I like how Charlie looks really grumpy and irritated. Everybody else gladly posed for their shots and he's mad that he both still can't get a nap and has to rear up to boot.

Nice pics. Would be interested to see how you'd render Samuel Vimes - or His Grace Sir Samuel Vimes, Duke of Ankh and Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch if you prefer - given the artists seem to be divided on a "Clint Eastwood" likeness and a "Pete Posthlewaite" likeness.

I like how you worked Michael Ende into the Yoko portrait, Publius. Excellent reference.

I really like them.

Are you working of a medieval portrait of them or why does Hector's shield feature a halberd? Same goes for Charlemagne's shield, what was the inspiration for that? I was not expecting it to feature the Imperial eagle and the France ancienne. Same goes for the insigna and the crown.

So my guess is that you are working from a medieval depiction, but which one?

The depiction isn't drawn from a medieval portrayal directly, but rather working from a generalized version of the original medieval conception (they generally showed all nine worthies in contemporary dress). Although the idea is to use more or less period correct dress and gear, some additional touches have been made, like Cæsar's sceptrum eberneum as a marshal's baton or David's turban including a jeweled crown. Joshua's mantle is the same cloak worn by Charleton Heston in The Ten Commandments.

The traditional arms associated with the Nine Worthies vary somewhat; Hector's attributed arms include Or a lion gules armed and tongued argent sejant on a throne proper maintaining a halberd argent shafted azure. The red stars on the armor are Achilles's livery, as Hector is wearing the armor he looted from Patroclus.

Charlemagne's shield is much more straightforward: He was both Roman emperor and Frankish king, so his arms display both per pale (significantly, both the emperors and the French kings pointedly claimed Charlemagne among their number, with the crown of Charlemagne as the Reichskrone and Joyeuse as the French coronation sword). His regalia are designed to show the dual heritage, fudging the details in favor of the mythology. This is the same reason Julius Cæsar features the imperial eagle on his breastplate and brooch (as the notional forerunner to both the Roman Empire in the East and the Holy Roman Empire, both of which featured bicapitated eagles).

On the whole, Arthur is the biggest disappointment of the bunch; he was drawn as a Romano-British warlord, which may be more accurate but is much less satisfactory than this version (not least for its much more impressive Excalibur):

Where is that quotation from? It sounds familiar.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation. I am not too huge a fan of the fusing of the heraldric insignia, but it works for what you want them to depict and the colouring/style is superb.

Hector's blazon is quoted from Heraldica's page on attributed arms.

An updated version of the original characters group shot, with two more characters:

Image

1. Maréchal de l'Empire Hilaire Frédéric François de Groote, Duc d'Avignon, "The Old Goat"
2. Oberstleutnant Carlos Javier de Cisneros y Austria, Conde de Oro, Graf von Lockstein, "The White Plague," of the Geheime Regiment "Kaiser Franz" Nr. 0
3. Der Reichsgraf, Field-Captain and Colonel-Proprietor-General of the Independent Corps of Manœuvre, "The Old Man of the Mountains"
4. Giacomo in Vincoli MMTO-R, Ritter von Ketten, Catholicos of Seleucia-Ctesiphon in partibus infidelibus, Visitor Apostolic of the Holy See, "The Sunday Visitor"
5. Capitaine de vaisseau le Comte Joseph Marie Simon-Pierre Étienne Tarcisius de Strangefils de la Côte-Silente, "The Great White Shark"
6. Général de division Yves-François de Gévaudan, Auditor-General of the Republic of Wisborg, "Old Whiskers"
7. L'Ange de l'amour et la mort

De Groote is the archenemy of the Sunday Visitor (de Groote carries a walking stick instead of the marshal's baton because Vincoli stole his baton in the Peninsular War, which is why Vincoli holds a baton despite being a papal spy). The ruthless fanatic the Angel of Love and Death is an especial operative of the Committee of Public Safety and later of Fouché, and is a longtime enemy of the Great White Shark.

Georgios would most likely have been a member of the Ioviani instead of the Praetorian Guards, as these were no longer the guard troops during Diocletians time. If he was a tribun, this also means he was guard commander at that time. Also, the scutum was never adopted by the Praetorian Guard, and the reliefs we have from commanders of the guard portray them and the Guard with oval shields (one example).

Other than that, I like them. Your 17th and 18th century drawings are my personal favorites.

Catching up on the drawings. I like the shading on some of the colored ones, like the red on Zoidberg up there and some of the jackets. Also like the sparkly dress color transition.
