My favorite little triangle of death is back in his thoughts :-)

The original plan was to have the 'chin beard' as TIE hangar, fractalsponge1 might make them a modular box system to quickly adapt the ship for other roles.

I'd say the holes in the bow are too small (and the space too restricted due to the two centerline turrets) for the torpedos fractalsponge prefers as ordnance :-).

Maybe it's just an OCD thing but I think it looks kind of odd having only 2 front ventral light turrets and not ones directly beneath those two flanking ones at the rear, surely there is enough reactor power to support an extra pair.

Hm, I'll look at that... Point was to have most guns be able to fire dorsal, and have the bow ventral pair cover the bottom. Maybe it'll look better with two at the vertex (might re-do the mounting attachment also).

Sort of done the bridge (back is unfinished, will likely do that will the engines/stern):

Quite the assorted sensor fit there-which are actually sensors and which are the communications antennae? The big dish especially looks interesting, and certainly out sized.

For a moment I mistook that dish as a shield generator.

It IS a shield generator, and totally vulnerable to fighter attack.

I'm envisioning the big dish as a long range sensor rectenna, and the smaller dishes being short range and specialized sensors. The turret-ed 2-dish sensor is from the customs corvette. On a big ship you'd never get close enough to see these. Either that, or they're covered or embedded into the structure with many emitter/receiver nodes. On a small ship, you don't have the luxury of space, so it's more external dishes like this. At least that's my hand-waving about it :)

More to the point, I thought it'd look better with a bunch of external antennae. Doing scaled-down sensor globes seemed like it would give off the wrong impression of scale. I did that with the Procursator and the false sense of size still bugs me, since I've trained myself to gauge ship sizes using the sensor globes...

I like it, it looks very 'outer rim'. These babies don´t have time to prance around in core fleet review parades all shined up and smooth, there are pirates and secessionists about!

Hey fractal, would you consider doing a completely faithful reproduction of Devastator from ANH? I think it's a really overlooked model that's constantly ignored in favor of the Avenger (perhaps because of lesser detail).

Ugh, what a crazy couple of weeks at work...

Anyway, back to some semblance of normality now.

Devastator would be interesting. I can probably do a greeble-accurate version in not too much time. It's got a lot of interesting elements, but I'd have to embellish heavily to get it to fit in the same detail range as the other big ships I've done. Might be a good platform to do ISD variants like the Tector or Dominator. I don't know when I'll get around to it though.

Well you could probably get away with the embellishments pretty easily, for example in the trench it could be quite similar to the ISD2 as long as it has those sweet, sweet quad laser cannons.

I stumbled across this thread yesterday while looking for images of a Rebel Assault Frigate. I gradually made my way through forty-six pages of Fractal's renders.

Where's the smiley with jaw-dropping action?

I registered just to post a reply and say:

GOOD SHOW!

LOVE the fleet tender. The Ridonkulous-Class Star Destroyers are amazing, of course. Goes without saying, really. And I really am a fan of the underappreciated small support ships, such as that little number on page 40...

Based, it seems off the Marvel design from the Tech Commentaries...
ImageImage

I did my own version of that ship as a cross-section several years back, but I lacked high-quality 3D software. Perhaps you'll enjoy it anyway!

Image

Hope my version (nearly finished) will inspire you to finish your own!

Nice Cross Section there Satchel, Must have taken a while.

Has anyone ever Calculated how many Decks are on these beautiful monstrosities?

I count at least 47 decks on your Fulgor there Satchel.

after a quick run through of the Acclamator I counted 14 Decks, not including the tower or the massive vehicle bay/marshaling yard which takes up a good portion of the ship.

Venator is even harder to count Decks, since it shows only a fraction of them and the majority of the ship is made up of power systems and hangar space.

I don't think i'd even be able to count the decks on an ISD before they start to blur together, but I'd give it a rough and clumsy estimate of around 100 decks give or take.

I absolutely love your work, fractal. Sorry for bothering you with a request, but I'd be interested in your take on the Modular Taskforce Cruiser. In particular, it would be interesting to see how you deal with some of its various modules (hospital, inquisition, observation, rescue, survey, and ect.)

Hm, very impressive cross-section - a bit shorter than I had envisioned, but very cool.

Taskforce Cruiser/Hauler - that's an odd one. The modularity probably wouldn't be much, from what I can see - it's still going to be a large box, with more or less windows and docking bays probably. Star Galleon is also an interesting concept; I like weird and overlooked auxiliaries.

Decks - I have no idea. A lot depends on the location of things like the reactor chamber and engineering spaces.

Anyway, things going very slowly at the moment; just re-blocked out anonymous star cruiser #1 to conform more with the available references: (http://www.theforce.net/swtc/Pix/comics/de/cruiser1.jpg, http://www.theforce.net/swtc/Pix/comics ... iser1b.jpg)

I was wondering, have you ever thought of doing a cross section Fractal? Everything you touch seems to become incredibly awesome, why not make something already awesome awesomer? Or would it require a different kind of software in order to draw it? Whatever, you just keep truckin' man, we're lucky to have you!

I don't think the superstructure is a very good match, to blocky and rises too fast. It needs to be more gradual with less narrowness, at least in my mind. The first change I would make is extending the thickened dorsal plate so that it reaches around the superstructure, while also broadening the base of the superstructure.

Of course I am of the opinion that the second Image is not actually related to the first. The first is a ship with a very deep ventral section, and the second is far flat-er. The second is also far blockier than the first with it's superstructure. I like the first image better than the second anyway.

As it is I think that your superstructure is too tall, just, to be similar to reference #1. But hey, it's all my opinion.

Ok, so here's a slightly modified version to better match the references.

Image

The bridge module is definitely partially subsumed by the block structure, and the ziggurat-style slope in front of the module is pretty clear. The variable slope of the dorsal hull I've chosen to interpret as a central spine/battery, which appears to be no wider than the block in front of the bridge module, setting a limit on how wide it can be. The angles about match up as I have it now; keep in mind the final version will have greeble and turrets to obscure the outline a bit. I think it's pretty clear there's only one layer of ISD-style terrace dorsally, and most of the superstructure rises in sloping blocks from the hull (1-2 courses of it). The hangar bay possibly extends almost to the bow, but that can be refined later (possibly using superstructure and greeble at the ventral bow).

Some obvious blobs that are probably major-caliber weapon mounts (twin main guns from the Bellator, perhaps). Smaller Venator/ISDI style guns in the trenches and superstructure to round that out. Overall throw-weight similar to an Allegiance, which doesn't have the gigantic hangar bay and is largely a single-purpose ship killer.

Another oddball auxiliary you might be interested in is the Escort Carrier from TIE Fighter. Despite being used later on in the X-Wing series as yet another TIE spawn point, the original TIE Fighter campaigns treated the Escort Carrier as a glorified freighter that mainly restocked fighters for depleted task forces and ferried prototype fighter designs to various locations.

I know alot of things are asked of you, but I just finished re-reading Hull 721, and I really want to see the Black Prince, particularly after Mirannon mounts those massive guns in place of a destroyed turret. Oh, and keep up the good work.

Always wanted to see your take on the ship.

here is my early impression of it from a bunch of years ago

http://warlords.swrebellion.com/wp/?pag ... itemId=102
http://warlords.swrebellion.com/wp/?pag ... _itemId=96
http://warlords.swrebellion.com/wp/?pag ... _itemId=99

however I've always wanted to revisit it because it didn't turn out all that well. I don't necessarily think it should have the massive hanger as I saw it as a more heavily armored ship. I may just redo it as a low poly version of yours, depending on how it turns out. Though I am interested in why you chose to put in the central engine tail.
