Automated Thread Necromancy Prevention suggestion

Post by Ted C »

BountyHunterSAx sent me a PM proposing a modification to the BBS. I don't know if he knows how to program such a thing or not, but he basically suggested a solution to "thread necromancy".

Since the usual Admin response to thread necromancy is to lock the thread, he suggests a modification to the BBS code that would automatically lock any thread that goes more than 60 days without a new post.

I submit his idea to the Senate for discussion.

"This is not bad; this is a conspiracy to remove happiness from existence. It seeks to wrap its hedgehog hand around the still beating heart of the personification of good and squeeze until it is stilled."

No, I dont think it's neccesary. It adds more scripts to the server, it doesnt really gain us a damn thing and, sometimes, very rarely I'll admit, people have revived thread to make valid points or add new information or updates.

We don’t need old threads locked, if we could get a program that simply keeps them from bouncing back to the top of the forum after 60 days that might be more useful but even then it might negatively affect fanfics and roleplaying related threads

NEcromancy is not a widespread enough problem from what I have seen that it would require automation.

Summary action by the moderators and administrators appears to be an adequate solution. This senator moves the previous question.

That's unacceptable, because I normally update fanfiction threads with new story posts at longer than 60-day intervals. And necromancy is NOT a serious enough problem to make me start a new thread for every single chapter AND cause massive changes in the board software.

besides If someone had an update on Chris, Mike wanted to show off some new puppy pics in AMP, or say someone posted wedding pics in a thread about their engagement, well then that's not exactly necromancy is it?

I also update stories I haven't worked on for longer than sixty days. And I completely agree with Marina, necromancy is a very minor problem.

I have received a message from a humble plebe, indicating that 60 days would be a problem for him as well.

Not that my opinion matters to the doings of the mighty Senate, but I go way the hell longer than 60 days between fiction updates as well. In fact, I think just about all the fanfic authors on the board would have problems with that.

Let's be honest. I am the number one moderator that gets annoyed by Necromancy, but it is something that is completely case by case. If people would fucking read and look at the dates it solves this problem, unless they figure they truly bring something new to the debate of the topic at hand. Having an automated system would fuck up nearly every fanfic.

The idea of automation is unacceptable and far too much hassle on posters then any meager worth it brings.

Thread necromancy is definitely something that has to be taken on a case-by-case basis. An automated solution likely wouldn't handle it effectively.

The motion has been made to the previous question :D

Anyway if there is no statement in support of an alteration I am going to declare the matter closed.
