Well, I wanted to see how and what could be done to raise a 12 gun 18"/45 ship with suitably reasonable armoring with no bulges and reasonably modern arrangements and TDS. So here's the result.

21knots cruise?! Oh wait, you have no torpedo bulkheads, and your main belt is a lot shorter than the one on my Sparta I/II class.

^a legitimate choice considering that a lot of people have either slower battleships relegated to convoy escort duties, some of which got 14" guns, or considering some people employ semi-battlecruisers in that role as well. The cruiser need to be able to escape if it is chanced upon in fog or something. This is also the reason for the high cruise speed - first, it is a better commerce raider with it and second, it is far easier to go from 21 knots to 32 knots instead from 15 to 31 knots.

Also, the face armor should be impenetrable to cruiser-type ammunitions.

The heavy face armour doesn't help you if the cruiser/convoy escort shell penetrates your belt or deck armour and ends up in the magazine anyway. I'd expect hits to the hull are more common than turret face hits (guesstimate; no actual data- does someone have any ?)
The argument for the high cruising speed sounds convincing. Maybe thats something the Tuscan designers will incorporate in one of the future designs...

Depends. The german battlecruisers at Jutland were struck six times in the turrets, iirc (though only 3 times in the front, iirc). So turret hits are a possibility. The point is though, that there is nothing from keeping the shell from penetrating the belt/deck armor anyway except for a ridiculously heavy belt/deck armor (note that it already has 4" deck armor which is more than most british BB/BCs ever had).

However, adding additional face armor is relatively cheap and only costs a couple hundred tonnes each, so if you can prove that part of the turrets and allow them to respond with their own fire (even if they do not manage damaging hits, splinters alone and shell splashes might reduce the enemies effectiveness). So you get a pretty good bonus to the survival for the cost of...0.2 strength.

I''m assuming that is meant to be using the 7.92x57mm IS cartridge which means the gun likely as not would resemble a descendant of the MG08/18...which has a barrel length of 720 mm...or about 91 calibers. As a point of comparison the M2 Browning is also a 90 caliber (.5" cartridge, 45" barrel) and I've used that for my ships.

Yeah, it is supposed to be the MG08. Thanks.

I contemplated using the MG 30 instead, but those new MGs would just enter service now and therefore go towards elite units first. The main drawback of the MG08 (the weight) hardly matters that much on a ship anyway as it is mounted and not supposed to be schlepped around.

You have 10 depth charge racks and 8 throwers but only 2 charges per rack?

You probably can't fit more than 2 stern rails...but you should have a lot more reloads, you have (it appears) only about 36 total charges, which isn't enough for more than one pass and somewhere between 3 and 5 are really needed for a solid kill.

Um...no? Well ok, that's what it says but it's certainly not the intent. I just have no idea how the thing works. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

BTW, those deck and hoist mounts for guns...those are turrets, right?

You mean like this?? No. They're open mounts but they have their own hoist mechanism coming up from a secondary magazine which can be armored.

Um... I thought they can be either open or closed mounts. The secondary armament on a Iowa certainly doesn't have a barbette, and they are closed in and armored. The hoist part means that each gunhouse gets it's own hoist from the magazine. The gunhouses aren't mounted on barbettes, however, which means that the gunhouses can't be as heavy, and that the armored section leading up from the magazine to the barbette is almost certainly not going to be strong enough to support the gunhouse.

So how do you do turrets for a DD? Do you have to select the turret w/barbette mount and just stick like half an inch of armor on it or something? :?

Um...no? Well ok, that's what it says but it's certainly not the intent. I just have no idea how the thing works. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

BTW, those deck and hoist mounts for guns...those are turrets, right?
What I went with on my 1926/7 series Cruisers, Destroyers, and Frigates has 2 charges with 50 (or 40/30 depending) reloads in stern rails and 2 charges with 40 (or 30/ 20) reloads in depth charge throwers. That gives you two stern rails and (probably) 2 Y- of K- throwers...of course if this were the Californian Navy they would have no rails just K- and Y- to launch their charges :D

Anyway here is what it looks like on my San Juan class:
Main DC/AS Mortars
  • 2 - 450.00 lbs / 204.12 kg Depth Charges + 50 reloads - 10.446 t total
    • in Stern depth charge racks
2nd DC/AS Mortars
  • 2 - 450.00 lbs / 204.12 kg Depth Charges + 20 reloads - 4.420 t total
    • in Depth charge throwers

    On the larger question of ASW effectiveness I've been using NavWeaps as my primary resource and the link sends you to a decent 5 or so paragraph primer on the subject before getting in to the US ASW arsenal.
