you might wind up disappointed. from my understanding (and this is very basic), the erect phallus in shinto, afaik, represents someone's willingness to prevent sexual stimulation and focus their built up sexual energies towards other goals.

Well, actually, for a man, I agree quite a bit with <some> japanese views on sex. For instance there's the idea that if the woman doesn't have an orgasm, that there just isn't a point to the sex at all. Hence the name for man on man porn in japan is... oddly enough, an acronym that means (not verbatim) "no orgasm, what's the point?"
