Christianity Versus Roleplaying

Post by CrimsonRaine »

I've never understood this one. I don't remember the Catholics having problems with roleplaying, specifically AD&D or White Wolf, but I have heard of other Protestant religions (Jehovah's Witnesses, Methodists, Baptists, and Church of Christ) would be happy to burn books.

Why? *scratches head*

As one JW acquaintance says, it's all "occult". And anything "occult" is prohibited by the Bible's condemnation of witchcraft.

It strikes me mostly as ignorance. AD&D has magic, demons, and devils in it. That immediately incites the religious/ignorant.

It always amused me that people were so militantly against what amounted to a handful of guys sitting in a basement, drinking Mt. Dew, and hanging out.

as far as the fundies are concerned, if it it deals with magic, it's bad and is obviously satanic. meh.

Yeah, it's funny how many times certain religions throw fits about it, when most parties I've gamed with are FIGHTING the Demons and 'forces of Evil'.

I guess the question is then: what makes something "occult?" That a lot of people like to do it?

I'm a confirmed Catholic, and yes, many Catholics, including my mother thought Dungeons and Dragons was "Evil" because it advocated paganism and occult.

i believe the common perception is that if it's anything that has to do with the supernatural or 'idolizing' the supernatural that isn't the magic sky pixie in any way shape or form it's considered occult. i may be wrong in this though.

That just about covers it.

Althought it's also the idea of Wizards Casting (evil) Spells Against Their Enemies. Funny I don't hear that much about the fighters beating the crap out of Enemies.......
There's also the whole thing about role-play itself, becoming someone other than who you are.

Have you ever seen a pentecostal service? They have a "role playing" game all of their own. They don't like the competition.

There are games like White Wolfs' World of Darkness, and though a few do go too far, for the most part all the roleplayers I have ever met just wanted to have a good time. Most people who strike me as being upset about roleplaying seem to know absolutely nothing about it.

Jesus, man, that's the goddamn point of it. Some people roleplay because it's fun, some people roleplay because they're creative geeks, but almost all people roleplay for escapism. Didn't any of these fundies play "Tea Party" when they were a kid? That's roleplaying, my cross-carrying friends. (which of course, is not directed towards any one here). :D

Because they realised that role players would get more satisfaction out of the D&D gods, thereby proving the dark secret of the magic sky pixie.....

As far as I know, some Christians oppose fantasy role-playing games, and the whole genre for that matter, because they promote a non-Christian cosmology.

As fiction. The vast majority of us know that its not a real religion and that D&D players don't worship their characters' "deities" in the course of play, but there's no need to make a big deal out of something that isn't perceived as a threat, so those who are dumb enough to think its real (or to think that we [players] think its real) are far louder even though they're also a far smaller group.

Well, living your life as a Christian is basically just another form of "roleplaying," complete with good, evil, psychodrama, etc. I'm telling you, the don't want the competition of another role playing game.

the definition of occult literately is 'that which is hidden'. the occut world is elusive, mysterious and to many unnatainable and wonderful. the ultimate escape.
