would post on such a forum I also hold that such discussion rightfully belongs in SLAM. The argument that SLAM has the tendency to jump on pro-Christianity posts is a matter that I think should require a few persons or perhaps the mod of SLAM reminding everyone that me-tooing is frowned upon regardless of the topic.

That, in addition to the precedent having a faith-specific usergroup, is why I'm voting no.

I don't think Christian specific, but certainly a bit of a haven for the religiosuly minded and those who wish to discuss articles of faith without it getting driven off the road.

For any who would object, I point out we had a usergroup for freaking garden gnomes.

I tend to agree with the sentiment that a lot of discussion that might go on in this new usergroup is already duplicated in SLAM, the potential for de-railing by "look at me im cool cuz i can go OMG, T3H CHRISTIANS R EVIL LOL" me-tooers aside. It would serve to stifle some of the lively discourse and productive discussion that does come out of SLAM.

There's also the precedent of establishing private groups for every religious group out there . . . and Christianity itself isn't a monolithic block

For that, I'm voting "No."

I vote no. Specifically because it's 'Christian' forum rather than a religious one. I'm not a big visitor to the SLAM forum, but I can that the abstance of posts from there to the new usergroup would put quite a crimp in SLAM.

Perhaps if it were all inclusive, rather than just Christians, I would be warmer to the idea. A Faith Based Forum, I suppose.

I think the most important issue for this is the interest of the actual board population. With this as the criterion, it doesn't think it would form a precedent for any faith (as Mr. Sorresso is concerned with), unless one is concerned with equality regardless of reality. As for the possible lack of cricitism of ideas, if the participants do not want it and keep their ideas private, why should anyone force it on them?

Additionally, I propose that an affirmative vote on this poll is insufficient--a follow-up a general poll should follow. After all, it would not do to create a private forum if it won't get much actual participation.
