Conservatives are more tolerant than Liberals???? WTF???

Ok I just had something odd happen to me while riding in the car with my family. When my family were discussing something my father said, "Conservatives are more tolerant than Liberals because they say things like, "Oh You can't think that way or you're a bigot." The Liberals want tolerance for everything but ideas. Conservatives back their ideas up with facts while liberals just use emotion." I stayed quiet through out the whole thing but in my mind I'm thinking, "Conservatives more tolarent than liberals? WTF? "

My Bullshit dector just went off like crazy in my head when my father said that and I want to know where this silly idea came from and that my assumption of it being bullshit is correct.

He is saying that telling someone that their beliefs are wrong or hurtful is intolerant. For example, telling someone they are racist and that is bad would be considered intolerant. Yes, it is insane.

Conservatives have long argued that "intolerance" of a bad idea is the same thing as "intolerance" of a human being. It's not the same thing, and no amount of conservative repetition will make it the same thing.

When conservatives are intolerant toward gays, they pass laws discriminating against them. When conservatives are intolerant toward minorities, they systematically discriminate against them in any way they can; if slavery is outlawed, they use Jim Crow; if Jim Crow is outlawed, they discriminate against them in practice (look at the huge disparity in sentencing between whites and blacks for drug offenses, or the fact that no atheist will be elected president of the United States in the foreseeable future). When conservatives are intolerant toward liberals, they put them on "no fly" lists. They create sneaky ways to discriminate against homosexuals, by declaring certain behaviours or speech or literature to "offend community standards" so they can outlaw them as "obscene".

When liberals are "intolerant" toward conservatives, they tell them they are behaving badly.

Also, when conservatives say "tolerant", they mean "accept our status quo". Since by definition they and their way of life are correct, anything which hinders or adversely affects that is "intolerant" and "discriminatory".
