Supporting religion

Post by Yogi »

Would you donate money to a religious charaty (like Salvation Army) despite the fact that it's indirectly supporting religion?

It depends. for a good cause, yes. To subside the internal mechanism of a particular church, no.

Considering that I don't donate to real charities, I'd be hard-pressed to think of a reason to donate to religious charities.

I give to the Salvation Army people in front of stores every year. At least a buck or two.

I've donated articles of clothing and furniture to the Salvation Army in the past. If I think it's going to help people, I'll donate. If I think it's going to be used to build a fancy new church building, I won't donate.

I donate clothing and articles of furniture...money no because it never goes to anyone and hell most charities the workers get first dips on anything before the people they are trying to help do.

I don't donate to charities at all. I am particularly irritated when there are a team of charity sponsored vultures hovering around train stations collecting money in tins. Like there are almost every day when I go to work.

The worst part is when they make it nearly compulsory for students to do that sort of shit. It's either that, or plenty of home visits to make up your community service hours.

i dont have enough money to donate. i give money to bums though if they walk up to me and say something like:
can you give me a euro, i´m freezing cold and i´m so hungry too.
i usually see them 10 minutes later with a can of beer in their hands. the thing that pisses me off about that is that they buy the beer at the gas station where they pay 1.59 EURO for half a liter of beer instead of going to the next supermarket where they´d pay 49 cents.

You'd think if they ahd so little money they'd find smarter ways to spend it.

Sure. The Church has always done charitable work and it's not logical to condemn that because of its nastier aspects. It's proper to vette the particular fund/organization you're giving to - But you'd do that with any charity.

I've donated clothes and furniture to the Salvation Army. I haven't donated money to that particular organization before though.

I would do so only if I was sure the donated stuff would go to actually helping people. And if I was sure that there wasn't a better organization to donate to.

Ah yes creative accounting. Kind of like the time the topless cheerleaders were "donated" money to come to Bill's bachelor party and it was listed as a donation to "The March of Dames."

Nope, too many secular charities to waste my money on religious ones.

I never knew that the Salvation Army indirectly supported religion. I never donat money anyway, though, so it doesn't matter. I always donate clothes, furniture, and stuff I don't use anymore.

The only charity I respect is ESB's charity of the Empty Pocket. Donate to day to secure a place in the Hew Order tomorrow. :D
