Links to news threads about religious problems

Postby Darth Wong » 2009-05-20 12:04pm

This thread is meant to contain links to threads on this forum where religion-related news stories have been discussed.

A thread about a teacher being sued for denouncing creationism. Noteworthy because it includes the revelation that US courts have ruled that government employees may not express opinions hostile to religion, even though they appear to be allowed to express opinions favourable to religion:

Is the "pope sets up exorcism squads" accurate? I remember reading a follow up article where the papacy denounced the preist who made the announcement and stated that was no the Pope's plan.

The second is about the Italian police forming a special unit to deal with:
Italian police want to set up a special unit to tackle the growth of new religious sects, particularly a violent new breed of home-grown Satanists.

Given that Reuters actually reported that the Pope showed up at an exorcism conference, and that the Vatican even updated its instructions for exorcisms in 1999, I see no reason to doubt it, unless you've got some kind of source to reference.

PS. I believe the Vatican's head exorcist is a guy named Gabriele Amorth.

That's the right name and yes there is a recruitment drive to get more Exocrists inside the RCC these days also I'm to understand Parish Priest are under orders to mention it more often than they have in the past and emphasize the real presence of demons as well as a stronger emphasis on Spirtual Warfare for the laity.

This is due to the raise of "Satanism" Read as: Pagan religions that include the occult in there practice especally Wicca, Druidry and Asatru.
