It's been widely reported in America and Canada, but these are countries where people feel more free to come forward with their allegations. In South America where the church runs the society, it would be extremely difficult to come forward.

In any case, when the Americans proposed a "zero tolerance" rule on pedophile priests, the Vatican disagreed. That's the most damning thing about the child sex-abuse scandal; why on Earth would they disagree that there should be a zero-tolerance rule on child sex abuse in the priesthood?
I was hoping for something more substantial, but thanks.

My head is going to explode.
In the last 48 hours, on all the tv channels the only subject has been at first the dying pope, and then the dead pope.
I wish the pope had stayed in Avignon.

I have stopped watching any news channels. Somebody please let me know when they go back to normal.

Too bad that didn't happen today. Maybe it would break up some of the Papal monotony of the news.

Agreed, for once in the last 48 hours :P

I'm so tired of the media coverage. As I wrote in an other thread, catholics constitutes about 1.5 % of the population here in Sweden, and still everything is centered around the news of the Pope's death. The same obituaries, the same footage etc. over and over and over again. There are far more interesting news that's happening today. The Iraqi parliament has elected a speaker, there's been a militant attack on the Abu Ghraib prison etc, news that has been shoved to the background (and a bunch of domestic news).

Agreed, I'm a fairly big news hound and I've stopped watching the news too. The tail end of Terry's saga did it in for me, so when the pope kicked it, I knew it was just going to get worse.

So You'll just have to do it standing up. Furthermore, due to obvious differences in plumbing, a man cant lie with a man as he lieth with a woman, so unless you find a man with a vagina, you're all set!

So I guess it's just Mike that has to be worried about this sort of thing, should he ever decide to lieth with a man...

I'm rather glad that the news' constant coverage of "Yup, still alive...yup, still alive....yup, still alive...yup, still alive.." is finally over. I know they've moved on to mourning with letters, videos, etc, but it's better (if just slightly) than standing out the man's window at 3:30am, then 3:35am, then 3:40am, ad nauseam, to report somewhat disappointedly that he's still holdin' on. Tasteless.

Can't say I have strong feelings one way or another about his passing or who will be the next one (except for the stupid customers who kept coming into the coffeeshop yesterday to tell me that the cardinal from Baltimore is a shoe-in for the next Pope--give me a break!!); however, I did come across this link, on what Fred Phelps has to say about him. Not a big fan of the Pope is ol' Freddie, hmm? +http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/apr2 ... 1_pope.pdf

Edit: Link broken just in case.

I've asked earlier in the thread. But never recieved an answer. Can anyone prove what the Pope did to help end the reign of the USSR?

I think it was something along the lines of the Pope basically calling on the people of Poland to join some group that was for the liberation of Poland or something like that.

And on a completely different tangent.

Come on, you know it's funny.

I can see something good coming of this already. Assuming the burial time is as was reported, it may just happen to coincide with the planned wedding date of a certain Royal couple in the UK, namely Charles and Camilla.

The wedding plan has already been one screw-up after another, the nail in the coffin would be the world press paying to see a dead guy go through a ceremony and the important religious icons in England taking that as a priority over a mere wedding.

It could just mean that should his mother ever shuffle off this mortal coil, Charles will be carrying a mighty grudge against the Vatican, and go all Henry on them....

On the plus side, it's totally kicked Terri Schiavo-related news to the curb. I'm sure they would have continued with the reporting on her autopsy and on all kinds of shit for days, had the pope survived.

In other news. The Pope. Still dead.

One can only hope that it won't come to:

Survivor: Vatican City

15 heads and leaders of the Catholic Church will compete for the coveted title of Pope. Every day the College of Cardinals will vote a contestant off.

1st event: Cunning Linguistics - Our competitors, who have each assured the faithful that they are celibate and chaste will give a 30 minute speech dictating how people have sex. Points awarded for generalisation, blandness, emotional appeals and refusal to budge an inch on the use of the penis.

Since it is inappropriate to use the POPE IS DEAD (moment of silence) thread to actually say anything negative about the Pope, I'm creating this thread for those who either:

* Think he was an asshole.
* Think he wasn't that bad, but are pissed off about the way he's endlessly and effusively worshipped by his lemming followers.
* Think he was a shitty leader, as demonstrated by the rudderless course it took through the pedophile priest scandals, its failure to take a moral lead on the spread of AIDS/HIV in Africa rather than clinging to dogma, and his swing toward conservatism on other issues such as Protestantism and women in the church.
* Are just plain sick of the fucking media coverage.

Goddamn, if I hear another person on the radio blubbering about how the Pope touched his or her life, I'm going to throw up
Hmmm.

* I think he did his best to meet the job requirements, but I don't think he was a natural.

* Well, he wasn't that bad a Pope, and better the crazy lemmings follow him than someone who could misuse them or be driven batty by them.

* A. Its the Pope's job to cling to dogma, spin it, and sell it, not make things up. One thing I do respect the Pope for is that he didn't pretend Christianity and Catholicism were things they were not.
B. Sexual assaults are at best property crimes in the Bible. It may not be PC today, but no prophet said Thou shall not rape, or Thou shalt treat women as human beings first. This oversight might be being worked on even as we speak.
C. The Pope has limited means of taking a moral lead in Africa. I mean, the the wrath of god is directed at complex issues like that. What's he going to say, apart from a fancy diplomatic "Told you so!"
D. Wouldn't know. I don't bother with TV or radio much anymore. Sounds like the thought spinners are groping for a safe news story to hype up; Iraq, Schavio, and a lot of other issues are such hot buttons they probably need this filler. People were starting to think and act up a little to much and need to be put in their place.
