I was actually lurking there and reading that thread... I wondered how long it would take you to bring it up here. :D

Should I take that as insult?

Anyway, we obviously need more people than just me to convince this guy of his errors.

No no, not an insult. Just an observation is all.

He thinks that self-replicating nanotech=ability to build anything at little to no cost, regardless of scale.

And he was saying that in favor of Death Star construction by the Feds?

It's really no different than the Trekkie starship-replicator myth, or the replicator-based defense of communism (you wouldn't believe how many idiots E-mail me saying that communism would work in Trek because replicators make all work obsolete).

Another thing you could point out (I'm only on page 5, so you may have mentioned this) is that his asteroid won't be big enough to build a Death Star, and most likely won't contain the exotic elements necessary to build the weapons components. Carbon, nickel, iron, and magnesium don't have a whole lot of use in superlaser technology.

Oops, never mind, just read FleetAdmiral's post on page 6. Although I would still ask where he's planning on getting those materials from, considering that replicators have a hard time with certain quantum combinations (as shown by the inability to replicate, oh, DILITHIUM).

And I have no idea how he thinks building something one atom at a time is quicker than refining a metal, molding it, and transporting it where it needs to go in bulk (since we know ISDs are not huge ships, and a cargo ship that size would be able to haul...I don't know, two or three megacraploads of stuff?).

Meh, nomatter what anyone of us say it's not going to get through.
Therefore I'll be e-mailing actual scientists working on nano-tech.
